182 or trophy

  LY V6 with Recaros

ive already ordered my 182 but keep hearing on here about how amazing the trophy is, as im not driving it aroung tracks would i actually notice much difference in the speed between the two cars or would it mostly be in the handling?

  Clio 197

The feedback Ive had is that the Trophy has a stiffer ride... Im not too sure if its true.

Plus you lose the toys anyway...

(PS I drive a full-fat 182).

  LY V6 with Recaros

i have looked, but people mainly just mention about the handling and not the difference in speed!

full fat, dont bother with the trophy, or get a cup with recaros if youre not going round a track. just as nice in my opinion, plus you get more toys.

  LY V6 with Recaros

Thats what i think 2 but i keep hearing people say on here that if your looking to get a new 182 now it should be the Trophy! Havent driven it, but personally i would rather have the extra toys in it instead, my vtr at the mo has nothing in it, so will be nice to have a few luxuries!!

So what do you get thats worthwhile in a full fat 182 then?

Ive not seen much to swing it against the Trophy.

The Trophy has Cruise control, ESP, Aircon in fact the only thing it doesnt have over the common 182 are Xenons, Climate fancy crap french electronic wizardry oh and the interior (like thats important ;))

At the end of the day you should only buy the trophy if you intend to drive it properly. If its just to nip to Asda then common 182 it is!

  LY V6 with Recaros

I think over the Trophy it has xenons, climate control, heat reflective windscreen, abs/ebd, lateral airbags, automatic wipers, cant remember everything, but comparing that to my saxo it has everything!! Only thing thats got is electric windows in a dodgy place!! Do love it tho, will be sad to see it go!

  Renault Laguna Coupe

If you want all the toys, get a 182 with whatever options you want. But if you want the best drive currently available from a front-wheel-drive car, get a Trophy.

If you dont do trackdays the Trophy probably isnt worth it, but if you do, then get one.

  Clio 197

Before the trophy came-out, the 182 was still "best hot hatch".

The trophy may be better as far as the motoring press in concerned, but unless you know how to use it on a track - its not worth it.

Weve had an airfield event recently, where I have put-in better sprint times in my Cupped 182, than a Trophy.

That might have been different if the chap had his Trophy long enough to get used to it.

As far as renault is concerned, the trophy is one second quicker than the 182 on their own track (which they know extremely well) (and driven by some vert experienced drivers).

Whats a second in real life?

The second doesnt matter... but how the car feels during that second does.

The 182 is certainly good enough for me, and it seems like a good bet for you IMO.

I think Niks Trophy wasnt used to its full potential at the airfield to be honest with you Omar.

He only had 1700 miles on it at the time

Once its all run in nicely, i think it would be different

Taking nothing away from you though, as your times were superb :)

^^

Oh yes... absolutely...

Itll be ages before everthing is bedded-in nicely.

But that said, one second on Renaults test track, may equate to even less on our tiny little airfield track.

I sat in a trophy in the show room but at the end of the day you dont get anything with it apart from seats and a stearing wheel.

You can get some seriously cheap nearly new 182s now - save yourself 5 grand.

Id go for the full fat 182 in your case. If your not going to drive it on the track then you might as well save a few quid and get a few extra toys.

Omar, I dont think it matters whether my car is run in or not, youre just a nutter when you get behind the wheel :p

I wouldnt bother with the trophy, wasnt impressed with it at all. I found the seats worse than the standard ones at holding me in, suspension is ok but handled no better than my lowered 172 IMO. Plus you loose the xenons and climate and have to drive around in a pink car (not too much of a problem for the girls).

Just think 30k down the road when one of those nice expensive struts goes tits up, I wouldnt want that repair bill!

Would a Trophy depreciate slower because of its relative rarity and limited edition status? Something to think about.

Even so, for me it does make all the difference having a few toys in every day driving. Also, a lot more non-car-nut people will be impressed by half-leather/alcantara, climate control, auto xenons, nice rear seats, better stereo etc, than they will be by some geeky damper stats and a sticker. I know that kind of thing shouldnt really matter, but it does.

anyone else think its really cheap of renault to take the leather seats out the back of a full fat 182 when you order the recaros ???

Indeed. I may have got the cup if that was the case with the back seats, saying that I love my full fat 182 & more than happy with it!

i think that some people on here are more just trying to convince themselves that the trophy is not worth the extra cash (if any extra at all in reality) because they are not in a position to buy one. having owned a 172 cup i know it tramlined to buggery so the trophy will be a breath of fresh air. I do get the impression also that some are trying to put others off buying them so there will be some left that may get sold at a discount. Some of the reasons for avoiding the Trophy are almost laughable, what most people are effectively saying in reality is "save yourself 500-1000 pounds and forget the recaros, exclusivity, better spoiler, weight saving, better light weight alloys, the best ever handling e.t.c stick to the cup suspension if your not going on track WTF so what if your going on track or not that suspension will make your everyday drive so much easier and dare i say it safer if you like to boot it now and again! rant over

  VaVa

No. Its horses for courses. For some people, being able to open your boot fully is more important than having a bigger spoiler. lol. You cant get narked because people have given THEIR reasons for not getting one,

You may have bought it because of the stiff suspension and the colour. Those are the two main reasons why I wouldnt buy one.

  LY V6 with Recaros

At the end of the day i think its all down to personal preference and what you want from the car, if its not going to be going round the track or thrown about on the roads then the 182 is still going to be more than good enough, and its still a great little car to drive whether its a 182/cup or Trophy, its all down to individual opinions and how its going to be driven. I dont think anyone is trying to put people off buying them, i had the choice between the Trophy and f/f 182 and i chose the f/f 182 because I want a car thats going to be comfortable just driving around town too!

You wont be disappointed with either cars.

By the sounds of what YOU want from the car you have made the right choice.

I still sometimes whish I had something a little more comfy when Im feeling rough. But Im more than happy with the change I made.

if everyone liked the trophy then they would all be sold by now, different people have different tastes and priorities, thats why there are so many different types of vehicles out there, it would be boring if we all bought the same.

if or when i come back from oz im going for either a trophy (2nd hand) lotus elise (2nd hand) or vx220 (2nd hand).i had ia new full fat 182 and loved it but fancy something new next time.just get what you want whatever you pick you will allways be thinking what if i got that one

  Silver 182 F/F

Why on Trophys and Cups do they not colour code the blanks for the headlamp washers it looks so cheap.

  Clio Cup

I actually agree with toonboy to some extent. You have got to be stark raving mad to not buy a trophy when your in the market for a 182.

The trophy was set up for english roads is this correct? Then why not buy it over a cup if its a better road car. If its not going to be used on track why is this a problem when it was set up for uk roads.

most people usualy do Richy im a God

The car was designed for UK roads and is no stiffer than a normal 182 by all accounts due to the great dampers.

The 172 Cup tramlines like a sl*g but i began to understand the 172 cup on a recent trip to france(in a megane deisel). their motorways are so smooth and empty and the 172 cup would be absolutely perfect on their roads which it was obviously designed for. I hope to see the same logic in the Trophy!

the trophy is awesome and the suspension set up is better by all accounts. But I wouldnt swap my full fat with all the toys for one.

Call me a tw*t if you like but whether its better than a full fat 182 or a cup due to its superior (or not - delete as applicable) handling is irrelevant to me. When i walked into the dealers and saw it and immediately thought now that looks the b****cks im having that one and that was that job done. Hell my previous car was a 1.2 Grande ffs the trophy feels like a jet fighter to me and im sure the more i drive it the more ill get out of it. As to whether its any better to live with than the full fat or cup day in day out i have no idea, ive honestly never driven the other two. What i do know though is that more than once now ive gone into a bend thinking oh dear (or something similar) i might be going a bit fast for this bend, only to exit the other side thinking t**ser you could have got round there much quicker. Im not a good enough driver to say with any authority how good or not the trophy is, but i already know that when the 3 years is up on the selections deal ill handing over a cheque - i just wont be able to part with it and thats a big claim only having had it for just over 3 weeks.

So was all that Mimimum Guaranteed Future Value stuff a big lie then?, i thought that salesman looked a shifty git. lol.

At the end of the day, the 182s, Trophy and to that matter 172 and Cup represent the pinnacle of front wheel drive hot hatch fun which Renault has perfected over the past 5 years. You wont be disappointed with any one of these cars - fast, fun, highly chuckable and reasonably cheap to maintain to boot!

Anyway the Trophy, as the final offering for the current shape, represents Renaults the result of knowledge and expertise gained over the past few years. Yes it is bound to handle better as it has race specced suspension BUT at the end of the day the car it is based upon, (the humble 182) is a pretty damn good place to start and to be honest you cant go far wrong. Ive had my 182 Cup susp. since May of last year (16 months - now!) and Im not bored - embarrasses many a more expensive machine and its great fun!

You pays ya money you take your choice!

  Clio 182

u wont be dissapointed in whatever u choose. Ive got respect for all versions 172/182 cup trophy whatever. were all part of the same club they are all great cheap pocket rockets as long as the owner is happy with what theyve purchased then great. if your not 100% with the trophys colour then dont get it you might wish you got the FF 182 if you like the extra bits. if you want a track sl*g but cant quite afford the trophy get the cup.

Long story short get what suits your needs or what appeals more 2 u. Just do plenty of research on what u really want dont jump in to early

If I was buying a 182 now rather than 6 months ago when I payed my deposit I would really be in a postition of not knowing what car to buy. I really dont know if I could exactly choose! Glad in one way I didnt have to as I would have probably brought something totally different to stop me having to decide.

I think some off the comments on this thread about people convincing themselves against the trophy biggest they cant afford it is a strange view.

If I was 100% the trophy was for me I would have traded my cup packed 182 in for one, but as people have said on this thread its really down to personal preference. I would loved to have had a proper limited edition 182 and the pinnacle off the 172/182 evolution, but on the other hand I already have the car I really wanted.

The main appeal off the trophy to me was the suspension which looks to be really trick and ideal for someone that does not want to modify ther car and fit coilovers etc. When I saw the car at Goodwood, my mind was instantly decided that as I really disliked the colour (no offence trophy guys) and as petty as that sounds it was enough to put me off the car straight away. As much as I realise what the trophy stands for, it did put me off. If I was an out and out track day guy I am sure such things would not bother me.

I also like all the creature comforts and extras off my Cup Packed car and thats why I brought it rather than the Cup at the time.

The Trophy is ideal for the track dayers that can really exploit it, I am not sure I could get the best or any more out off it on the road then I do in mine.

So as much as I wanted the Recaros and suspension, I hope to get the recaros for mine and then have the nice rear seats for me.

The overall spec and colour off the car for me showed me the Trophy wasnt for me. But whatever 182 you go for as long as your get a good deal you cant go wrong. Just make sure you go with the car you want, as much as the Trophy is really nice its not quite right for me, but if anyone can send me the Sachs set up for mine Ill take it!

Get the car for you - no one likes the same thing. Each varient will suit different people better.

  Clio 197

Ok... lets put this into perspective:

Some on here will buy a 172/182... remove all seats (front and rear)... then put bucket seats in the front..... Then come the coilovers, and possibly other mods.

A trophy has had most of that work done to it in the first place, and therefore its a dream car for those who want buckets, expensive suspension and exclusivity.

The seats it comes with are seriously tasty.... and its clear that the suspension setup it comes with is better than the "cup" pack.

But... if you dont want buckets, fancy dampers... and DO want the toys... then the choice is clear!!

So... the Trophy is great, because now theres something for everyone.
