182 over heating

So got the car running today finally and now i have another problem, after about 10 minutes of driving the stop light come on and it was then i noticed the temperature and the car was over heating, i pulled over to let it cool down, checked i had coolant, which i did, after 5 mins it had cooled down to normal temperature, i put the heater on full (which was blowing warm air as it should) This seemed to pull enough heat away from the engine to keep it at normal temperature to drive home.

So with the heater being on and blowing hot air as it should it leads me to believe that the water pump must be working!? But the radiator is stone cold, the top coolant hose for the rad is warm right by the thermostat but as it gets closers to the rad cools down to cold.

I'm going to try bleeding the system again tomorrow, but doubt that is the problem.

I'm thinking probably thermostat, maybe water pump?

Anyone else had this problem?

The stat could be stuck shut maybe, the heat in the hose could just be transfer from the engine instead of warm coolant. Try whipping the stat out an boiling it up in some water to see if it opens failing that the impeller could be not spinning on the water pump. As you said though try an see if there is an air lock but I myself find these pretty easy to bleed up.

Surely if the water pump wasn't working, i wouldn't be getting hot air blown out of my heater as surely it wouldn't get pumped into the heater matrix?

I wouldn't of thought so as it wouldn't really be circulating. I'd whip stat out its only 2 bolts an 5mins an try that first.

Sounds like stuck closed stat to me.

Changed mine today, mine was stuck open, so engine not getting upto temp, stat cost £23 from k-tec delivered within 1 day.

My engine was not getting up to temp coolant max temp on 1hr drive was 72°C. I still had heat from the heaters, coolant now in 92°C-86°C range after changing stat.

3 X 10mm bolts on the housing, take old one out, new one in, reassemble, refill coolant (renault type d), bleed system. Done.

Run it without the thermostat and that'll tell you?

Was there pressure in the resouviour when you opened it?

Lewis, bleed it first, as it could be that.

Other than that I would say its the t'stat.

Mate, get a Renault one.

As Tony says get a Renault one, I've brought qh ones in the past that haven't opened from new!

Renault stat is £16 + vat

It was the thermostat Took it out put it in boiling water nothing happened, fired it up without a stat in, coolant circulated fine and temp stayed low. Now about to order a new one.
