182 slow puncture

  Ford Fiesta

My tyre is going dwon from 30 psi to 26psi over 7 days. Had a look round it and its got a screw in the tread close to the inner edge, rear tyre passenger side.

Been told that if its this close to sidewall it cannot be repaired.

Anyone else had a slow puncture, and what did you do about it?

(whilst I am on this subject anyone know the link to the thread about 182 cup suspension tyres where we discussed what were the correct one, (stiffer sidewalls etc, cant find it on the search)

thanks

Cheapest tyre I found was Mytyres @£78 per corner (including postage),with an orange/red line around them when delivered as per the previous thread to denote stiffer version.

one local tyre place has told me to just run with it in if it is loosing 4psi over 1 week. Much safer than repairing it as a repair near the edge could reult in a blow out if it becomes loose.

Anyone agree with this, Just keep it in until the front 2 need changing then get all 4 tyres changed at once? Or is this going to slow the car down, (me not having as much confidence and hence driving slower)?

when I get the tyre/tyres changedshould I request the tracking to be done too or is this not needed on tyre changes?

Just had a puncture last week - managed to use the mobile compressor I have in the boot to put enough air in to get to ATS - luckily it was repairable and cost me just £5!

Liam I dont know who told you this but the bit about just leaving the screw in and running it is "ABSOLUTE RUBBISH"

Change it and change it NOW.

Although they are rite about the screw being in/or close to the side wall it CANNOT be repaired.

The reason is this.........there is a layer of reinforced rubber goes all the way over the tyre...........it is this part that makes it tubeless......now on the side walls the reinforcing material only goes accross and its NOT metallic............whereas in the tread not only is the material mentioned above there but also the metallic fabric..........there are 2 layers of this which are at 90deg to each other................so there is plenty of strength and this is why a nail in the tread can safely be repaired.............this also why the tyre is called radial............here endeth the lesson;)

lol Mike.

Still waiting for tyres to arrive from mytyres, how long does it usually take?

Renault dealer wants £60 to fit two to the rear!!!!! thats my supplying the rubber!!!

Another local large tyre dealer wants £15 same job. I dont mind paying more if it means no damage to wheels, but the cheaper place said they wont damage them either. Heard stories on here of rims getting scraped, so want to avoid that!

I know its a bit pedantic but the valves they fit to the new tyres, take it they all look exactly same, as in they will look like the original front ones, not stick out any further etc?

(been on road for 5 years never had to get a tyre changed you see! )

No wonder some Renault dealers have such a bad name and dont fare well in JD Power etc surveys. The price quoted to fit two tyres with you supplying them is downright GREED. Just take them to your good independent garage who will soon balance and fit them for a fraction of £60 - that is daylight robbery!

  Black 172

that is daylight robbery my dad owns his own garage , they do not scuff alloys as the machine they use has a cover on it so it doesnt damage the rim, he only charges about £25 for fitting and balancing four tyres !!

Liam you dont need to get your car tracked just cos you have had the tyres changed they will just need balancing

could get it done at your dads place Vicky then? :)

BozM they are still £79.50, its the W rated ones that are £102, agreed higher spec but not the ones that are fitted to the 182. You need the V rated ones as per the picture above.

I was quoted £25 a tyre fitting from my local dealer, got them done elsewhere for £10 a tyre which was the cheapest in my area I could find.

They didnt scratch the alloys but did balance them wrong so did have to go back and get them re-balanced but there is no way I would give Renault the honour of paying £25 a tyre, that is daylight robbery!

another renault dealer has quoted £30 for both rear tyres changing and balancing.

hope they balance them right!

yeah, it was pretty obvious when they hadnt, over 60mph the steering wheel was shaking, they had got the weights totally wrong. was sorted though and now is fine.

I dont mind mistakes like that, the only thing I was cr*pping myself about was them scratching the wheels, which they didnt.

tyres turned up today from mytyres.co.uk, great service. And they have the red dot to denote stiffer sidewalls.

Couple of questions, compared the two the only differences between these and ones that are on are couple of numbers different, on original ones they say FU 56 8RJ 1704 and under the exalto pilot logo says HBA 1015

new ones say FU 56 8RJ 2504 and under the exalto pilot logo says HBA 1012,

but take it these are just unique batch numbers etc?

also on one of the new ones on the inside is what appears to be some sticky, glue substance yellow in colour. A patch about 6 inch long, is this normal too?

That will just be where a sticker was on the tyre so that they know what tyre it is easily. Dont worry about that.

I see mytyres are now at £102.10!

geoff the are the w rated ones that are over £100, what we need are the v rated ones still £78 odd I think
