182 wont start !!

  BMW M3
Afternoon everyone,

Slept in for work today and thought i best make up the time on the journey, to find that the car just would not start. The ignition lights came on ok, and everything works but it just doesnt turn. No noise at all. Its like there just isnt a starter motor lol.

Eventually decided to bump start it and off i went. Tried it when i got to work and it was fine. Then, when leaving it was exactly the same as in the morning. And again happened earlier !!

Anyone any idea whats going on?

Its now parked in an impossible place to push start so i need a fix lol.

Thanks guys

Battery ?!... i thought that for a moment but its come a bit suddenly. Car has been 100% fine previous days. Maybe its draining away very quick and would explain why its starts after a journey.

And i thought faulty starter motors were as thing of the past in my 89 escort lol.

Bugger... and its been on a roll too, not going to renault for about 3 months.

Thanks guys

go to a renault specialist rather than renault, unless you have warrenty to worry about mate :) youll pay less, get someone whos probs more clued up on renaults than renault them self and will treat your car with respect

i would say starter if the dash lights come on fine if its the battery it normal dims the dash lights and turns over a bit.

Could it be the cabling in to the starter motor. I know that there is a thick live cable but is there also a small lead that makes the actuator move and thus engage the starter pin on to the fly wheel. Is this is not engaging then it may not send the power to the live feed to turn the motor over. Just a guess thou

check battery. Sounds relly simple I had that not long after I got my car. Checked the battery found that one of the connectors on the battery wasn't tight.

Look for the simple stuff first.

I had problems like this during my first 18 months of ownership...

Lights would come on, the solenoid behind the glove box would click, but no current got to the starter motor. Then it would be fine for a few weeks. Eventually it wouldn't start at all.

Some part of the wiring loom was loose...there's a bunch of cables right down at the back of the engine bay, and moving them about while the AA bloke held the key in the start position got it going again.

It took Renault 3 attempts to replace the right section of the loom to get it sorted and it's been fine ever since.

Sounds like you've exactly the same problem mate.

Thanks for all the input.

The reason in didnt think it was the batt was that within hours, it goes from 100% fine, to not even ticking over.

And with a faulty starter motor, i thought i would hear a clicking noise when its bust, but it is completely silent. The only noise is fuel pump on ignition etc...

I would love to go to a specialist, but there arent any near me and so might try for warrenty issue. Or maybe a tuning company up north.

I say 3 months, but i did go there to buy stuff a few times. It just feels like i spend so much time there. I usually do any maintanence on the other family cars, like take them for service and have never taken any of them to the garage more then my 182 and their a bit older.

Im going to wait till it doesnt start and try some jump leads to check. If its not that, then i presume is the starter motor (wiring), like Wozbit and mark suggest.

Thanks for all the help guys

Obviously your car is newish, therefore you would expect that the battery not to fail so soon. it sounds to me that you could possibly have an altenator problem, causing your battery not to hold it's charge. Not enough volts in the battery to turn your starter motor, but enough in the battery to power your lights etc.
Get your altenator and battery checked. Also check that you have a good earth. Process of elimination I'm afraid to find what's wrong.

Hope this helps and you find the cause soon. Good luck.

^^ Thanks mate,

Have got some jump leads in the car now for tomorrow to test the battery. If its not that then i presume its the starter, and so try get renault fix it under warrenty

Not sure about in a 182, but in my 172 i had a similar problem. that red light that flashes in the centre of your dash should flash on an doff at a constant rate. but if the car doesnt start and you notice the red light is flashing constantly at a fast rate, well then its an immobiliser problem. have you dropped your keys on the floor? that was the fault with me and the key needed re-programming.
So my car would start most days but the odd day it didint want to know at all.
Took renault 3 hrs in the garage to diagnose the problem (only charged me 35 quid). had to get new key at cost of £120ish Cant remember.

hope you sort it soon.
