whats the actually legality of these, as ive heard difference reports. i wouldnt mind getting some, but theres no way i could be arsed to change them for mot's and such.

The headlight units themselves have everything needed attached to them (I believe) so it's a simple swap so I have heard.

Apart from the fact that it has no headlamp washers or self levelling, which are required by law..;)

A statement by the department of transport.

"1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.
2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.
3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp. "

I found this info on another forum a while back as I was looking into doing it on my missus's Clio as she wanted "Pretty lights" like mine. lol.

when i had xeons on my not xeon equipted car passed the MOT no probs auto leveling etc only has to be fitted from the factory although on a lowered clio you may need to adjust the lights a little as mine pointed too high

That's a statement from the DOT.

As there are no UK regs, the European regs are adopted. This is the full letter of response from the Department Of transport

"The situation for Gas Discharge (HID High Intensity Discharge) (commonly known as Xenon) headlamps is complex.

I attach links to the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 which regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However you will be well aware that new vehicles have Xenon headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the Xenon headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the aftermarket, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "Xenon is banned in the aftermarket" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require Xenon in the aftermarket to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a Xenon headlamp sold in the aftermarket should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.
2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).
3, Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

But as long as you have them aligned correctly and keep them clean I can't see you ever getting into any bother over it.

Hi there,

I am thinking to put eibach sportslines on my 172 mk2. Do i need to manually adjust the headlight as the car will be slightly lower? Or will the auto levelling fix it?

Cheers,
Kenn.

lol, cheers for the comments guys 'n' gals ;) I am well impressed with the difference and cannot believe how much clearer everything is at night!
As for fitting (i watched) and everything is the same, it's basically plug and play just swap the adjusters from standard headlights to the xenon ones.

As for the legallities, as said before it will pass the MOT no problems (i checked before hand) The levellers and washers are law from factory...how do you think HID conversions manage to sell any kits? ;)

JustinRT, I will disclose the amount if you PM me mate :)

and Kris_M...well...erm sport...you mean a 172/182 thingy...? :S strange that seen as I've never attempted to claim my car is a 'sport'. It doesn't have sport badges nor a 172/182 bodykit. So your point being...

Just wondered why you would go to all the effort of putting xenons in when you can buy a nice 172 sport for 5k ish that’s all.

I do like the xenons in your car but in my opinion they look better suited to the sport.

Sorry if I pi**ed you or any other members off apologies to all

Hi there,

I am thinking to put eibach sportslines on my 172 mk2. Do we need to manually adjust the height of the headlights or will the autolevellers work?

^^^ u wont be able to see very far with them just need an allen key to lift them up a bit.

Looking good daz.

Kris M - my dynamique had factory fitted xenons, IMO headlights are not making the car look like a sport at all. so y did u make ur car look like a 182................................................................................................... ;)

oh and looking at the pics of your car, do u have brembo brakes?!!
