182FF Inferno Turbo

Thought it was about time I started a thread for my recently acquired 182 inferno with ED low boost turbo conversion. I had absolutely no intention of buying a 182 turbo and this one belonged to a good friend of mine. I took the car on while I was busy putting @MrBlonde Cup back on the road to use as a daily. I was just going to finish a few jobs off on the car and then advertise for sale. I have driven a couple of 172/182 turbos in the past, but this gave me the opportunity to use one daily and see how I got on with it.

Prior to the turbo build it was a low owner, low mileage original 182FF in inferno orange in excellent condition. The car had eibach sportlines, braided hoses front and rear and full Scorpion stainless steel exhaust system with decat.

It then had a full engine and gearbox rebuild. ARP rod bolts were fitted during the rebuild along with fitment of a PH1 cylinder head. It also had a megane keyed crank pulley. It was then fitted with a full ED low boost turbo kit. Added to the kit were ED paddle clutch, bigger injectors and boost controller.

Car was all put back together and then taken to ED with a base map and once there set up on the dyno. Will dig out the graph, but it made 255bhp.

It was like that until I picked it up a couple of months ago. This is when I first collected it.

Car drove really well, but needed a good clean and I wanted to change a few bits. Tyres were different front and rear, bit of an oil leak, colour coded trim pieces needed replacing, exhaust sat off center(drives me mad on 182), headlight restoration etc etc. Nothing too major, but plenty to keep me busy. Anyway I got started cleaning and wanted to identify the oil leak.

Bit more cleaning and I narrowed the oil leak down to the cambelt side of the car. One of the cam seals had failed and oil was leaking onto the cambelt. I can do most mechanical jobs, but don't touch cambelts on these. Spoke with my trusted Renaultsport specialist and top bloke @renotech. Car was dropped round to him for a full genuine cambelt kit, crank seal, cam seals and rocker cover sealed.

No more oil leak and I could take the car for a proper drive. I did so and just wanted to stay out in it. I could not believe how much fun the car was 🤣 it felt so quick. I would say it felt quicker than my Mk3 Megane, which was 320bhp! I could not stop smiling either. The car was unbelievable, better than I ever thought. This coupled with the fact it was an inferno FF, which is probably my favourite 172/182 colour got me thinking!! There was still quite a few bits I wanted to do and I could not really afford it, but where there is a will!!!

Bit more cleaning and thinking......

Some of you will have seen from other threads that I already own a track 172 Cup and until last weekend a pretty standard 172 Cup that I spent a fair amount of time sorting out to use myself. I had no intention of selling the Cup road car, but the inferno was too good for me to turn down. Was a bit greedy to have two blue Cups too!

I decided that I would finish the Cup and then sell this in order to pay for the inferno. My mate was happy with this, but I hate being in debt so worked flat out with both cars. There was also no guarantee the Cup would sell!

The next thing that annoyed me on the inferno and ruined the drive in the wet was the tyres. It had Nankang NS2R track tyres on the front and a pair of Michelin PS3 that were past there best on the rear. I had a spare set of Turinis from a 182 that I had broken for spares at the start of the year. These had a pair of almost new 195/45/16 Pirelli P Zero tyres, so I ordered another pair and dropped them down to wheel refurb company inspraytion. I have used these guys to refurb wheels for years. Small and professional company, who have always done a good job for a fair price. Tyres off, complete strip and refurb, then tyres back on. I went for their medium anthracite with sparkle lacquer. I was well chuffed with the finished result. When I asked for sparkle lacquer, what I actually wanted was glitter lacquer, but I am glad with what I ended up with.

I also got them as a favour to refurbished my upper and lower inlets in the same colour as the wheels.

I will get some better pictures of the car once I get a chance. Paintwork is stunning. This gives you an idea though.

The change of wheels and tyres transformed the way it drove. It was so much quieter too. Next thing to sort was the horrible sticky interior trim all the sports have and give the seats a shave.

I had the dash from a basic model so this was swapped over along with door pulls, hazzard panel and strip below the stereo. I also replaced the dash strips with carbon fibre ones and the gearknob with one from the lower spec model.

The standard seats are in fantastic condition, but the middle section had become a bit bobbly on both seats. This was sorted with the de-bobble machine and a wipe over. Only have an after pic of this unfortunately.

20200628_164728.jpg

The Cup sold to the first person to view this weekend, which means the inferno is now officially mine! I set about sorting the wonky exhaust system out. I removed the whole system to inspect and then put back on straight! It is a full Scorpion cat back, which it would appear is not that old. The rear mounts are poly bushed too. Once removed it was all cleaned and polished. All the exhaust mount bolts came out without any issues which was a right result. I tapped all the bolt holes and applied plenty of copper slip when refitted.

It is a really well made exhaust system, with plenty of adjustment. After a fair bit of adjustment once all fitted back up, think I have it sitting pretty perfect.

That is pretty much where I am at. I have completed over 500 miles in the last couple of weeks. It sounds and goes absolutely amazing. Surprises a lot of people, with what they thought were quick cars 🤣 I will be fitting solid engine and gearbox mounts. It has a evol lower dog bone mount and black powerflex upper insert at the moment. Front pads are DS2500, which seem pretty good and what was previously on my track car.

I am getting used to the paddle clutch, but it still catches me out every now and then! Over the weekend I ordered some TPI wheel bolts and new rear number plate light. Over the next couple of days I will post full spec and some better pictures for those interested. It also is a good reference point for me to refer back too. The car still has all creature comforts including air conditioning and cruise control.

20200721_105245.jpg

My end goal was to own another Mk3 Renaultsport Megane. This will probably still be the case, so not sure how long I will keep the Inferno. I do absolutely love this car and the turbo gives it that bit more straight line speed, which at times is nice to have. It is still quite refined and returning 34mpg! The noises the turbo makes is something I will never get bored of.

Only managed a couple of little jobs this weekend, due to being busy with other cars! Wheel bolts finally fitted and look really smart. I love shiny things 😂 Also ordered a new genuine rear number plate light. This is something I always tend to do as makes a bit difference. Took a run down to a new coffee shop and car meet Saturday morning.

Ktec solid engine mounts will be ordered this week. I have them fitted to the track car and they are great. Hardly any movement or vibrations from them. Much better for the turbo set up. It already has an Evol dog bone moun so that will be staying.

They are from Ebay, not sure how to post the link. Company called Nuts 4 Wheels. M12 x 1.5, 26mm thread length with 60° taper. Got some on the track car too.

Very very nice mate. Looked good when I saw it. Now even better. Proper little sleeper too 👍

Looks like something that stopped outside my place a week or so ago 😁

I was originally looking for an Inferno, awesome colour and Marks one is gorgeous 🤩

Got some Ktec uprated mounts. Purchased new in the end from ebay. Finally got round to fitting them today.

I will sort the mounting bolts!!

The old gearbox mount was shot and the two 13mm bolts both loose 😏

With gearbox mount removed I gave the area behind it a much needed clean and wax

I already had an Evol dogbone mount fitted. Only driven it round the block, but what a difference! Like my track car almost no vibrations in the interior. Solid on tickover and very little movement. Some of you may have seen my post about the ED paddle clutch fitted and better options for road use. Changing the mounts has made it a lot better and I may now stick with the clutch, but time will tell. I am so impressed with the difference it has made. Will try get some better pics this week, but the paint looks stunning in this weather.

I have also changed the front brake pads for standard Brembo ones. I have swapped out the DS2500 pads onto my track car as I have a track evening at Brands Hatch tomorrow. The calipers had some shims fitted, which was causing the pads to be very tight in the calipers. I have never run these on the track car and never had any issues, so removed them. I think they were probably the reason for slight binding on the front and noise when warm. Will see how I get on. Very happy with the car, is a real experience to drive!!

Inferno cleans up so nice.

Nice to see some positive upgrades making the drive better. I’ve got new OEM mounts all round on mine, forever tempted by something stiffer. Having said that, the gear change is tight as a drum anyway. Good call on the shims too, they deffo won’t have been helping, the pads are tight as it is.
I’ve never run shims road or track and always dress my pads slightly too allow some float.

Lovely project 🙂

How can there be little or no vibrations!? I have standard mounts, all new... apart from the Black series dogbone bush which doesn’t vibrate much.. but if I even add the polybush insert into the upper mount it becomes horrible, dash vibrates, keys rattle etc!

Are the Ktec mounts good?

I can't see how that can be either solid mounts and NO vibrations 🤔

These are the ones I purchased from ktec and the same as fitted to my track car.

I have owned my fair share of Clios over the last few years. I have always found if just one of the three main mounts is uprated(especially dog bone on its own), then this seems to cause a lot of interior vibrations. I also think it then causes that one mount to be taking more load than the others and transfer to the car.

I thought originally that by fitting solid(they are not completely solid, not far off though) that the vibrations inside would be unbearable. Completely the opposite. With engine, gearbox and dogbone replaced together it is excellent. I have used my track car as a daily for various periods of time over the years and if the mounts were that bad would have changed them.

With the turbo set up there is too much torque for the standard mounts in my opinion and these are perfect. There are obviously some vibrations, but greatly reduced from the set up I did have.

Hope that makes sense.

Assuming the KTR ones are just a sticker on a VT mount?
Cant see them being any different in shore rating can they?

They are identical to the VT ones, just powder coated with a sticker on I think? No idea on shore rating.

Cheers for that mate, I agree with the torque thing I’ve tried lots of variations and it’s okay with the standard mounts and poly dogbone but do still get a fair amount of engine movement even with the top mount cage ‘tightened’ to stop so much movement!

Also find even when new it doesn’t take long for the top mount to sag and the engine drop lower to the subframe, it’s visible from how the inlet lines up with my strut brace so I actually spaced it back up which works a treat!

I may give the Ktec mounts a crack though and WILL blame you if it’s not good! [emoji23][emoji23]

The ktec ones even come in vibratechnic bags

I just preferred the black powder coated finish of the ktec ones. Just need to find some decent bolts now or get a set zinc plated. Back to work next week so will work out if I can now live with the clutch or replace with an RTS one from Kam racing.

I reckon you will be impressed over the standard ones. Well worth the investment. Secondhand they sell for almost the same money as new too.

After a couple of weeks driving the car with the new mounts I am finding the clutch much easier to use. The worn mounts were really exaggerating the clutch. The ED paddle clutch will be staying.

I have driven the car in both wet and dry conditions and it puts the power down so well. It just goes! Service, Mot and clean this week hopefully if time allows.

In my opinion much better than the standard mounts. Got the Ktec ones in both the track car and turbo with Evol dog bone and they are ace. All three have to be done at the same time, but can't recommend them enough. No noise, hardly any vibrations, much less engine movement making gear changes better and they are not harsh at all.
