197 and Trophy in this months EVO

  Clio 172 mk2
For all the talk of 182s being so much quicker in a straight line, it really puts into perspective how the ultimate 182 couldn't put much more than a baw hair between it and a 197.

0.2 of a second?
Could probably be down to how much water the driver had drank or pissed out between runs.

"Ask any racer, any real racer. It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile; winning's winning."
--- Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) --- 2001

This just confirms to me that the 197 is the better car then.

Okay so round Bedford 197 is 0.2seconds slower, but it is better built and looks way better, so is IMO the better car.

Horses for courses. It's a hot hatch, the Trophy is better to drive, so for me the better car.

The 182 they used was a CUP so... "Sub standard" 182 still had the legs on the 197.

So if they had of used a "trophy" and not a cup you'd be arguin over 1.2 secs and not 0.2.

Calm down people. It just gives a bit of perspective. The 197 is pretty much as quick with a big dose of refinment, the Trophy has pretty much the same pace but it's more interactive. You pays your money, you takes your choice. I'm sure the 197 owners are happy with there cars, ditto the Trophy owners.
Make love not war. Save war for the civic owning cnuts.

Precisely!

Having owned both, I'd gladly own either. They are quite different in many ways, but both equally enjoyable cars to own.

Do i miss the Trophy? Yes.
Am i glad i sold it and got the R27? Yes.
Do i wish i could have kept both of them? Hell yeah!

Voice of reason. Both good cars.

I'll bring the mag on sunday. It's the trophy owned by the guy that owns the mag, it's a 182 trophy and a 197 cup. The times aren't the same as the old ones as the track layout's changed.

yeah, u mite be lookin at an old issue... because that was a 182 cup which the r27 was quicker than.

this is the latest one, not in the shops yet. only subscribers have got it so far i think.

0.2 seconds is nothing and hardly anything to argue over.Shows how good the suspension was on the trophy and how good the chassis is on the 197

  Did own 172 Cup + 182FF
I've read the article - they found the 197 frustrating as it's not adjustable and the ABS is too keen when you are trail braking to get the rear end into play (causing missed apex's).

They have a data-log trace of the cars and it shows that the peak mid corner grip in the 197 is higher than the Trophy (higher mechanical grip), but into and out of the corners the Trophy is faster and has the 'better' chassis.

Peak top speeds on the track were identical.

Personally - the only front drivers that I am interested in are the ones that let you steer the car on the throttle and brakes like a RWD, hence I wouldn't look at any of the 197's.

Horses for courses though. It's so close, it really comes down to what you prefer in looks and driving style.

JDM Civic Type R rules the front drivers though. 4 seconds is mad time on a track that length.

It was a Trophy, I am looking at it right now. It's not online yet because it's in the new issue.

just a quick question for those with the mags, was the 197 broken in? ie 10k + miles ? cos the car does get fast with age

  106 GTi
Don't know what your all moaning about ladies the Megane DCi 175 was faster round the track than them both ;) lol

A bloody diesel ?!?!?

I've always found it strange why EVO disagree so much on certain cars with other mags. Most other mags and Tiff (who even though he works on a crappy TV show is probably a far better driver than most in the magazine world) have always said the 197 is great at steering on the throttle. I'm not doubting the brilliance of the Trophy, I'm just confused by EVO's totally opposite views.

EVO have always said the standard 197 is good on throttle adjustability, the cup chassis makes the car more composed with higher limits, but less throttle adjustable. And LOL at Tiff, he's a great driver, which is why he can make any car dance, I'm more interested in what normal people can do! EVO's views aren't opposite, the same points have been raised in nearly every review I've read
Poor steering feel-To be expected with electric systems
Feels slow-To be expected due to the refinment
Too heavy (for a small car)-Modern curse!

Id take a car 1 second a lap slower than another if it was more fun. Im no racing driver so time is irrelevant, i drive for fun, not prizes. Ive always failed to see the point of timing these cars round a track, unless you're a race crew looking to buy a race car, why does it matter?
