197 cup - tempting or not?

  M4 LCI, X1, ZX10R
I would... but I would probably go for an R27 instead though.

But a white Cup would be awesome, and to have one of the first ones.

I'd still go for a trophy, the R27 didn't even make it into Evo coty, Trophy came 3rd (or 4th) a couple of years ago.

197 as a whole - Much better grip than my 182, and far more stability, but the steering lacks something to truly suggest it 'handles' better than the Clio II RS. Although at least the wheel is a sensible size this time around. I have to say, the 197 I drove was superb fun on the backroads. It just lacked a little sparkle on the dual carriageway.

I love the way people like YOU think EVO is the bible when it comes to road tests and because the R27 wasn't in ECOTY you won't buy one, deary me..

If you've driven one fair play but if not you can't judge...

I'll probably keep the 172 for a year longer, to get the house finished and then I will look at changing.

I as I can't fit anything bigger than a megane in the garage, it will be between a 197 (R27), Megane 225 or R26 or Alfa 147 GTA.

I want a turbo car next really so probably the Megane, but if the 197 had a turbo, it would be a easy choose.

They are COMPLETELY different to drive than a 172/182.

I'd rather have a bog standard 197 than a clio trophy or a 225 tbh.

197 isn`t as quick as 172, believe me. From 0 to about 45mph it even isn`t any faster than Clio 1.8 16v.

lmao...it is.

they know what theyr talkin about in that mag.

10 of the best drivers cars over a decade....didnt see any 182 in there...williams came2nd or 3rd. not up against ur evryday hatches either lol

Looks like a 1.2, would rather have a liquid yellow R27. Would never have either over my Mk1 172 though.

On a side topic, does anyone on here have a 197 with the revised gear ratios, and if so, does it make a nice difference to motorway cruising? I now find myself always reaching for an imginary 6th gear on the motorway, and in the 197 I was reaching for 7th at 80mph just to shut it up :D

doesnt cound far away from my 172?

i know the 197 will have brakes that actually work, but what does everyone else think of them?

I actually think the 172 brakes work really well..Is it true a standard 172 brakes from 100-0 faster than a Modena 360?..I am sure I've read that..

i doubt it?

Mines a cup too so no ABS for me. dry weather theyre fantastic, wet or greasy roads they're scary.

It is a nice mag. It's well presented, the photography is excellent, and the guys can doubtless drive. That's where it ends for me. It's a good read. It's my money though and I'll buy what I like, not what EVO says I should. Just another car mag. In fact, sometimes their opinions are more invalid than those of most other mags - all EVO care about is dynamics. I actually travel places in my car though rather than bleating on about which car was 1 second quicker round the EVO track, so the car as a whole is what matters to me.

The 197 is a lovely muscular looking car with incredible cross country pace and a pretty nice interior. I'm sure I've read in EVO that they love the 197 anyway? :)

Trophy came first in part one, against 13 top cars.

Trophy came third in part two, against 9 surreal/exotic cars.

Says it all ;)

That's great if all you want to do is race your mates the 300 yards from Maccas to KFC, but I know which car I'd rather be in out of those 3 ;)

the things thats tempting me is mainly handling. any idiot can drive fast in a straight line, its more about the twisty stuff imo. the brakes on the 197 look and probably are far better, and im told they handle a lot better?

i think a test drive is in order.

I quite fancy one me'self, mainly because of keeping up with a newer car/new shape etc, but would not have a white car, gotta fridge that colour.
need something with some actual colour for cleaning shine, etc.
Always said i will never buy a ford, or a white car, but as i have got older, the St's look nice & and i am warming to some white cars.?

Have driven one :rasp:. No offence intended, but I haven't read a review where the car hasn't been labelled as under powered. It may do the figures, but it 'feels' gutless. That's exactly how it feels to me. The 197 is, for me, the best current hot-hatch, but I'd still have any 182, or a prev gen cooper s works over one. The limits are so high on the 197 I didn't feel I could sensibly push those limits on the road.

If it's given more torque, at least the biggest complaint will be fixed. IMHO, the 197 is a better all round car than the Trophy, but a better hot-hatch? No chance.

Wasn't 10 best of the decade, it was 10 out of their coty feature, don't think 182 had entered coty at that point (entered later that year). But the only time they did test them together in the greatest hot hatch feature, williams finished behind trophy but above 197.

well ive got a R27 on order. the only gripe i have of it is that the ABS is too intrusive. but maybe ive kind of lost touch of the abs feel after driving a cup for a while.

Well I have done 570 miles in my R27 (no 375) and coming straight from a 182, I can make a good comparison.

I can honestly say, the R27 goes round bends faster and seems to be faster on the straights than my 182.
Maybe, my 182 wasn't run in very well but I have run the R27 in very well and not hung about like an old fart doing 3800rpm etc (but not going over 5-6k).

It feels more 'fizzy' than the 182, prob cos of the shorter gear ratios.
I have a sharp bend near where I work and in my Fiesta ST, I would go 45mph, the 182 - 40mph and the R27, well, even in this weather I am just under 50mph as I go round it and not even scared!
I also have a short stretch of DC and in the 182, I could just hit 100 (kph - I think I am reading the right dial ;o) ) before braking and I just done that in the R27 without going over 6500rpm and had time to coast for a few milliseconds before braking.

The only thing I miss from the 182 is, erm, erm, err, nothing. Not even the Xenons.

At the end of the day though I don't care if people prefer the 1*2 or not.

I like cheese and crisp sandwiches (with no butter) but lots of people prefer ham. I am not going to go on a sandwich forum to defend my decision.
I only buy things because I like them, not because everyone else does.

In other words, if you like the 197, get it.

F**K what anyone else says. Do you go online to ask people what house to buy or if Andrex is better than Charmin?

you would soon be regretting that;)

cant comment on the r27, not driven one yet, but a standard 197 lacks the rawness and engageing driveability my little tomato has:evil:
