197 fuel consumption...

The car is a 2006/06 pre-improved-gearbox 197.

Filled the tank right to the top from empty on xmas eve. £56 @ £1.04 per litre. (regular unleaded)

On way home this evening, the light came back on and the trip counter was reading 282 miles. (motorway driving, about 80 ish mph)

Now from my experience, the car will still travel about 25 miles on the light before it conks out...

Can anyone work the fuel consumption from that? The car is reading 21.3mpg average and that to me sounds f**king horrendous!

Incedently My Dad did was following in his Saab and used well under half a tank.

Top gears long term test 197 went back reading 22 mpg for the 12k or whatever it was in theres

Ian, that sounds right to me.

Its shockingly bad for a 2.0 NA car in my opinion.

A 225 will do better mpg than that!

Do a proper MPG test it's not hard.

Fill it up to the brim, reset millage, drive it about till it's empty, then fill it up to the brim.
Record millage
Record Ltrs of fuel on refil.
Then put into one of these

Its a company car, and other people drive it at work so i'm not filling it up so other people can use my fuel! lol

I don't 'drive' economicaly so to speak. but I very rarely go above about5/5.5000 rpm either.

It runs absolutely fine. Apart from costing me a small fortune! Glad when it goes on the 2nd jan! Start saving some money! lol

mine usually sits at 27 mpg then drops to 23 24 if driving hard, its about the same as my mapped 225 lol , but i dont have to run it on optimax so its bearable

likewise... driving hard it's the lower figure but can get low 30's quite easily now... thats with just over 2k on the clock and using decent petrol

I'm getting about 24mpg in my 197. That's pretty poor but better than my last couple of cars - an Audi S3 and a BMW 320i (and yes the Clio is way more entertaining to drive than these two German cars but not as well built).

I got 28 average out of a brand new, tight-engined one. The dealership tells me that you should expect well over 30 when the engine beds in... I'm not so sure.
