197 R27 Questions

No offense fella, but you seem to come up with a new car idea on a weekly basis.

I'd not go for the cup. The dash is horrible. I drove one with a couple of hundred miles on it. It looked nasty then. If you dont like your mk2 looking crap I'd hate to think what it would look like in 5 years etc.. Reminded me of a Ford Ka dash.

Are you aware how small the differences are in the two gearboxes?

old gearbox vs new gearbox
1st = 5.19mph/1000rpm - 1st = 5.18mph/1000rpm
2nd = 8.48mph/1000rpm - 2nd = 8.46mph/1000rpm
3rd = 11.14mph/1000rpm - 3rd = 11.11mph/1000rpm
4th = 13.70mph/1000rpm - 4th = 13.66mph/1000rpm
5th = 16.09mph/1000rpm - 5th = 17.00mph/1000rpm
6th = 18.94mph/1000rpm - 6th = 20.36mph/1000rpm

top speed 134mph@ 7074rpm - top speed 139mph@ 6827rpm

speeds in gears at 7250rpm (full power)
old vs new
1st = 37.62mph - 1st = 37.55mph
2nd = 61.48mph - 2nd = 61.33mph
3rd = 80.76mph - 3rd = 80.54mph
4th = 99.32mph - 4th = 99.03mph
5th = 116.65mph - 5th = 123.25mph
6th = 137.31mph - 6th = 147.61mph

revs at road speeds
old vs new
50mph = 2639rpm - = 2455rpm
60mph = 3167rpm - = 2946rpm
70mph = 3695rpm - = 3438rpm
80mph = 4223rpm - = 3929rpm
90mph = 4751rpm - = 4420rpm

Hardly a big difference. The shorter box is more suited to the car IMHO, one of the reasons I chose an R27 over a new FF or Cup. It feels a little peppier in the top two gears, but not much of course. I'd be surprised if it actually made a difference to the MPG above a placebo effect - because once you're trying to see better MPG, you'll automatically be more gentle. 300 miles from a tank is easy, I was getting 380 on our road trip, doing long rungs. Remember it's a bigger tank though as well.

And the new CTR is a great car, not much of a 'hot hatch' though IMHO, more of a GT, long distance cruiser. Very composed, very capable, but very sanitised compared to the first one as well. Also, I hate the stupid 'all or nothing' trim levels - GT has everything, or none-GT has nothing and is impossible to re-sell heh.

Try a Corsa VXR. Put your standard Cliosport prejudices aside, and forget everything you've heard from idiots that have never driven one on here, then go test one. I guarantee you'll be surprised how good it is.

I have an 08 so revised gearbox. I drove a demo 197 with old gearbox and i could not tell the difference to be honest. The new gearbox is not going to be so earth shatteringly different, that you would notice on the road/motorway, not as much as people say anyway!

You might not have the new gearbox, has to be a build date after October '08 - the only R27s with it are, iirc, numbers 480 upwards? What number is yours? I deffo don't heh, 07 number 57 here :) I have never been sat on the motorway and thought "gosh it's noisy in here" - because that particular overhyped point is really just b****cks. Mind you though, I am coming from a K-Tec'ed Mk1 Vee.

Seb thinks he's a cut above in his early model, dodgy ratioed 197 (more like 185) He'll take a heck of a hit when he tries to chop it in.

I've seen figures from 3 rollered 197s, with a good few miles on, that have made between 200-202bhp. And take a hit when he tries to chop it in? 99% of the market/public won't have a clue that the gearbox was revised. Only hardcore Clio geeks on here have a clue about that, and no one on here will be buying it because everyone expects about 20% off the going rate...

why i deserve the abuse is anyones idea! lol nice to meet you doh123. :D

If the car had a decent power to weight ratio, there would have been no need for the compromised gear ratios that Renault used in an attempt to mask its general lack of grunt.

Did GDI or some other tuner not report never having seen a 197 putting out more than 190 bhp?

Hmm weird that..my standard R27 with 6k on the clock put on 198.6bhp on the rollers at Faulkland Performance back in Feb this year..

also, we've discussed the alleged issues with the 197 many times. but that ain't what this thread is about tbh.

The 197s seem to consistantly be making their power, but there have been reports of some low miles ones that haven't. It's not like not making book power would be a new thing for a RenaultSport Clio however.

I'm not sure what the power to weight comment meant, do you dislike all RS Clios? It has 164 - same as a 182, more than a 172, less than a 172 Cup, 170 iirc. But it does have a lot more safety gubbins etc, which is unfortunately the way it goes these days. People want to see a 5 star car, but a 5 star car is a heavy car. Hence why it has more power to compensate for that. Yet it still managed to have brilliant handling and stopping power.

Anyway, that's not what this thread is about. You're not even a paid member, have you signed up just to troll and try and cause arguments, with your lack of knowledge and made up facts?

I feel I should point out as well, in my post up there it mentions the 197, with the old box, has a top speed acheived at 7,074rpm - I can confirm you can get over that, closer 7,300rpm on the flat hehe, and I bet it would hit the limiter downhill :D

If you put someone on your ignore list, does it mean that you don't see their posts? I never knew that, I just thought it meant they couldn't PM you....

Hehe, it likes the mount ;)

I'm all short trips, and a lot of bootage so about 25. 30 is easily acheived though, and granny driving doesn't get you much more so it's not worth it heh.

Just been out to test drive the new ctr gt and the cup.

Cup is shitty interior but i must admit its got a good amount of torque and the ctr seems to be faster but has slightly less torque. Ctr is a better car and is less of a toy like the clio, it pulls very well outside of vtec lol i dont know why people say its crap.

Clio is more grounded and seems to stick to the road where as the Ctr is still a bumpy ride but doesnt seem as tort around bends.

They are like chalk and cheese. I prefer the CTR in some retrospects but the 197 in others.

i'd be tempted to wait a while too as i am sure there is going to be a new version of the 197.

but then you could be waiting for ever lol.

when you looking at buying making a decision on what car to get?

Depends what i can afford mate.

Will be between an R27 or a new CTR GT. I prefer the CTR tbh. But ive got a lot of saving to do.
