197 strange engine noise. help please

Hi all,

Parked up yesterday evening and i could hear a strange noise coming from the engine bay.

So I got my camera and a light and took a few video's of this strange noise. From what i can hear, the noise is louder from the left hand side of the engine.

I took a few videos. I took 1 from the front wheel arch. As i could hear it a little clearer from there.

Any ideas? Is it just the cold or?

Can't see videos. All i get is the Youtube message "Cannot view. The URL contained a malformed ID"

Apart from the noise do you get any lights or messages on the display? I have one coming in next week with a dephaser fault after 31k!

Okay they work and that is the exact noise the one i have next week to play with is making.

Firstly, check that the noise vanishes when you raise the engine speed. If it does but comes back straight away (at warm idle) then the dephaser needs changing. If it doesn't then the solenoid and wiring needs checking/replacing.

Confirmation will be diagnostics with CLIP. You will most likely see DF080 as red and DF119 as amber.

Hi Mick.

I will check in a sec.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post on the thread. I shall call Renault on Monday, as i have only had the car less the 2 months... (used car 197 57 plate 34k)

They may take a gamble and just change the solenoid as its £90 vs £900ish. If you have a multimeter to hand unplug the connector from the top of the solenoid and put the probes on each pin. You should see a resistance value of 9.5-10.75 kOhms... if not, replace!

Thanks again Mick, I have not got a Multi meter to hand. I maybe able to get one at work, but that will not be until the morning..

Time to go check the car :)

The solenoid to ecu wiring also needs checking for continuity but thats Renaults job if you're covered by R-directs used car warranty. Report back though as the one i have is in exactly the same age/mileage range and i'm wondering if its an effected date range.

Mick,

Il check the car now. And call Renault tomorrow. As soon as Renault have looked at it, il give you a PM with their findings

Just checked the car.

Typical, the noise has now stopped! Il have a drive out this evening and see if it returns.

Would you recommend still calling Renault and showing them the videos?

They won't do a thing based on the videos, only on what they can see/hear.

The one i have did the same but it will get to the point that it does it all the time. take it for a run; does it feel flat from say 90 on and does it use more fuel (than normal)?

I shall take a drive this afternoon and see if the noise comes back. Il see how it feels on the drive :)

Well,

Just got back from a quick blast... The noise is still there, but its faint compared to yesterday's vids.

Leave it idling and see if it comes back louder... i bet it will.

Ive come to a 182 wanting to forget about turbo worrys after owning two but it seems the dephaser pully is like having a turbo anyway :-/

except when a dephaser pulley goes your engine doesn't ingest compressor shards

Same again today. Same noise but fainter.

Il see if i can find some time just to leave the car running on idle.

This sounds almost the same as the problem i'm having on my 172 at the moment(as someone mentioned, like an old printer!). Does it make the noise when the engines not started, just the ignition turned on? Have posted a video of mine on another thread.

might sound stupid but run the car and pull and hold the engine towards you and away from you see if the noise stops if it does its down to mounts a friend of mine had a similiar noise and turned out to be to do with the gearbox mounts.

doesnt sound like a dephaser to me sound more like a tensioner/idler noise

Dont forget the Clio III doesnt run the same dephaser as the Clio II and its not a failure its a dephaser fault which is why it needs CLIP'n first to confirm/deny the presence of DF080 and/or DF119

Well,

Went to Renault today.

A technician cam out to the car park to see if he could hear the noise that i have posted on the first page of this thread. The noise over the pass few days has been there, however has been at a lower tone and a tad longer sound spacing between it making the noise.

Technician opened the bonnet and near enough straight away, I could hear it. After about 10 mins of him listening and revving the engine and moving the steering wheel. He said he could hear it.

But, He could only hear it some of the time (I was standing away from the car and i could hear it all the time!)

I asked him if there was any form of diagnostic that they could perform to see if that might shed some light on it. His answer was NO. Its a mechanical fault.

He advised me if I wanted to I could book it in again for a full day. So they can see if they could hear and replicate the noise.

The car did not even make it onto any technical ramp or machine.

Question is? Is there some sort of diagnostic equipment that they could of tried?

Yes its called CLIP! Maybe they were busy and it genuinely needed to be booked in but I thought thats what you did.

It needs this to rule out the dephaser/dephaser solenoid being at fault as per my posts above with DF080 and DF119. If they are there then it proves the dephaser fault. If they aren't it is indeed either a mount or a mechanical component which needs looking in to.

Ahh but thats assuming a Catastrophic*fail, if say the dephaser broke in two (unlikely i know) or something it would cause massive damage too wouldnt it ?

Il book it in again for a full day. And see what they have to say...

I would cos imo they've done bugger all today and i hope you didn't pay anything.

Thought i would update this post, as it might be of use to someone else.

The car has been with Renault for the last two days.

They have admitted that they can hear the noise and that it is coming from the cam-belt pulley area. However, as its only making the noise they feel it does not need to be replaced under warranty. They say its not affecting the car and it will go away once the cam-belt is done this year.

Lets hope it does not cause an issue until it is needed to be replaced.

I purchased the 197 from the Renault dealership in sept 2011. The warranty runs out in March 2012.

All the checks have been carried out at the dealership it was purchased from.
