197 Turbo Anyone?

  Clio 197 F1 R27
Ktec are developing a turbo kit, not sure when it's due out but would be a good addition, along with exhaust, filter, cams etc....could see 230-240bhp even, any views on this?

Pointless.

Buy a fast car if you want a fast car.

Lets take a beautiful Chocolate Gateux...........then pour dog s**t on it. Same thing.

Also some Renault peps may say it voids the warranty.

the turbo fitted is likly to be at least 2K.

If one were to attempt such a thing i would use R26 running gear.

Could be quite the car.

buy an R26 if you want turbo power?

by the time you pay for the conversion it'll be silly money

Indeed.

The 1*2 Turbo upgrade hardly sold well!

Still it gives them publicity and shows they know what they are doing, etc etc.

I used to own a UK TT Supra and always thought about going single turbo, but the amount of work (fuel setup, remaps etc) needed to make them run right.....not worth it, they will never run like a standard car does. More fun - more hassle.

Its amazing how times change going by the initial reactions.

Few years back folk were drooling over the thought of a turbo 172. Now a days folk scoff at such a thought.

Is tuning dying a slow death?

  Clio 197 F1 R27
I don't think it's dying, just people now seem to have newer cars, finance deals help....and so they either don't fancy breaking there cars, or they can't afford to tune them unlike buying an older car and doing it up.

I'd turbo my 182 if i had the money, would no doubt regret if after, but would prob still do it.
I'd just add it to the list of stupid purchases i've made (like the £1500 set of 20" wire wheels i have sat in my garage which have never been fitted)
In fact, if i had a 197 and turbo'd it it would be one of my more sensible decisions. lol

The car is unlikely to be bought by anyone who would have the spare reserve to blow the warranty out of the water, and when the r26 is there, why would you want to.

Very very niche market.

Also insurance co’s are getting more and more reluctant to insure modded cars. (for a fair price at least)

saxo owners have ruined the reputation of mudded cars buy crashing all of them

We had no probs with coswoth etc owners

I've also had my fair share of silly buys when i was younger, i paid almost £3000 for my 3 piece Braid 19" Supra wheels  and £900 for a Veilside Titanium Exhaust & Decat :S

Yes, we are going to look at installing a turbo onto the 197 engine in the hope of gaining 80-100bhp. Part of this is to show what we are able to do and what can be done to the car. As with any type of conversion like this, it will take a fair bit of time to get right and we hope that our experience with the 172/182 turbos will help to get the car how we like it.

The 197 is a fantastic little car but anyone who has ever driven one will tell you it seriously lacks low down punch. A 280+bhp engine in the car, coupled with the fantastic gearbox, should make it into an extremely fun way to travel.

As already said, this will be a work in progress so we are not abloe to give any details such as costs, power gains, 0-60 times etc until we have our car finished and tested.

2.0 turbo vs 1.6 turbo......

Personally i wouldn't go near this, i doubt it would run right, and you'd be always having trouble. The engine wouldn't last half as long in the long run!

Vux tune specialists such as Regal are getting 230 bhp out of the 1.6T with maps only. Imo if a car doesn’t have a turbo dont plop one on it.

if car doesnt go round corners why dont vauxhall just sell thier cars in america

wont it just spin the front wheels and do nothing else?
I drive a 280hp lcr and it was rubbish. The 225 is far more manageable.

We hope to have some fun finding out the answer ;)

Our 172 turbo is fantastic in the dry, the diff has helped but it was still good before the diff was installed.

they do, its a GM car afterall. And you cant really say a corsa vxr doesnt go around corners. its been reviewed as one of the best mini hot hatches out.

True extra bhp may give extra tq steer and understeer with wheel spin but it depends on where you do your driving. In Miltion keynes for example it has no corners of any type just rounabouts and strights and neally all roads are 60. exta power would be fun there.

a clio 197 turbo with 280bhp will handle very diff to a standard one anyway

Also You are missing the point. The question was “opinions on a clio 197 turbo”

Mine was buy a car with a turbo to begin with. Its been designed with one in mind. And for £500 ish you can have a remap giving about 230bhp that is reported to be manageable.

Why pay £4000 - £5000 for a turbo kit which will give you similar increases in power and most likely make the clio 197 not feel like one.

The clio 197 and corsa vxr has different driving characteristics. why ruin a 197 with a turbo?

Sounds good if Ktec pull it off, looking at their previous cars i don't see why not!

But 80-100bhp, half what it is now is a bit over the top, maybe 50bhp max would be more realistic imo but i'm not a tuner so what do i know lol.

As stated earlier, FWD cars can only put down about 230bhp at the most, this is why the Astra VXR gets whipped round a track, if you can't use the power, it becomes pointless.......

It would be insanely quicker than the R26 for starters....

I like when K-tec does things like this, im sure if would be a very good conversion. Like David said, they are only doing it because they can, doesn't mean you have to buy it, just shows you what they can do!
Look foward to seeing it

I read in this months evo about the Corsa VXR 888 version with 225bhp, they said it had top many horses for it to handle, but it was still damn fun, i wouldn't mind one :)
