1990 miles to decide - engine tuning

Nafoff

well i am due my 72k service in 1990 miles time, so i want to prep for that.

My thoughts have been that because its a major service (and i believe) my timing belt service i thought i would get some engine work done to tune it up a bit.

i have had some ideas, and spoke to a few members and my thoughts so far are.

Cup alternator set-up / no air-con (only need cup bracket for this)
Cams (advised by another member)
a remap
match inlets

my 172 only has mild tuning parts at the moment, ie a itg panel filter and decat + catback stainless exhaust.

i would truly appreciate anymore ideas / knowledge to help me make my decision prior to the 1990 miles left creeps up on me

Removing the power steering and replacing it with an electric or fully manual rack is suppossed to free things up a bit as well.

You will need all the associated "cup" brackets and a cup alternator, if you wish to lose the aircon

Cams are a good idea at cambelt time, but you are looking at £700 for a set of catcams iirc?!

The cup alternator is not the same.

IMO dont do it, its alot of wonger for 20hp. Trust me I know what it feels like after you get used to the power and you think 'meh'

My current one has cost me 9k to get to 240hp and Im thinking of selling it LOL!

Have you had it mapped then Ben?

Ph-reebone, cams, modified inlets and remap is a good call.

in what respect chap?

my aircon doesn't work after the badger ate it a while back, and i don't / wouldn't use it anyways.

as far as i knew, all i needed was the alternator and the bracket, the pipe can be reused with a bit of tinkering.

blast from the past stan, past of the valver days.....hope all is well, is the inlets something apd could do?

Depending on budget.....

Cams with belt change. Matched inlets and de-aircon. If you can stretch to it switch to omex management and your ready for bodies at a later date

OR if your flush

Cambelt change and 'charge the bugger

it made 225bhp when gdi built it, then had another rebuild with a few different bits and did a chunk more, new block, higher comp and some other bits

TBH... any "reputable" garage/Renault specialist with the correct timing tools should be able to fit cams!?

Just dump the PAS altogether, i have and now that i'm used to the weighting i love it!

Fit a shorter aux belt and bypass the PAS pump, simples

Could even sell you PAS hoses and make a little money too ;)

Cams - they are great and make the car much stronger at the top end, combined with a remap and matched inlets i gained 20bhp :) (went from 156 to 177 at the time) Although the car is pretty much the same as standard till 5k power wise

Take heed of the above, get some good suspension, brakes and tyres and spend the rest on proper tuition at track days, your car will be much quicker!

Super cup inlet? Predicted to make similar power to ITB's, but much cheaper?
(Just an option, no need for the fanboys to start)

I suppose the question would be.... What is your budget?

You will be looking around £1000 for fitment of cams/belt change I imagine?

Inlet work £200'ish?

Remap £250 - £300?

When the inlet is released, going from whats been said, you could get it fitted with cams for that money. But, obviously until it's released it's impossible to talk bhp etc.

true true....

I am eagerly awaiting on the super cup inlet manifold!!

Has Matt "run it in" yet?!
Not sure fella, I know that with all the motorsport stuff he's uber busy at the moment. I think after the spam-fest that the last thread became they'll keep it under wraps until it's ready for sale.

After seeing GDI's/Jesus's supercharged thing, that is the ONLY way forward.

Hybrid will be sporting one of those soon!!!
