Well well well. I've managed to squeeze 4 trackdays in so far this year, starting with the Donington as mentioned above at the end of May. With having the car off the road completely now (SORN'd), I wasn't able to check the car over after being parked up for 8 months. In that time not alot changed (apart from the paint), and I just replaced the front discs and pads, rear discs/bearings and hoped for the best at Donington. It was a bit of a rush getting it back together but I managed just fine.
Fortunately the car behaved itself perfectly. I bedded the new discs and DS3000's in on the sighting laps and it was faultless throughout the day. Very few pics from that day I'm afraid, just a few from the paddock (note the Volvo lurking in the background, that's the daily/towcar):
Next came Mallory Park on the 4th June. This was the RTOC National day again, the same as I did last year. We made a weekend out of it and had a superb time. The track was run with the additional bike chicane on the back straight. This was quite a nice compromise, especially after talk of running the chicance half way around Gerards which would have ruined one of the best corners in the country.
Shortly after Mallory we set off for the Le Mans 24hr, instead of coming home afterwards we followed this up with a weeks worth of driving around Europe. 2500 miles were covered over the 10 days around some of the best (and most famous) roads in Europe. Not strictly related to this project as I went in my Volvo, but I'll share a few pics anyway. Another thread might follow specifically at some point.
So, back from Europe, and next on the horizon was Cadwell on the 6th July. My Uncle was over from Canada for this so it was nice to be able to have him with me for the day. He's grown up racing Karts in his youth with my Dad, so his first visit to Cadwell was some time in the 60's. His house/land in Canada is named Cadwell Park after the place, so it was nice for him to come back and get on track with me
.
The car was quick as usual, but started suffering from a vibration under braking. First thoughts were just a warped disc, but then it had symptoms not really associated with that. I carried on for the rest of the day regardless and just put up with it and enjoyed myself and entertained the Uncle.
So that brings us into July and 3 weeks until the next trackday. The vibration was bugging me following on from Cadwell as above, and I wasn't able to trace it. I checked every bolt going, found a few little bits but nothing that'd cause the problem I was having. A few laps of my drive proved it was still there so I set about renewing the entire front end. I had the subframe off, replaced the discs with a new pair of brembo HC's, replaced both bottom ball joints as they were showing some wear, replaced both track rod ends for the sake of it, cleaned everything up and double checked everything, then hoisted the subframe back up. A further lap of my drive and all seemed good, happy days.
Onwards to the 25th July, and the Williams Clio clubday arranged through Circuit days at Donington. A fantastic turnout for Clio's with 20+ or so being on Track. Thanks again to Northy for arranging if you happen to read this.
So there we are, 4 trackdays so far this year and no more on the horizon. We'll see what happens
