2000 x reg clio 172 sport

  172, vectra dti
I have just brought one of these and have now spent £700 quid trying to fix a revving issue. I have just had her serviced including oil plugs and a cam belt change i have also had the idle air control valve replaced. The garage i went to has now suggested it could be the accelerator cable or the throttle body. Just wondered if anyone else has had experience of this and could suggest a cure as the car sits idling and it physically shakes the car also it revs freely by itself from 500rpm right up to 3000rpm it seens worse about 1500rpm

The main console also displays SERV and the airbag lights are adisplayed. the garage said something about wiring issue and said he was going to sort the connecters out. i am just worried i have bought a bit of a lemon.

May i suggest you take it to someone who actually knows what they are doing?

£700 later and its still not fixed?! i'd be getting my money back and taking it to somewhere where the guy knows the difference between an Arse and an Elbow.

TBH these cars need to go to specialists or a renualt stealership. Theres been many a story of people on here getting unkown garages to do cambelts etc and getting them wrong. (I'm not saying they are all bad but I would of got the cambelt done at a specialist if it even need doing in the first place).

It sounds like it could be an air leak to me. Theres a thread on here somewhere where someone was experiancing the same problem so try a search.

Airbag and Serv light is normally caused by a dodgy connector under the passenger and/or drivers seat. Theres a few threads on how to fix that also.

Let us know how you get on.

i wish i had done that. the garage i went to said the cam belt didn't need doing but seeing as i had the cash i thought i would get it done so i could have a few years trouble free driving my specialised place was so riduculously costly i thought i would take a risk. the garage than told me the job wasn't as bad as they thought and there was some form of gap they were able to get the belt put on. so heaven only knows could have been a bunch of cowboys! it is true you get what you pay for. I will search for the thread you mentioned

I had an air leak in between my TB and Inlet Plenum which was causing it to rev to stupid RPM's. Get a new gasket for there or sum of teh gum stuff you can get as it'll give a better seal and tighten the b*****d up!!

I found this out after replacing my throttle cable to which was split at the pedal with only around 2-3 strands still attached to the clip

I cleaned the throttle body and it sorted this issue out.. only takes half an hour

PM me if you want instructions

Right then ladies and gents

i am loosing the will to live with this problem. I have now replaced the throttle body and air intake manifold and as previously stated have serviced the car with all the correct parts and had the cam/timing belt replaced and i have run out of option. I have taken it to a garage who ran the basic diagnostics through it and it displayed no codes:quiet:. Just wondered if you guys had any other suggestions as i really don't want to hand it to renault if it can be helped as its a little close to xmas to start with bills ending in lots of zeros:mad:

Take it Renault, get them to do a diagnostic on the Clip (£35 ish) then take the car somewhere else to have the fault rectified.

It could be anything? you have replaced the air intake manifold? did you replace the gasket between the throttle body and the manifold. also there no need to replace a throttle body on a ph1 172 as its all mechanical. what does the cable look like is it frayed or any notches on it. when does it occur?

Take the throttle body and upper inlet off again. Remove all sensors and clean them thoroughly. Check all the gaskets are ok and re-assemble.

As said above it could also be the throttle cable. Do the revs drop when you lift the throttle pedal up if they do then you need a new cable.

Always start with the cheapest things first!

next on my conquest will be the cable however its going on a snap on diagnostics tonight then they are gonna disconnect the battery in the vain hope of resetting all the sensors and ecu then once they drive it in the morning then they will putr it back on the machine to check for fault codes if that draws a blank it will be the cable changed and the f**k it ! trade in for something with less hassle maybe an alfa lol!!!

yeah its called specialized renault but every time i have ever contacted them or taken the car down they have always been too busy or just plainly not interested which i found quite dissappointing really as they are 5 mins from my house.
