2002 1.2 16v dying

  1.2 16v clio
Hi guys, 1st post so be gentle lol

anyway driving to scotland in my g/f clio on friday and occasionally the car was giving a little blip, just a slight loss of power, litterally the revs would drop slightly and then pick up, did it a couple of times, but nothing major.
Anyway on the saturday i was driving a short distance and the car would lose power, drop from 4000rpm down to 1000 and would not go, anyway as the drive went on it seemed to almost cure itself (the drive was 20mins odd)
On sunday when it came time to go home, car was doing the same again, loss of power, revs dying, then picking up. So parked the car in a carpark and had a quick look to see if all connectors were ok, vac pipes were on. could see nothing apparent so had another go at driving. i got 30mins down the road at 80 (would do no more) i assumed this was down to a dirty map sensor, anyway the car started losing power again revs dying so pulled into a service station, bought some tools and removed the airfilter as it was dirty - hoping the map sensor would work a bit better if it had less restricted air to it. Anyway car still running cack so i tried the wiper stalk trick to see if any fault codes were logged, there were none, last thing i could think of was an ecu reset, so dicsonnected the battery for 10mins, this seemed to do the trick. i then managed to drive for 2hrs with no problems. all of a sudden though i lost all revs and the little engine light at the bottom right came on, as did the stop light ect - the engine had stalled, i was lucky enought to coast into the services an park up, tried the ecu thing again but no luck this time, car was idling lumpy, and then died again and would not restart.
My question is would this be the TDC sensor - if this had failed would it cause the car not not run, i know it wont allow the car to start but does it have any part when the car is running?
Would a failed coil pack cause these symptoms?
When the AA guy came out he checked the coil pack but could find no output from it, BUT if the TDC sensor was faulty he wouldnt would he, i assume the TDC stops the spark and fuel until its happy with the timing position.

Any help guys

thanks

yeah if the ecu cant see anything coming from the tdc sensor it cant tell the engine is turning. I would suspect thats what it is

sounds like the MAP sensor to me, pretty common through all the range but causes slightly different symtoms every time

Check the metal cover near the drivers side, it covers the wires from the cockpit to the engine. I had the same trouble and it was the metal cover rattling so much it was wearing the wires away, making the revvs die and the engine stall. Fixed by taking the cover off and putting silicon over the bare wires.

that was a recall , so iirc if that is the fault you can take it in to reno free

cheers guys, meant to say bout that metal cover, i didnt remove it but it does move around loads, probs 5-7mm either way. ive asked me g/f to speak to her dealer to see if the mod has been done, the loom is one thats covered in rubber, but that said there is so much movement it could have easily worked its way thru.
so not the coil pack then? i suppose id more likely get it missing that dying wouldnt i?
if the MAS sensor i suppose my 1st port of call would be to give it a good clean with carb cleaner, and check the connections are secure?

MAP sensor not the MAS sensor id just get a new one tbh and have the error codes removed from the ecu

Ah right, whers the MAP sensor?
can i not disconnect the batetry to clear codes? IRC the ecu on a clio does not store fault codes does it? AA man tried to get them out of the car yesterday but his pc kept crashing, plus if i do the thing where u hold the wiper stalk button in it does not bring any codes up?
soz for being a dope lol, new to the clio, had a few lags tho, thinkin bout the clio sport tho, a nice v6 to wizz me about

map sensor is on the top of the engine on the left hand side, about the size of a match box.
that dash thing only brings up dash faults not engine faults.

ok kewl, thought it brought up injector faults ect?
is the MAP sensor the as you say top left slightly behind the engine, nr the bulkhead, nr that metal cover then? think ive seen it, hard to think as the car aint here for me to go have a look at. How much is a map sensor, if you know of the top of your head, save me calling GFS carparts or renault

cheers for ur help btw
