as above brought a few weeks ago it failed its mot got it cheap all fixed up but its on 40k and is 9 years old and the cam and aux belts are original obviously i know they need doing asap but i need to drive it 30 miles to get them done do you reckon it should be fine its only done 6 thousand miles in the past four years i think ive got no choise but to drive it what would you do?

If you were looking for someone to say ''It will be fine, go for it'' then drive it. I personally couldn't care less what happens as I don't know you but I'm just saying. Do a search on the forum, theres a lot of people that have had snapped cambelts.
Basically, you have a 9 year old rubber band holding your engine together.

im gettin it done i have to get the mot done on tuesday as thats gotta be done then i shall drive it home then to the garage asap to get both belts done

its one of they things, it might snap, it might not!, chances are it probably wont, however theres no way of telling! id probably tow it there as a precaution and ask them to push it into the workshop lol

Your call totally and maybe some are being a little paranoid but its called "Gambling" for a reason as you may win but you may also lose! IF you do take it for MOT and the belt run fails, say whilst they leave it idling, you will kick yourself as there will be no come back from the test station. If however you get it done before the MOT you know its done and will be future proof for another 5 years/72k (Remember, it is which ever 'event' you get to first not either or depending which is more convienient for you). I've also seen the belts snap Fred but that is, granted, more on the 1.6 K4M but I am off to fix a 172 timing belt failure on Tuesday to so I'd echo what they're saying above. I know exactly how you feel as i'm in exactly the same situation but with my Alfa...
... I've just bought a 147 Lusso with no MOT and no documented service history. Belt changes on these are every 36k and at 71k it's is LONG overdue a change. I drove it on and off the transporter that delivered it and I thought "Yeah, i'll chuck it in for MOT to see how bad it really is before spunking out any cash on it". Then, I took the timing belt cover off as I've never touched one of these before and curiosity got the better of me - fairly simple job on these but not only was the belt all degraded and cracked but the main tensioner unit (Nylon/Plastic mix on the Alfa) had so much play in it that the belt is barely tensioned correctly. There's no chance i'm starting it again let alone driving it for MOT until the belt, waterpump and variator has been changed now.
