So, bought a 2003 172. On saturday, everything seemed fine, toook it out tonight for the first proper drive and there's some sort of rattle like noise when idle, and wehn your between 4500RPM and the limiter in 2nd 3rd and fourth, (not tried fifth) the car seems to die a bit, it will still accelorate but just not like it should. It does this sometimes, but goes fine the next time

Any ideas or advice? Thanks!

Easiest way i think is stand in front of the engine. If the noise appears to be coming from the bottom left area then it could indicate dephaser pulley. Try a search also as theres probably a guide somewhere

Thanks, would the dephaser pulley cause the flat spot at exactly the same point in acceloration ineach gear or would it vairy?

Cheers!

Iirc it cause a flat spot at the point where the VVT (think thats what it's called) kicks in

Errrm, it would vary with mine, could put the power down and very little would happen, lift off, then put the power down again and it would be fine. Wouldn't happen everytime but was becoming more common as the dephaser got worse. Not saying for certain yours is a dephaser issue but once mine was replaced my problem was cured.

Ok, ill get the pulley checked because if fossie is correct then I think that's what it will be, seems that instead of giving an extra kick when the vvt kicks in, it dies a bit instead.

Thanks for the info!

Got the car into renault this weej, turns out that the flat spots are caused by a fucked altenator, lack of power in the battery means it can't cope with the power of the engine at the higher end of the revs so it cuts the power! Costing 460 for the new altenator and the belt kit.
