2k Garage Project

Need some help peeps. Want something which will take my mind off life...like a project. I have a Single garage...box of tools...and lots of spair time. What do you suggest, need to get looking for the Winter(best deals) and only want to spend 2k on the whole job.
So far i cannot get my mind off this idea..

Mini with Type R or some Turbo convertion?

Suggestions please as my head hurts...

Small car (Clio) with the biggest engine you can get cheap.

Why waste your time tuning a little engine when a more poweful engine can be had.

Get a V8 or something in a Clio

I like some of the Kit cars available...but how much do you have to do to build one of these?? It must take a lot of man hours to get this right? Idealy want something which i can drive on Sundays to local tuning shop, buy a mod, go back to garage, fit it..and test the same day. Keep me interested.

Edde. Obviously you have balls the size of giant aussie eggs. + i already have had a clio...old and new...fancy something differnent.! cheers for the "i dont value my life" imput tho! ;)

You could get new harness pads for the toniq r from halfords!

You get full instructions with kits mate, they dont jsut dump it on your doorstep in a big box!

Takes a very long time to build a kit car from scratch, and youd have to be able to live with having your donor car taking up the driveway for a few weeks while you strip it.

If it was me, Id probably get a mini, strip it out, rebuild the engine, possibly get a respray as well and sort out the interior with a couple bucket seats etc. Although Minis aint everyones ticket I think theyre pretty cool!!

Good Luck with whatever project you take on!!

That Toniq R is interesting. Is it 4k for the whole car? Engine, gearbox and everything? Do you think they have a long waiting list?

Im not clued up on Kit cars what so ever. but i like the sound of it, what do you think the insurance is like? Any special kit car insurance available? Why will i need a donar car?

What are Westfields and Caterhams like to build? cost wise too? Sorry about all these questions, but i really dont have an idea at all. And by the sounds of it, some of you have done the research already.

However like Rick has said, i like the idea of a Mini. Perhaps even a Hyabusa Mini. ;) strip it to bear essentials, 1 seat and a fat engine...obviously not of the austin kind. I keep hearing of these Type R converstions, does anyone know about this? Really up for it now, and want to start at the weekend...if the valver sells. <toucheswood>

Ive heard of one Type-R conversion but I dont know much about it, however there are plenty of companies out there who specialise in minis so you could try searching for some of them.

I doubt the Toniq R comes with the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes etc at that price, hence the need for a donor car to rip all the parts off. And IIRC caterhams/westfields start at about 8-10k in kit car form.

As for insurance, I think you can get specialist insurance. They usually limit you to a certain number of miles tho. However, if your only using it at the weekends this wont be a problem.

Dad built his Westfield from scratch for about 9k a few years ago. Give me a bit ive brought my digital camera to work with me.

ahh so ill be look at more like 8-10k OTR for most kit cars. Thats a little more than i want to spend. The minis a much cheaper alternative, and easily tuned for nothing. Think its a good idea to buy a new shell and start from scratch? This company sells refurbed shells and sub frames for quite cheap...a start i suppose. Everthing about the mini is cheap...especially typres..:D Cheers for the input.

best bet is to buy an accident damaged pre registered kit car. That way you avoid the SVA

I really fancy getting a 16v, maybe accident damaged to do this with. Strip it out and use it as a track day car, and to keep the miles down on the 172. Am saving a bit of cash to do this after christmas.

1380cc, stage 2 head, webber carb. best way to describe the handling?... have you ever been karting? just like one those but a lot faster!! bit scary on the motorway tho, sneeze and youd change lanes..

Get a Metro GTI, (dont laugh), make sure the shell is good, maybe spend £300-£400 on a MOT fail. Head to scrappies and get a 1800 K-Series (loads about), if you get one with VVc, scrap it and put normal cams in (VVC have bigger valve sizes). Get the ECU sorted to run, and you could have 140 odd bhp. Visit motobuild, get suspension sorted, then with rest of your money, do basics, such as paint, brakes etc. With this you will cause a lot of surprises on a track or road. This conversion is easy to do, and leaves you with a very surprising q car. This is what I would do, if I was building a track special/weekend funcar. Forget the image problems, those who know, all say these wee cars are massively underarated, look at a few old CCC mags if you dont believe. K-Series is the new crossflow, easy to tune and not to pricy. This type of thing interest anybody else

Mk2 Escort.

Then put a 2.0 XE Vauxhall engine in it. Go for the forest arches, itll look the bollox, and rwd

Alex i like your thinking...a metro would v.v.good. Ideal for what im looking for. Same as the mini really, v.easy to work on..and v.v.high fun-factor.

But

Jon R, your a genius. I need some rwd. I need to have a sideways fun machine. Im sure it was the Mk1 which was RWD tho...or maybe a Mexico. Ha. Hit the nail on the head. Has anyone driven one of these before? Whats the handling like? Looking some up now.

Mk1 and Mk2 escort were both RWD. If you want the vaux engine which i recommend ask some of the rally boys. Ill try and find a link.

Basically get a 2 door MK2 shell - find a solid one.
Think you can get a XE vaux engine for about £4/500 then talk to these guys: http://www.sbdev.co.ukwww.sbdev.co.uk.

Then when your done ill come and have a gander!!

Dont forget the forest arches, or the X pack ones.

I just love mk1/2 escorts, BIG BIG smile factor. Few weeks ago almost bought a mark1 with a rover V8 fitted (was very excited going to look at it), but unfortunetly, engine had never run and was unknown, and shell was a bit of a dog (welding upon old welding). He was also wanting £600 for it. Last I heard it had gone for £150 (probably worth that, but a lot of work required). However it would have been interesting I think
