36k Service on 172

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
How much should this be from Renault and/or a specialist garage? I realise the aux belts need changed, so its a pretty big service, but just how big?

If Renault prove to be too expensive, we'll just take it to a guy who owns his own garage now and used to work for Renault. He's tip top.

I'd go specialist if it's out of warranty. Not sure on price, but I think about £400 from Renault IIRC from on here, so prob £250-£300 at a specialist....?

I was told £400-£500+ from two different renault dealers but paid £250 at RENTECH.

Right, check this...

I phoned Renault, they said the service would be £270 all in. However, when I said it was 172 and 51 plate, they said the timing belt needs changed every 5 years or 72k miles. So they priced that up and said it was £607 inc. labour for all that on its own, then the service on top! F*ck that.

Anyway, I told Gem and she checked the service book and receipts with the car and it claims that the timing belt was changed last May @ £120 by a non Renault garage. Isnt that a bit cheap?

So I doubt it'll need the belts service now? Or will it because at that price maybe the tensioners weren't done? Anyway, the service book states timing belt changed at last service.

Hmm.

spoke to RenTech yesterday...£300 for 36k service including Aux belt and VAT etc...

£660 if I want the Cam belt done at the same time. Wasn't Mike I spoke too though as he's on holiday apparently..

It was over 7 months ago when I had mine done down there, must have put the price up, don't blame him tbh.

That £270 quote would be for just the service, not the aux belt, as the Renault guidance was only to change these @ 72k when your car was new. Later, they changed the guidance to 36k. £600 for cambelt sounds about average from a stealer.

On the other hand, £120 for a timing belt in May is ridiculously cheap - that can't be right, it's 5-7hr job!

not blaming anyone...just wasn't sure if Mike did a discount for Cliosport members so was going to wait till he's back and call again...

my cam belt isn't due till about june/july next year but thinking I might just get it all done now to save money in the long run..

afaik the belt kit itself costs a bit more than that. Unless the labour was billed seperately, or done cash..

Apols you have taken me the wrong way  I meant I dont blame Mike if he has put his prices up as his prices were very low, my bad.

I got my cam and aux belts done at Rentech back in June and got a very nice price from Mike but then it helps having a Cup as its a easier job.

Also had another quote from elewhere which i asked if they could beat/match as i said i'd prefer them to do the work.

No... prices havnt changed...

Its £250 for the standard 36K service (belt change only)
and its £300 if you have a new tensioner/bearing kit fitted as well

had mine done couple weeks ago there :approve: was £285 mind you, but i guess that accounts for the itg filter (not replacing of)

I did get a quote from the stealer, and that was in the high £400s area iirc

No that sounds about right for service, cambelt and aux belt with Mike. Had mine done by him in the summer.

Think Maz was querying the 36K service

Mine's in on Tues with West End Garage (RS Tuning) for Aux belt + kit + Cambelt for £460. Not for a service though.
