3m Carbon Application

  Renaultsport Clio 172 Cup
I bought some of this the other day and went to apply it to my gear insert and dash strips but it doesnt stick very well at all.

Is it just a matter of applting it or does the glue require heating or something first?

Anyone else had experience with this?

You must clean the parts you want to wrap througly 1st.

3M suggest prepping the surface by sanding or even spraying.

I never bothered.

Take the sheet and heat it with the backing still on it to make it softer.

Then peel the backing off, and apply loosly to your surface.

Heat with a hair dryer and strech the vinyl around so you have no rough surfaces.

Trim the excess with a knife once it cools again.

Check my 182 thread, I've just recently done this.

It seems liek when you peel the backing off its quite forgiving as its a dry application vinyl [as opposed to wet and squigying the water out after application] letting you repositon it if you make a mistake!

I have done my dash strips now, which were p*ss easy, however I took my wing mirrors off today, and for the last hour I have been trying to get the wrap on but it just keeps having creases in it. Its too hard to do on wing mirrors.

Anyone got any suggestions or tips?

I find it easy to fit to straight pieces, however I am struggling getting it around the mirror back

I found that it was easier to cut a peice that was much too big and use the excess to create the curves with the stretching.

Then let it cool for about an hour and trim it afterwards as it shrinks slightly when it cools.

I think the perfect thing is having 3 or 4 hands to do it with lol.

Or you cud just get someone to help :p

Can you do this like applying t**t strips? Water + fairy liquid to lube the surface up and credit card/squeeze all the water from underneith while getting any air bubbles out?

Unsure Alex... its supposed to be applied dry.

Theres a lenghty PDF on the 3M site explaining best practise.

On the back of the vinyl, there are air channels to let out any bubbles. They're pretty effective TBH ::)

nooo!!!. you cant use any water on it, it a dry application vinyl, designed to be used without lubrication. if it goes tits up you should be able to peel off/reposition at least once more. and for anyone that doesnt know heat is your friend. especially if you screw up. eg(please excuse pics)
creased, ruined

this was saved due to adding a litttle heat. note that this is just some cheap wapping film, the 3m will be much better.
