52 plate 172 with 47k Miles...2.5k

In early december got a clio 172 52plate with 47k on the clock. originally i had a corsa 1.0 so its a bit of a difference in power.

i got 500quid p/x for my corsa, and paid 2k cash for the car, which had 10 months MOT and 2 months tax left.

its in excellent condition but was a registered cat D in 2004. apparently had a front bump on the passenger side and u can see the slightest dint in the front of the bonnet, i took a friend who is really into cars and knows quite a bit and he said i should get it straight away. It has xenons, the job lot.

In the end i thought what the hell, it had been hpi checked and all that and it was sound.

When i signed the dotted line he told me that there was only one key, there was also none of the manuals or booklets with the car so all i had was the car with a key lol but hey ho, i have a smart car with low miles for around 2 grand :D

most salvage cars dont come with any history mate mine never but i did buy if from salvage lol , just make sure your get your belts done

  Clio 2.0 Sport 172
I just bought the same thing but for 4 grand lol

It has only 39k miles on it, and a full service history, new wheels all the extras

I'm convinced it was money wisely spent

good buy if a lil shady......could probably cane it about and sell it for the same in a few months !!!! havin one key is a b**ch.my best mate just lost my van key and its costing
135quid to get a new one so be feckin careful !! my williams only has 1 so i have a climbing carabeena clip on it so everytime im out with it the thing stays firmly clipped on a belt loop....... wise idea my friend lol

nothing with it. just a car and one key. it was advertised as cat D too so wasn't like they were hiding anything.

the corsa i had before had a new bumper, bonnet and front light as it was in a bump and nothing was wrong with it driving wise, so i jus thought of it that way. gonna sort a key out sometime probs, is the best way just to get one from renault?

I wouldnt have touched that mate! No history, one key, CatD registered?

Would rather have paid an extra grand for a straight one fwith higher miles

nothing wrong with the car you bought the price reflects the one key missing and the cat d registered against it, i would have bought the car aswell, and if its really bothering you get all the locks changed and get new keys simple.

  Clio 172 Cup
i only had one key when i bought my cup for salvage, you can go renault and get the old keys coded out mate i no they can still open the door but they wont be able to start it, i never see the problem with cat C and D cars the way the car market is more and more cars will not be fixed as it just not worth the £££ to do it, so if you have the no how you can buy a bargin.

if your happy with it mate you have had a good buy

My car's only got one key, although everything else is in order and I just haven't had the inclination or motivation to buy a second!

I don't really see the one key issue... people lose keys every day. At over £100 a pop to get a new one, I don't see the rush!

People who wouldn't touch a car with one key - are you saying if the seller went to Renault and paid for a new second key, you would instantly find the car more genuine!?!

even if i do only have one key, i still have a proper steering wheel lock that covers the whole wheel so they have got a job on.

cat d aint so bad, an airbag in the seat going off will write off a lot of 172s...

yeah, i agree, you'll open up a can of worms on this subject, and to be honest people ain't got a clue about vehicle catagories, lots of false perceptions, i deal with salvage all day long at work.

if yer happy then so be it, always worth buyin if its for the long term, just don't load it up with mods and expect yer money back, especially in this current market.

enjoy, get a new key though, damm nightmare whrn the wife goes to work with it in her bag!:S

Its worth a mention that some Insurance companys dislike Cat C and D wright off's. I myself work in a bodyshop and as you can imagine we put some heavily damaged cars back on the road. I was looking for a CAT D 172/182 but my insurance would not cover me. I'm with greenlight insurance.

and i bought a straight ph1 for 1k :)

  ZX6R B1H
not really contradicting anything, Just stateing that Greenlight insurance refused to insure me on a car which was listed as a Cat D. So its worth checking out before hand as i already had a policy with them. Thats If the arrow was aimed what i said :D

Not at all mate, I have no doubt you have to fix some shockers. Just you saying that you put some right messes back on the road and other people saying that CatD can be barely anything.

Just a cautionary comment, tis all. :)

well I would only buy one if I knew what it looked like before repair or could look into what happened e.g. on here. But cat d could be for so little - my mtae bought a Saab 93 2.3 turbo viggen for £2500 cat d because of a dented rear quarter, dented tail gate, broken back bumper and split rear spoiler. £5k car half price and he's spent £800 tidying it and its immaculate.

my 1st 172 was 02 plate i paid £1850 from a dads mate salvage, crap was a understatment, 32k , had to replace gearbox, driveshaft, c/c didnt work auto light/wipers didnt work, one key no history and all this was so called repaired !!! i wanted it tho cos it was a renaultsport !! i learned the hard way .. luckly i sold it on ebay 9 months later for 2k !!
i now have a decent hpi clear 52 plate 172 that i bought 5th jan, everything works i have 2 keys all reciepts/mots etc frsh, both belts done, it drives so much better and its immaculate 2 owners from new . all for a bargain price of £2,800 !
good luck n fingers crossed i learned the true expense of owning a salvage.
i can drive mine knowing everything is in place and hasnt been taken to bits ! and that assures me when im driving at higher speeds !!

ahhh gotcha :D

I feel some shocking pics of fooked cars are in order pmsl. Just about to finish a Cat C which had the sill two foot into the driver side floor well Pug 206 HDI thing. Nowt special really New door, wing, outter sill, inner sill part section of the inner wing and windscreen pillar windscreen and some other little bits.

That was a cat C A corsa came in which was a cat D was a light front end, Bumper, grill and headlight. The cat D clio i wanted is still on ebay, silver W reg. Needs a bumper repair, wing repair wishbone, strut and a new alloy wheel, Headlight as well as the bracket would of snapped.

  Monaco RS Clio 172
well mine went into a field.. and needs new front bumper, new bonnett, due to some dents and some cracks in the front bumper

altho it isn't any mechnical or structural damage I doubt the insurance would of fixed it even tho it's only a 500 quid repair.. they tend to wanna cat d anything

doing it private anyhow. I plan to keep her til she is well and truely dead. which hopefully will be years and years to come of fun! :)

to the logbook question. i came away with a key, the car and the vehcile registration documents when u hand over to a new owner and you both sign if thats what you mean?

i got the car from a small company specialising in sports cars so seemed pretty legit n all that

  BMW E46 330i Touring
That's right mate. Everyone's asking if you got the logbook, but the buyer shouldn't! The seller will send it off and it'll come back in your name shortly... you may need to 'remind' the garage to send it off though; they tend to drag their heals.

  182 FF
Haha, can of worms like i said.

Write offs are based on their value, and i don't agree with them.

You get a 50k car needing 30+k of work onit, obviously gunna be a real mess, insured repairs it, no record of this on its history:eek:

you have a 3k come in needing a couple of thou spending onit but write it off, in reality the damage was no where near as bad as the expensive car,
Superficial damage really, but not worth the agro to repair.

So you see not all straight cars are perhaps as clean as you think, you'll be amazed how many cars are out there that have seen the paint shop, any one know the annual accident stats?

the corsa i part ex for the clio was in a bump, i had a new bonnet, bumper n headlight and a spray. the woman who hit me paid for it and we never went through the insurance. the car was sound

just incase anyone reads this 7 months later and my car is still sound. still only 51k on clock! belts gonna be done very soon

  172 Phase 1 & 172 Ph
I have just picked up a cat d '01 172, was wrote off because almost all the windows were smashed, door & rear quarter kicked in. So once glass has been replaced, dents sorted it will be as good as new and no worse for being a cat d.....
