5year old 172 getting tired!!!!

My car is 5 years old now and although it's only got 26.5k on the clock it's one job after another.

CV boot, done.
Cambelt needs doing but no one wil take the job on so it looks like main dealers,
Wheel bearing, done.
Exhaust blowing from the down pipe to the cat, taken it a few different places but no one can do anything with it.
And i took it this morn for M.O.T and it's faild because of coilspring broke.

The joys of owning a reno.:(

thats the exact reason i sold mine.

when i sold it i made sure it was mint, everything in perfect working order... i just couldnt see myself spending any more money on it, so traded it.

Everything you've mentioned I've had done, yes it is a pain. But just find a quite country road and give it the beans! Everything will seems worthwhile after that.

exact same as me, new driveshafts new water pump new exhaust (again) new suspension new brakes all round although it passed its mot no bother with a few advisories. and yes no one will touch he cam belt and reno want 500 notes for it.

oh aye and a new wheel bearing yesterday.

  yep.
mines an 02 but luckily nothing has gone wrong in my 18 months of ownership! did the cam/auxbelts when i got it to get them out of the way :)

must be a monday car!

  Audi TT 225
Same as mine, bearings, cracked spring etc had all that go wrong with it too lol
Its at Yozzasport at the minute having a new lease of life pumped into it, cam & accessory belts, full service, new clutch, gearbox rebuild, Ive uprated the exhaust, brakes, getting coilovers soon so the way I see it there wont be much left to go wrong before long LOL

No one buys an RS for its reliability! Same with most cars when they get to this sorta age... shizz goes wrong! Why do you think warranty only covers the first 3 years ahahahaha!!!
In a few years all the 182's will probably be suffering the exact same problems

And i forgot to mention the rattles in the cabin.
More f**kin rattles than mothercare!!:)

Booked in to get the springs done thurs.
the exhaust next, it makes a real rasping noise when you give it some beans between 3.5k-6krevs. But if you rev it at a stand still it dosen't do it, just hope a engine mt hasen't gone and it's pulling the exhaust when you give it some.

True. My 1.2 16v is 6yrs old now and I haven't had any problems with it, except the cd player is on the way out (put a cd in and it doesn't return it for 2 weeks). Having said that the previous owner was an old dear and probably didn't thrash it too much.
I will hopefully be buying a ph 1 172 in the summer, but im starting to think maybe I should just spend abit more money and get a newer RS, far too common though.

I would try to get one around 3years old if i where you mate with less miles as poss.

  53 Clio's & counting
any new car tends to be the same nowadays,i work for vw and the amount of warranty claims we do is unreal, and 80% of mk4 golfs we see are around 5-6 years old now and most need things done, main things are coil springs that break and anti roll bar bushes and clamps,so im my opinion thats basic wear and tear mate, just enjoy it lol

sounds like you got off lightly... in comparison to some others.... least you havent bought a vw and suffered turbo failiure $$$$$$$

  ph1 172...a red one
Mij try Adrian Wilsons in Leek, not too far from you. Cam belt, aux belt, water pump,36k service for a very reasonable £550 ish!!

My 172 is nearly 5 and it's done just under 70K, i've had my cv boots changed, both driveshafts in the last 6 months. Next up is the 72K service.

I'm still really happy with mine though.

  Monaco Blue 172
mine's just started rattling recently :dapprove: i didn't know what people meant about that but now i definitely do. sounds like a wasp is trapped in the air vents! altho with music and aircon running i don't notice ;)

it's an 02 plate and i've had a few problems since acquiring it last July. some self-inflicted (badger-shaped dent in AC condensor), some not (cam dephaser was faulty). now the exhaust is on it's last legs and i'm just waiting for the misery report when it's MOTed...

i figured it was going to be expensive to run but it turns out i really had NO idea. i'm going to invest in a stainless exhaust system next and if the problems don't dry up then i might have to move on to something else :quiet:

  Lotus Elise 111R
I've had mine for 2 and a half years, apart from the exhaust which they replaced before the warranty ran out, I am amazed how cheap this car is to run ! Rattles, yeah, but it ain't no Audi, but no Audi price either, come on guys you can't have it all !!!

As someone said, go for a drive in it and everything is forgotten. 36k service, belts etc due in a couple of months, Rentech for me this time, sick of the wanky dealers who know f*ck all about RS's.

Fantastic Performance, cheap running costs, but bad depreciation....reminds me of my Elise, which incidently is the only car I will swap it for, but going to wait til the winter and pick an Elise up when noone wants it and it is cold, which helps with the depreciation!

For anyone who has'nt done it yet, get yours on a track, that'll show how truly great this car is for the price.

^^^ My boot catch is rattling like a b**ch atm.
Mine too,
no other probs in 3yrs apart from exhaust and tyres.

I went to the scrappies and got a rubber bung from the slam panel of a nissan micra. Put this by the boot catch (in between the bootlid and the base above the bumper).

NO MORE SQUEAKS! Bought myself a pint and patted myself on the back that day.

Next: Sorting the drivers' door rattle

lol i didn't even mention depreciation ;)

i suppose it could be worse. put 23,000 miles on it in 9 months and it's not yet had a serious breakdown (touchwood). as long as i don't have to fork out for a new clutch or anything soon i'll be happy

doesnt sound too bad, 5 years is where the major expense is on every car. hope you get all sorted and continue to enjoy it.
