Pete's budget Ph1 track build

Been on CS for a few years now and started with a titanium 182 which was slightly modded but remained my everyday runner. Then I was seduced by a Liquid Yellow R27 and the 182 went before it was completely finished. Last year my circumstances changed and the 197 had to go to suit my work situation, enter the Panda. Having modded the Panda and took it to Llandow for a damn good track thrashing, realised that I wanted a track car. So the search began for something suitable. After a lucky escape from a right shed on ebay I found the current car on here. Went along to Chichester to look at it and bought it on the spot.

Previous owner had made a few mods to it:

Air con delete
Aluminium bonnet
Lowered driving seat
Eibach sport springs
Aluminium radiator.
Powerflex stainless exhaust

Was a good starting point but came without any service history. So had the cam belt done and a check up mechanically. Still need to sort out the crank sensor problem but currently living with the excitement of not knowing when it is going to start. So will order the new sensor and fit in next week.

Drew up a list of what I wanted to do and spoke with my son about what we are able to do ourselves. Then began the hunting down of the parts to complete the build. Finally managed to get out this week and begin stripping the car. Most of the rear interior was out and today has been spent doing a lot of cleaning and tidying bits on the car.

As in first post strippage started on wednesday night and finished off today and cleaned up the mess under the seats and in the boot.

Rear doorcards inserted

Rear windscreen wiper and motor deleted and covered.

Rear spoiler had been assaulted by sandpaper and had been badly sprayed years ago. So came up with this as a theme idea to make it stand out a little bit on track. I know it's a marmite mod but meh who said you acquire taste with age.

Whilst we were spraying some bits we thought we might as well do the mirrors as well.

Fog lights removed and surrounds colour co-ordinated. Tow sticker added.

Well that's about all we managed today. Tow strap to be put in next week. Hope to finish the interior next weekend.

Cheers Russ its on about 114,000 miles so still running in. My son is going to see if he can order the parts through work but thanks for the offer.

Thanks Eddy, the bung is home made by my son. The whole theme of this project is to do as much of the work as possible on it ourselves.

Although, it is handy to have a son who is a panel beater /paint sprayer and vehicle technician by trade, He loves playing about with cars and has built some cool ones in his time. As he's trying to save up at the moment he wanted a project that kept him in and didn't mean putting in his money. So enter Dad with a tight budget and some ideas for him to bring to fruition. I said he could drive it on a few track days as well. That's if he doesn't go down the drift route with his MX5.

Halfords sell a pack of three. One of them fits perfectly.

Renault replaced mine but I think it's just a case of cutting the two wires to the old connector then soldering on the new loom.

Have you tried cleaning the crank sensor up as that should work as a temporary fix?

Ordered the TDC sensor today (with the loom) through my son's work. Hope to fit it next week. Phoned Larkspeed this morning to chase up my seat subframes. They rang me back later on this morning and said "We've spoken to Corbeau and they are making your frames today and will post them out tomorrow." Didn't think much about this then it hit me. I ordered Cobra subframes :banghead:. So don't expect I'll be putting the cage or seats in this weekend. At least the coilovers and AST top mounts turned up today. Just waiting for the rear strut brace.


Forgot to put new tyres on the list of parts to order, thinking of my favourite Toyo T1Rs as they are reasonably cheap at the moment.

Finally the subframes arrived today and I did a dry fit tonight to make sure that it all went together well.

Not half as high as I thought it would be. Won't be able to fit it all until next weekend after surrey rolling road. Can't wait to complete the interior.

Doubt if it will be going anywhere soon after today. New TDC sensor and loom fitted today and worked fine at the garage, collected it, drove it home and bingo, failed to start, same old problem. Left it for an hour, went back and it started first time. Ran it up to temp, switched it off. Went to re-start it and nothing happened. Left it for an hour and it wouldn't start. Anyone want to buy a non starting half stripped Clio. Oh the joys of Clio ownership. will not be doing anything else to the car until I have sorted this problem out.

Doesn't even crank, it's like the immobiliser cuts in.

Well if it doesn't crank then it wasn't the tdc sensor. Would still turn over with out one. Who told you to change that ffs!

So. Not cranking it won't be tdc sensor or immobliser as it would still turn over just not fire and the led would flash fast. Have a look at the trigger wire connector on the starter motor. They are a shitty push on one and corrode easily

Agree with Jay, check the starter - it has to be something that is causing the starter motor to not physically engage if when you turn the key it does nothing.

It could be the starter is a bit leggy and doesn't like working when it's hot - I have a spare one if needed x

Check its got a heat sheild, could be getting too hot after a drive and then cooling down and working again

Mine came out in a rush when taking out my RB engine. Put it all back together and had it left over :S Then found out what it was for !
