Pete's budget Ph1 track build

It started this morning and drove it to the garage. Got there switched it off and Steve came out. Went to show him what happens and the fcuking thing started first time after an 8 mile drive there. Left it for a couple of minutes and then it started n problem. The only thing that I can think of is that when it doesn't start is after I have reversed it into a parking space. I know this is clutching at straws but the only thing that is a constant about the car not starting is following reversing into a parking space. He will look at the things suggested so far and if all else fails will look at changing the starter motor and connector. On top of it all I've now gone down with severe man flu.

Got a phone call from my new best mate Steve at PCC. Come and get the Clio I can't find anything wrong with it. Got there and he had checked the heat shield on the starter motor and it was there. Cleaned the starter motor connector and then checked the main negative earth strap from the battery to the chassis. This was corroded and rusty so he gave it a good clean up and re- fitted it. Drove the car home the 8 mile journey and parked it up reversing into the drive. Switched it off and went to restart it and........ It started!!! Been to get some petrol and then went for a blast . Got home and it starts up again. I'm not saying anything at the moment. I will be taking the Clio to Surrey Rolling Road now. The interior might get done on Sounday now depending on the weather.

Iv just done a quick fix on a clio with a similar fault.. Got a key reader(Black thing that does around the barrel) from another clio along with a key, removed the chip from the key taped it to the ring, removed the old ring, fitted new ring and that sorted it... Could be worth a try for the sake of like £10 from a scrappy

The ring round the barrel just reads the key and passes the info to the ecu/uch. They will work with any key it is just the uch, key and ecu that are linked together.

I'd be interested if it bump starts when it won't from the key, also what does the red light on the instrument cluster do when it won't start?

Assuming it is the same as on a ph2 anyway.

Well I got the car to Surrey Rolling Road this morning. Those who were there enjoyed the excitement of the non-starting Clio. After a couple of hours the car decided to give in and do what was expected of it. Got it on the Rollers and the result was:=

Pleased with that result considering the problems I've had and definitely encouragement to persevere with sorting this problem out.

Had an afternoon and evening of trouble free motoring. I think the car has a gremlin so If I call it Gizmo will it be the cute one?

For an X plate Pete that looks like a good engine, I'd be suprised if mine hit 150bhp lol. Whats the miles on yours? Mine is about to hit 130,000.

Good result.. My 182 ran 164.7 last time i had it on a RR.. Still need to sort my apparant timing issue though...

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
Fair do's Fletcher was going off the general 'cs' concensous thats seems to be high mileage s**t engine. Might be amending mine soon anyway ;)

Those who actually know, know that the F4R is always better when it has lots of miles under it's belt. As long as it's well looked after and leak free obviously

  Hi comp phase 1
Good to meet you at SRR. It's a shame you've got this problem with the starting but going on your result at least when it has started the engine is in good nick.

Time for a quick update. Attended the Longbridge Mill Meet last night and the usual happened. Thanks everyone for the push start to get the car going to get me home. Car made it home no problems and started again. Have ordered a new starter motor after advice from Chip and Mike. Is going to be done on monday so have put it to the back of the drive until then. If the weather is okay this weekend may try to get the cage and seats in.

Been a day of hard work on the Clio today. Started off at 10.30 am with it looking like this. I had the help of my son for the day and we were determined to do as much as we could. Wanting to finish the interior was a prime goal.

First job of the day was to remove the front seats.

Jakey was loving it and at one point was stood on my son's chest while he was under the car.

Seats out and it was time to put the cage in. This is one of those Alan Dent cages and I have to admit that it went in so easily that we both went in and had a cup of tea in shock that we didn't have to manhandle it in at all. Plates all matched up and before we knew it it was all bolted in without even having to remove the wheels for the rear arches. We left the bubble wrap on it to protect the powdercoating.

As we were making such good progress we decided to press on and fit the bucket seats. We used the Cobra subframes which bolted directly to the underside of the seat frame.

Seats in and all securely bolted in we decided to have a break for lunch. Three hours of work and we had achieved what we set out to do.

We returned and removed the car off the axle stands and spare wheels it had been precariously perched on. Next step was to fit the harnesses. Finally hit a problem with these as the harness eye bolts would not fit into the seat belt mounts on the side of the car. Got around it by bolting them in with washers and original seat belt bolts. Having done that we had already decided that we didn't want to leave the back naked so put some carpet down. As this is meant to be a budget build we decided not to buy the K-Tec boot mat but used acoustic carpet for sub boxes. Glued it to the floor and it follows the contours nicely. I am so glad that I have a son with ADHD who loves doing up cars.

Most normal people would have probably called it a day at this point and gone in cracked open a bottle of beer and put their feet up. Well that's what I wanted to do but Tim had other ideas:-

5gm out of the bumper with holes and he also removed the foam crash pad.

We then decided to update the wheels

They're not black but dark amphasite (lol)

Still not finished decided to do some more colour coding

Finally we fitted this, having to file out the holes for half an hour to accomodate the bolt

At this point that was the time to call it a day. I am feeling absolutely knackered but so satisfiedand proud of what we achieved. Thanks Tim you were a legend today.

Looks great Pete, all in a day too. Done Well. You need to pop up and see my motorsport mancave soon. Both Fletcher and Chris have been and drank my tea.

Quick update. Had the starter motor changed for a new one. Picked it up, drove it twice and now it won't start at all. Starts with a bump. RAC reckon its the wiring loom to the starter motor as battery is good and everything else checks out. Will bump start it and try to get it down to Mike at Rentechs this week. Frustrated is not the right phrase to say how I feel at the moment. But hey ho french electrics are a wonderful thing. Good job its not my daily.

You have not hung around with this pete.

Looks good so far, just a shame about the starting issue. Hope you get it sorted.

Fingers crossed Pete, I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say I hope it gets fixed once and for all (and isn't too expensive either).

Realised that I have not updated this for some time. Car has been starting with no problems for a few weeks now. Have been putting a few miles on it and it has really benefitted from regular runs. Had put off doing anything else to the car or throwing any more money at it until I had confidence in its reliability. This weekend gave it a good clean and even thought of giving it a full detail but it was too cold. Did decide to do something about the side bump strips. So persuaded my son to have a go.

Results were:

Things to do before Combe in 4 weeks time

Four new tyres
Fit coilovers
Fit AST top mounts
Fit new engine mount
Fit discs and pads all round
Suspension geometry set up

Yea not bad for Fiat Grigio steel but apparently it's the paint code that's important. Tim had his done at Regal and they did a great job, so will be hoping to get it in once suspension is done.
