A few 172 Cup Questions.

  Clio 172 Cup
I've had the car less than a week so I'm just just trying to find my feet at the moment. I've come from a modified Impreza and I've got to say I'm mightily impressed with little blue fella.

Apologies if these have been done to death but I have had a quick search and didn't find what I need. I'll think of more I'm sure but for now...

1. On a constant throttle when cold the car surges until it's warmed. Some Imprezas do this on closed loop and it's nothing to worry about. Does the same apply to the Clio?

2. My Cup is running with a K-tec sports cat. and Super Stealth. The cat. seems to sit extremely low. Normal?

3. I used to travel from Bucks to Powerstation in Cheltenham to get my geometry done on my Impreza. My Cup is running FK adjustable coilovers and I'll probably take it down there for the fellas to give it a once over and really go over the set up. Where do people on here tend to get their geometry work done on here?
I also had the bumpsteer removed from my Impreza. Is that a common modification on these and are thy as sensitive to geometry changes as the Impreza is?

Thanks.

Think you bought this off a mate of mine as its sounds like his. Get it from Elmswell, Suffolk?

1. Constant throttle isn't really great for a cold car. The car has a cold start map on it too, preventing from over revving when cold.

2. I thought he'd fixed this, but possibly the exhaust mounts just need adjusting, or rear ones are notorious for failing.

3. Powerstation are a repectable company from what I read on here. I'd leave the suspension as is TBH!

Hi Danny. I bought it from Ben in Elmswell last Saturday. He seems a really good guy.

I'm going to keep the numbered points going as it's easy for now.

1. What do you mean by constant throttle not being great? Having come from a Turbo I am a total fairy in terms of warming (and cooling) oils. All I am referring to is say, travelling in traffic at a steady 30mph. Speed rises and falls the tiniest amount.

2. Ben did have the exhaust looked over and it is apparently as high as it will go. I'm just checking on here as forums can turn up fantastic advice at times.

3. I've got no paperwork for the suspension work and therefore haven't a clue if the geometry is anywhere near right. Can't hurt to make sure.

Thanks for the reply.

Yea he's a good lad, just didn't get on with the Clio, think it was a little raw for him being a cup!

1. As standard the Clio's run quite lumpy when cold, a remap can sort this out I think.

2. I'd check all the mounts and how its all connected up to the decat and manifold, slight twist will put it out.

3. I never got the chance to drive it, but your right, wouldn't hurt to get it checked!

As above, the cold idle is a known issue. Regarding suspension, I didn't really get on with powerstation, but others did, so up to you. They are Subaru specialists, and have buckets of experience with them, personally I'd go to a clio specialist. Mark Fish etc.

This is what I need to learn - who the decent Clio specialists are.

It's not the cat that sits low on the ktec stealth, it's the centre section. The cat is on the back of the engine.

Mark Fish is good by reputation. Yozzasport are also good. BTM are good, but I don't think Fred has suspension setup ready yet.

Im running FK konigsports on my Cup. Had the set up done by curtis at powerstation along with having ast top mounts fitted. . Wasnt dissapointed. Been using powerstation for years. Curtis has done loads of clio setups.

tbf it will be the stealth. Imo they dont fit too well. The one i had removed from my car was hanging like a free swinging sack........

1. Yep, mine's done that right from the beginning. You just have to drive around it until it decides it's warm enough and starts behaving.

2. Probably not, mine's a Yozzasport decat and it sits up nicely.

3. Can't comment, now on my 3rd set of standard springs/dampers.

:D

No, it's not the Stealth. I've got no complaints at all about that. As said, the centre section just sits very low.

Ok, I've stalled the thing twice now in a week. Don't think I managed that in 7 years of Impreza ownership.

Are Cups snatchy off the line or is it just mine...or is it just me?:S:D

All fly by wire clio's seem to need more revs than you expect to get moving. After 5yrs I've never got used to it.

lost track of the number of times i've stalled now! normally have a hill start first thing, which doesnt really help the situation!
