Ive done some more today, i cut the rest of the scuttle panel/bulkhead off as it was going to be replaced.

I started on the strut brace. I decided to make my own and have it fixed into position.

And finally i got the other side panel in place. Both sides need more work but we ran out of gas and just stuck some etch primer on to keep it nice.

Thats today's lot.

just a little done today. mostly cleaning a cutting didnt have much time so not much done plus the area i was doing required more time as the inner arch is in a worse way.

I tidied the bottom of the bulkhead there was a lot of seam sealer here so took a while. also the bit the wishbone attaches to was reet filthy. didn't get a pic of the bits i cut away from the inner arch but im thinking i may chop aload out as replacing it wont be too hard and better to be safe than sorry.

heres a slightly better picture of the strut brace, . i was worried the servo wouldnt come off if everything was welded in yesterday i didn't check before wrapping the front end up for the night, thankfully it does lol.

The plan is to weld it on Tuesday when my welder brings his higher powered welder round. His smaller welder wouldn't quite be up to the task. When its welded ill shape the L shaped bracket holding the brace on. It looks a bit crap atm but bare with it. Also the plan is to make some new sections up for the bulkhead and possibly tie it in with the brace so its all together. the hole was cut for the bodies and air but the bodies are no where near the bulkhead and there's a wiper motor in the way so cant see it doing anything. ill probably opt for a subtle bonnet scoop or something more direct.

A little more to add, took the primer back and added some kurust. i think when ive got all the original paint under seal and rust off ill take the whole bay back and kurust the lot and then stick fresh primer and paint on.

Im probably going abit ott with the boring pics but its a good record of things done. more work will be done tuesday.

cheers guys, means alot.

another update, didn't get to do much today the poor weather isnt good for working with bare metal and it puts a downer on things. i should be out doing more but the weather and seeing rust is taking away any enthusiasm i had to work on it. i really need to get in in a garage.

started off inside the wheel arch, still much more to do here.

didnt do anything else as my welding guy had to go plus he had forgotten his welding mask lol.

Another day off means more time spent on the rallye. Today was a day we could make a decent amount of progress decent weather and a early start.

We started off with the strut tower plates as we had everything measured up and got stuff to fit so we could crack on welding stuff in.
D0F31B94-8A11-43EA-ACBA-EBA8119CCE32-2326-0000015E9C873EBD.webp

EA5913FB-0426-4501-A29D-93BCC88668A4-2326-0000015EAC283FF6.webp

With the plates on we welded the end tabs to the strut tube and shape it to the profile of the tube/weld then we added a triangular piece to neaten it up
68B4F128-0F15-47C3-ADFD-B48380BFF6E0-2326-0000015EB2821C93.webp

That then ended up looking like this, much better.
C9919424-0F09-4A65-8A2A-D100B322EB64-2326-0000015EB90987A4.webp

Then it was onto the scuttle panel this was 4 pieces shaped and tacked to the shell and stitch welded to the brace like the rest of the bay.
6E8CDBFE-A0ED-4E38-99C1-D7AC370617AE-2326-0000015EC03A9B1A.webp

Looking at this image the two pieces don't sit level actually didn't notice this in real life so could just be the image.
97142C9E-3F33-4462-8D2C-8F5B6362FCE4-2326-0000015EDD010708.webp

We also cut and welded in the braces for the aero catch fixing. it feels rigid enough but may add something onto them to reinforce them. You can see them in the back of these two pictures.

More was done the gearbox mount was made and almost ready to weld in and more was done under arches but unfortunately half hour before we was due to pack up his welder broke and needed a strip down so we had to leave that until another day.

Just a little update before Thursday if the weathers good ill have a full day on the car finally.

ive started using zinc 182 primer its rust proof so i don't need a top coat for it to stop rust developing perfect for what i need. i did the passenger front arch to see how it fared and a few days on its done as it said, no rust. The etch i was using was useless.

I took the whole arch back to bare metal kurusted it and gave it a quick layer of zinc 182.
4FD069C7-365D-48FD-9430-E1F5814D9DD3-3053-0000029D25F32B46.webp

I then added some seam sealer, there was nothing but nice fresh metal behind the original seam sealer so hopefully it'll keep my arches nice and fresh. to be fare i didn't make the best of jobs with it but it doesn't need to be pretty under here.
655729BB-02E5-439F-AEE7-E31E92ADE60C-3053-0000029D33B6AE2C.webp

Then a few more layers of primer, a hole can in fact i really layered it on.

I've been umming and arring about the radiator panel for a few weeks now but decided its an easy job and it wouldn't be too hard to replace. plus its slightly bent so it had to go.

In the pics it looks ok but in person it isn't too good.
F2EDE7AD-37D5-4BA8-9B8B-158E831C9624-3053-0000029CE16B7701.webp

So i got some more tubular metal the guy now asks how my builds going as ive been there so much lol he hasn't got a clue what im talking about when i tell him but he seems to try and understand lol.

Using some scraps of box section from the spit i made and shaped a couple of tabs, ill add a couple more for the oil cooler.

Hi fella, Does that lower brace bolt on to car using the front lower arm joints?

It does indeed mate yeah. It's part of a really impressive front suspension re design but you can buy it separately.

You got any links?. The build you are doing is awesome by the way fella. I am keeping a close eye on this.

Cheers mate.

Another update, more on the front end done today, i think *fingers crossed* that's the front end done in terms of new bits and welding. yayyy. its just a matter of the rear passenger side arch being done now.

Firstly i made some 3mm plates up for the jacking points to add some strength, tricky to get a decent weld when the original jacking points where not quite flat. it isn't pretty but its more than up to the job.
9EEBA6DC-2EF8-4D77-BB52-33EF13A7E168-4810-00000442C7C5F052.webp

I didn't really do any step by step pics today but here's a better pic of the radiator mount as standard, the pics don't seem to show its true ugliness.

that was most of the day to tidy them bits up we went over a few bits and changed our minds a couple times plus running out of gas meant it was a long day.

Haha cheers. Definatly a handly little purchase. I think I may go mad with it tho the car will look like a cheese grater

More engine bay bare metal then primered pics....

With the welding all done it was a case of taking the lot back to bare metal cleaning what little bits i had missed a little bit of filler work some seam sealer and primer but this time with zinc 182.
i felt like i had made good progress but it turned dark very quick and i could tell it was going to try and rain so i didn't sand back the filler i just coated on top of it for another day. i also covered some of the welds with car body sealant out of a tube i didn't like it at all applying it was hard it didn't stay where i wanted it and just looked crap. ill get some pics when i next work on the car. ill be taking it off and just using seam sealer as i seem to be getting better at applying it. bit gutted as i wanted it done today so i can sort the back end out.

Took it back to bare metal

I didn't get any detailed pics as its starting to bore me now. at least sanding filler down and re applying seam sealer will only take a hour or so.

Oh and treated my daily to a clean for the second time since i bought it. New oil, coolant, washer fluid and sorted a loose lower mount means its now quite a nice drive again. Not far off from reaching 49k aswell so nice low mileage.

a little update the longer i go on with this the more im fed up of not having a car to drive mainly due to a mate posting vids up every week of the track days hes doing.

i had a week off work so a little more work done, far to cold to make any real progress. and seeing bits ive done needing more work (teeny rust spots in two areas) means its all getting extremely repetitive. and i have to ask the question am i going to get the job i want doing with the shell done on the drive in the winter with no cover.

anyway a few bits i wanted doing to the cage firstly this.
null-8.webp

and the doors needed a x
null-5.webp

null-6.webp

null.webp

made some fancy bits up, im unsure if ill use these. there obviously just placed there atm

null-10.webp

null-9.webp

i also added some extra bits to the back of the cage the bits used here are from my old omp cage in a old clio. again it isnt perfect theyll need lining up properly.
null-7.webp

i was going to add these bits in but it looked really tight on the steering wheel so i wont bother.
null-1.webp

i then started to look at the rear arch pretty much the only place on the shell i expected a easy ride. just my look i found some rust.
null-12.webp

yayyy.

seriously fed up....

Good work on this still mate, stick with it! I know the feeling mine needs loads of work (Not on rust) but things like rear beam etc etc...

A dash bar is something I've thought about a few times. Would be nice to get rid of the steering column support and have it mounted to the dash bar.

a little update the longer i go on with this the more im fed up of not having a car to drive mainly due to a mate posting vids up every week of the track days hes doing.

You're welcome ;)

Seriously though, it'll be worth it! I would offer to help but obviously a bit far away...

hahahaha this is all your fault and the fact i had the most fun on track in a 900 quid 1.3 106 doesnt help

Interesting, cos my MX-5 was £900 too, and that was my 'most fun' track day too...

A little update for the new year, it feels like its been ages since i last touched it. luckily before leaving it last i got a car cover off ebay exactly the same as what halfords sell but for 20 quid.
Bargain
null-28.webp

Then christmas came and id asked for some gloves for when the time comes to drive the thing lol
null-29.webp

First thing i got cracking with was the satchshift mod i wanted to do when the shell was previously painted.
Big hole
null-20.webp

It fits
null-21.webp

Holes plugged, welded in and grinded back
null-26.webp

Then i had the door bars welded in on both sides
null-25.webp

null-23.webp

Cross bar welded in
null-24.webp

Id also made a start on the rear diagonal bar that has been tacked in it just needs fully welding in. also the bad rear arch id started on just need a few more bits making up and welding in.

Well its been a while since my last update due to me fracturing my ankle in two places and snapping two tendons playing football. anyone who has been in cast or currently is i feel your pain.Another reason for lack of updates is ive moved in with the mrs chuffed to bits with the house and the important bit is the garage. its quite big especially for a new build house.
theres probably going to be too many pictures of the garage but i dont care it makes me tingle inside lol.
null_zpse86e261a.webp

Crammed it with alot of s**t, hard to figure out where id put the rallye with all this lot
null_zps0ab9c293.webp

To aid with the storage problem i avoided curtain shopping and went and bought some clarke shelving, the bench was from work and is pretty damn solid.
null_zpsba395495.webp

My dad gave me some plastic underlay to protect the floor from oil etc.
null_zpsb9012169.webp

Luckily i managed to get hold of some carpet, proper plush stuff this carpet i got it from a very wealthy family so the garage has better carpet than my house.
null_zps6ccedaa9.webp

Ive now got the majority of the stuff in i still need to do alot of sorting stuff out and probably another shelving unit.
null_zps987a7113.webp

So with the rallye on the spit it needed to be sorted for transporting to the new place. i needed a dolly, so i got some metal and gave my welder a tinkle. my mate sorted me some castor wheels out so making this lot has cost 45 quid all in.
These where the rears mounting points made up
null_zps2e38f1a5.webp

These where the fronts, also made tabs for where the wishbones mount
null_zps7b36fb30.webp

This is obviously the rear made up
null_zps0f18a33e.webp

null_zps6712f75d.webp

null_zpsce789e20.webp

And then the front
null_zpsf77810a3.webp

null_zps64a93d43.webp

null_zps2858f083.webp

It feels solid as a rock
null_zps0525087b.webp

null_zps1bfd0439.webp

And finally got a gearbox on a stand ready to paint etc
null_zps2cba6ed0.webp

I also bought my engine over tonight just need to get in on the stand. thats about it for now hopefully ill be able to get the shell over soon and properly crack on with it.

Yesterday i managed to get a trailer sorted to get the shell to its new home. the trailer looked massive but with the sides up it was soon filled up.
null_zps374072ea.webp

Got it all strapped up and on the move
null_zps264f741c.webp

After some horrendous weather we got it home and i bolted the casters on.
null_zps18d76fca.webp

To make life easier working on it in the garage i whipped the doors off.
null_zps2062e243.webp

Gladly the shell moves about easily, chuffed to bits with the dolly.
null_zps9b048206.webp

It all fits away in the garage perfectly its not the biggest garage but i can move about in there easy enough with the shell in so i couldn't really ask for much more.
