A Subtle, Upgrade and Necessary Mod

My Driver side washer was broken when I bought the car - common fault.

It was the first thing I said I'd fix so naturally it's 10 months later and I just haven't got round to it.

So that's the smaller, wider Renault Sport Megane Washers fitted. They seem to mist nicely and are fractionally neater than the standard 172 ones

Also I hear these will be compulsory to pass an MOT if you have Xenons as of 2012?

Yeh they are smaller, I'll get the part number later today. Were pricey for what they are though (classic stealer) £12 each

I'd imagine the Clio 2 ones are on stilts to make sure the water cleans the lens and not just spray the bumper when you're travelling at any kind of pace.

Of course, the "any kind of pace bit" wont be easy to test on MOT, so just hitting the lens at all will probably work

Whenever you use your washer jets, the headlight washers fire too.

Ah a sceptic I was slightly sceptical and also took the attitude that "if they're there and they spray - they'll pass an MOT"

However they work great. If you have ever removed the washers they have a little locating nipple on the washer and in the hole. These megane ones have that too. Also they aim lower so I'd imagine they'd actually get more effective at speed, as the airflow forces the water over the light. They also clean the light perfectly when the car is static.

Who needs washers to clean their lights anyway? such a trivial piece when you think about it

Prepare to fail the next MOT, my local MOT centre has already told a mate of mine with electrical retracting washers (that dont work) that he'll need to sort them by the MOT as they are soon to be an MOT fail on cars with xenons!

I wondered this too. So after a bit of research I can conclude it is down to defracted light. Dirt on the headlight causes the light to diffract and bounce in different directions. As xenons are bloody bright its deemed dangerous to bounce a load of light around the place as it may distract or blind other drivers. Water lifts the dirt and in theory it should just pour down the headlight and this apparently solves the problem, everyone's happy and the world is a better place.

So you're right - it's hard to see why they exist let alone a legal requirement. This, and the UK are one of the last remaining countries in Europe where it isn't a legal requirement already! The world is a mad place.
