A tow rope disaster

  Renault Clio 1.2
Basically, yesterday, went to pick up the suede that my mum (professional upholsterer) is going to cover the fabric parts of my door cards with. Get into my car after about 10 minutes in the shop. Turn the key... nothing, f**k all. So i leave it a minute, and try again, and same result. So i call my dad, who has a laguna estate. He came down with jump leads, but they wouldn't work. This tells me its probs not the battery, and that its the start motor. (there is a small click when the key is turned)

So, the best thing to do is to tow me home. So i screw the tow hook on the front of my car in and the same to my dads back, and put the rope on. We set off and get to a junction. As my dad pulls away, the hook screwed into my car, is ripped out and the thread is buggered.

So we look under the bonnet, and manage to attach the rope to part of the chassis. And off we go; then going down a hill, i begin to brake. The rope goes slack, so i let my foot off the brake. I then brake again, and the rope goes slack, and the rope goes under the wheel of my car, and its shredded in half. My dads goes to pull away again, and my car is left standing (obviously). Anyway, i put a trusty old boy scout reef knot in the rope, and finally we got home. Got my car booked in for tomorrow at 9am.

Do you think its the starter motor, or worse.

Any help/similar problems/situations would be great. Cheers Ollie

If the battery is completely dead, jumping will not always sort it. I've tried that before and failed but when it's done with a jump kit it was fine.

That's what I'm saying, if it's totally flat jumps leads may not do anything, however, a jump kit may.

Should have tried a tow start, unless it's an auto. And ALWAYS keep the rope taut when towing!!

oh right i see, a jump kit. Cool cheers. Not as easy as it sounds keeping the rope taught, with no engine running i had now power steering, and fack all brakes.

I had to be towed after a week of driving, off the motorway no less lol cam belt had snapped :( no brakes and no steering is scary, also ran over the tow rope  so easily done.

  Shhh
The click means that the battery was flat.

Can mean anything, alternator, battery etc..

i go with alternator and battery change.
