About To Purchase A Clio 182... Advice??



Hi guys,

New to the forum and this is my first post. Was hoping for abit of advice and guidance to how much I should be spending on a clio 182.

Anyways, I am interested in getting a run about for the weekends/ evenings (shopping, seeing family and weekends away etc) as I have a company van for work.

Firstly I'd like to say I have no clue on the difference between the 172 and 182. But I like the look of the 182. Can anyone offer me advice on what I should look out for when viewing one.

I have found a 182 local to myself.. advertised for around £1600. Does that seem in the right ball park?

The most important point is if the cambelt change is done on time, and by a specialist who knows what they're doing. Everything else is standard car-buying common sense.

The key difference that is visible between 172 and 182 is the exhausts. 172 back boxes disintegrate quickly, but you get a spare wheel. Most people end up sapping 172 backboxes for something else anyway. The power differences are actually minimal between both cars.

If you see a 172/182 with all-cloth seats, that's a "cup", and is supposedly very very slightly better on track. The real world difference is that the interior of the car is made out of old plastic bags.

There are many other, finer points.
 
Cambelt is 5yrs / 72k and Aux is 3 years / 36k.

Iirc there were some manuals that said Aux was 5 years (or even 4), I'd go with 3 to be safe. If Aux isnt done it can take out the cambelt and its new engine time. :D

£1600 is pretty good, you're looking at 500-600 quid to get the belts done (It's a specilist job)
If you can pick the car up for 1500, then get the belts done you've got yourself a bit of a bargain.

Check the rest of the car is good, not something silly like CAT C or had loads of terrible halfords mods and you're laughing.

I'm not looking for a track car so I'm happy with the 182. Just a run about so not interested in the cup version.

Prices vary massively at the moment on 182's, I have just sold my 182FF with service history, 94,000 miles, belts done at 70k, care was in excellent condition inside and out for £1850.... as said above, if its tidy and has had the belts etc done, and you can get it for £1500 you seem to have done well.....
 
Absolutely Gutted.. That 182 sold about 2 hours ago. Was Going Up To View It Tonight :( Really Wanted It!!!

Not Willing To Stretch My Budget Too Much Guys... Just In The Process of Buying a House So Trying To Save Abit Of Money.

If you're spending top dollar on one then I'd only be willing to buy it from here and a member that's too well known to sell a dud.

Otherwise just buy a cheap one and have the essential servicing done yourself. There will almost always be niggles on an old car.

They are cheeky b******s.... that car was on for 3995 last night.... they have marked it up a grand !

Referring to the LY on ebay. I did contact him within minutes of it going up, agreed the amount of 3995 then he increased it to 5k saying he misprinted the amount... More like he had a lot of interest. Anyway decided against it. The front bumper is missing its stickers on the grill. Usual signs of respray or bump. Not willing pay 4k and be unsure .

I had similar requirements to you and bought a slightly modified 182 for 2.5k

It still needed some work but selling chavy parts (imo) helps the cost.

If your willing to do some spannering yourself it's a great prospect. Parts are cheap or peanuts for second hand. :)

There is a huge difference in the drive between a well setup refreshed one and a tired one so keep that in mind.

To be honest it depends if you want a nice one or not really.

I got my BG 182 for over 3k, but it does have the factory fitted recaros. Haven't had a problem with it in a year of ownership either. I've spent on it because I wanted to, that doesn't count though.

Don't budget too low, you'll get a lovely 182 for 3 grand.

£3k should see you getting into a decent one. make sure you check it out thoroughly. I have had 4 and none of those have had anything major go wrong.

Get yourself in the 'For Sale' section on here mate, should see you with a decent one for not much money. My best bit of advice would be that there are plenty about so don't jump into the first one you see.

You referring to the 55 plate BG ? Was tempted too tho belts are due, scrape on bumper, missing arch liners... From history of owning few Clio sports, usually a reason they not on the car. Few other niggles on it from what I recall, but gut said keep clear. Plenty of cheap ones about and plenty tidy ones too.
