ABS & Brakes

ok just recently i have noticed that when i start out and the disks etc are cold when applying my foor to the brake a little harder than normal it kind of very feintly vibrates the pedal like the abs is kicking in, i need new disks but they aren't warped or anything just low.

any ideas if this is the problem or is it just because they are cold or what? never had it before i had an abs ring changed on the driveshaft, could this be the cause as its now more sensitive?

It may be the case that the ABS ring changed doesnt have the same number of teeth as the original. I would replace the disks first as they sound like they need changing then see if the problem remains.
If there is an ABS problem the ABS light should flicker when its happening - but this always doesnt happen

I've noticed this recently, occasionally when I put my foot on the brake, even at slow speed, it feels like there is a bit of metal juddering very slightly beneath the brake pedal so I took it in the garage a couple of days ago and the mechanic looked underneath the car and said it's pretty common with all vehicles (and he said he can't blame Renault as he often does) and (I've forgotten the technical details... as usual) but he said the ABS ring is broken because of something to do with the rusty CV joint.

He did a squiggly drawing explaining to me about teeth and something else and he is going to see if he can get me just a ring and replace it otherwise he may have to get a new CV joint. He has just done a similar thing to a Freelander and had to get the whole driveshaft and it cost about £350 and I hope mine won't cost that.

I think it's time to get a different car but at least I've had a new timing belt and new discs and pads and a few more new things that a buyer wouldn't need to sort.

Has anybody else had this ABS ring problem and how was it resolved? Did the original poster of this topic get it sorted? Where are the Renault techies when I need them? Jay 172 and Bob RTE, where are you?!

Yep its quite common the rings can be bought seperate I'm sure.

The ABS rings employ a device known as a hall effect transistor.

Basically its a switch operated by the presence of metal. the ring is a series of gaps between lumps of metal. so the action of turning the ring causes a pulse to be generated by the transistor and this is used by the ABS ECU to calculate the speed of each wheel, separately.

If dirt, particularly brake dust which has a metallic content, builds up in the gaps, it can cause false speed signals. Corrosion build up has the same effect.

So one possible solution is to clean the rings up with a wire brush and some brake cleaner.
Its quite easy on the rears of a Clio but less so on the front.

Make sure the transistor housing is clean also.

I posted on a similar topic that Renault say I have to get a new driveshaft as they don't supply just the ring and it will be around £160. Maybe Jay172 can verify this!!

hi only just seen this, sorry for my late reply.

it hasn't done the juddering for ages now, but i am having a original renault driveshaft fitted next month as the cowboy who fitted my other one is not excepting responsibility that it is bent.

hopefully once it's been replaced with an oem part it will solve my virbrations when accelerating and also the juddering effect.

for a new oe driveshaft i was quoted approx £150 so your figure sounds about spot on

oh and i was also told you cant buy the ring seperately by the garages but i have spoken to people on here saying you can lol, so confused!? yes!

I was told yesterday that you can't just get the ring!!!
I suspect the people on here only THINK they can get it separately!!

yeah lol, two garages told me they thought you couldnt get it seperate, but then a renualt specialist said they weren't sure but thought you may be able to. just ask around mate.
