Advice on tools for dephaser + cambelt. 172

Ok, first off please don't shoot me but I want to carry out a dephaser change along with the obligatory cambelt, aux belt and water pump change (plus idlers/tensioner etc). My PH2 172 literally 'owes' me approx £500 and the prices I've been quoted to do this are....well......ridiculous (by ridiculous I mean Renault wanted £900 labour alone) so as you can appreciate it's too steep. In the interest of personal wisdom and that awesome feeling you get when you successfully complete an expensive job yourself, I want to do the job myself. Got all the time in the world as it's my second car. I've got the guide from the guides section (£12 membership already paid itself and the welcome pack isn't even here :D) and would ask if someone could scrutinize and advise on my tool choice:

All in, I could do this job for a smidge over £300 that's the tools above listed along with genuine dephaser, genuine aux belt/tensioner etc, gates belt kit + water pump.

I'm open to suggestions and links on correct tools etc, or even better if someone were to let me rent them, and I'm more than willing to pay more if needs be for genuine tools.

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

ive just had my car retimed from a garage who used renault tools but still fuked the job up ,m8 get it to one of the specailists on here they are not expensive dansjm just redone my timing,car flys now

No need for specialists.

Yes my engine is out the car but timing isn't hard if your handy with spanners.

It will be tight in the bay but I'll be doing my 172 more than likely.

But that's my Megane engine timed up from a full rebuild.
 
Sorry to hijack your thread, but where do you guys think I can buy a set of geniune tools for changing the cambelt and depasher. I have tried Renault dealers but they will not sell them.

The only advice I can offer is take your time, double check it all, and when you think you've finished, check it again.
The biggest pain was the tensioner for the aux belt. I ended up using a 24" breaker bar with 3/8th drive to get that done.

The job itself isn't actually that bad, you're just very limited on space to work in.

Am I right in thinking the sprocket tools main purpose is to take the tension off the shafts so you can undo the pulleys, and then lock it back in place to tighten up/tension the sprockets? Also one last query is, when removing the knackered dephaser, make sure the TDC pin is located and the rear 'horseshoe' tool is in place, remove the sprocket tool, remove said dephaser, fit new then refit sprocket tool ready for tensioning?

Make sure the TDC pin is in.
There's a little viewing window on top of the gearbox, it will show you when the crank is at TDC. (you'll see this in the guide)
The horseshoe should be in. The ends of the cams have slots in. You'll notice the slots aren't central, they should be below centre when the horseshoe goes in.
(the guide will confirm this)
The sprocket tool is to take load off the horseshoe when it comes to hoofing the pulleys on/off.
If you try it without the sprocket tool, expect to bend the horseshoe and thus, f**k your timing.

Other than that, sounds like you've got it sussed.
a trick I picked up on here (from one of the specialists) once you've replaced everything, but before the pulleys are tight, spin the belt over 3 times by hand backwards. This sorts the tension out and stops the timing changing itself once everything is re-assembled and settled.
Not doing this will probably put your inlet timing out by about 1/2 a tooth.

Ok thanks that makes it clearer. One last thing, are there any specific tools for setting the tension on the belt?

I didn't use any specialist tools, the tensioner is sprung on a snail cam, and there's a little groove in the block that lines up with the back of the tensioner, just slot it in and wind in on lol

Yup I didn't realize the home made tool in the guide is a 90mm jubilee clip! Haha, ghetto but seems effective.
