as good as fubar'd!

what are my options?

Garage reckon cheapest / easiest fix is new engine and hope for the best
I want to sell the car soon anyways

Should I go for replacement engine and sell it?

or is it worth selling with a broken engine?

strip it for parts?

Help please?

Worst part is, I had the belts done 3 weeks ago :/

+ lambda sensor
+ TDC sensor

so it already owes me £900+

the rest of the car is tidy bar some paint missing on the front bumper above the number plate and some flaking along the edge of the lower grill

i just don't feel I will get back close to what I put in to it?

you said you had the belts done 3 weeks ago. who did the belts a renault specialist or local garage? imo it looks like timing has slipped and possible caused the damage

My money is on poor cambelt job. You can see marks on the pistons where the valves have made contact.

Was it particularly Tappy after the change after 1500rpm? Like an old fiesta?

Options are break it for bits and suck the mop

or

put a engine in and sell it and suck the mop

personally weigh up what it owes you, what you'll get in bits, and what you will get sold with engine and see which is best

It was a local garage but the guy who did the work has been working on renaultsports for 15+ years, drives an R26 himself, I've had a Renault technician out to confirm its not the timing for peace of mind

the car has been using quite a bit of oil lately and running hotter than it probably should, I checked / topped up oil regularly to be safe, from what we can all tell, it was low on oil and just had enough

I was considering an engine swap (meg 225) for a while but wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the Clio so kept putting it off.. Now this :/

the cars been running sweet as a nut, no problems at all since I had the work done, drove fine for 350 miles on Sunday, 120 miles Monday, went kaput 30 miles in to a journey Tuesday (my bloody birthday!) I don't think anyone could foresee this happening, I wouldn't have spent the best part of a grand on it over the last 3 weeks!

Belt done 3 weeks ago £££, i would cry.

Most helpful post. Evar! :(

i do feel cutting my losses and breaking it or selling as non runner is best, just don't want to throw more cash at it :(

loved the car for the last 18 months and all it's done is upset and disappoint me lately!

Cut your losses, once you've got rid I'm sure it would be a big weight of your shoulders.

You contradict yourself there dude..
Tbh why would you spend the guts of 1k on the motor on belts etc when it obviously had an issue that you didnt seem to diagnose and fix ??

I was working on it, The belts were 10k over due, I figured it was more of a priority.. It wasn't burning 'a lot' of oil.. Just more than I was expecting / more than I realised on this particular day!

i didn't have enough money to do everything at once, so I started with the highest priority (or what seemed to be at the time)

i get its probably my fault it's broken, I barely slept coz im upset/annoyed/disappointed I'm just looking for an option to go to now!

No, of course now that you have had a valve fail you wont get back what you put into it, much like if you buy a mirror and drop it you wont be able to sell the pieces for what the mirror was worth.

No good thinking at all about what you have spent previously as that is now in the past and gone forever, just have to decide where to go from here.

Personally I wouldnt repair that unless you bore it and fit new pistons as I would expect there to be damage to the bores with that amount of contact, so its a case of break the car, or source another engine for it.

The valve cutouts on the piston adjacent to the cylinder with the failure do look to be shiney, which implies contact.

That said of course, the timing slipping could be a result of the valve failing, as it puts additional load on the pulley when the other valve gets whacked by a part of the failed one getting pushed up by the piston, so I would say its hard to be definitive its the timing, although like you say if it was rattling from the contact as soon as the dephasor became active then it would certainly imply that was the case, very little chance of proving it now though of course!

As chip says, a bit hard to prove..... But I'd say the contact in the other bores is more than likely consequential damage from dropping the valve in the first place, quite a common problem for valves to snap on these engines. Especially if its been revved hard when cold.

Do you have time / space / inclanation to deal with (some) idiots to make it worth breaking? The dismantling is the quick and easy bit. Don't underestimate the time required to communicate with people, pack and send parts.

If you don't want to go down the route of an engine replacement, then breaking it would bring more money back that way opposed to the option of just cutting your losses and selling as is. You just have to weigh up selling it for X and moving on as is with no hassle whatsoever, to making a bit more over a potentially lengthy period. Is the effort worth a few hundred more basically.

Just seen this mate, gutted for you. She was looking lovely at last weeks meet.

She ran sweet as all day, faultless!

I'm frustrated more than upset, back to standard starts Thursday..

fingers crossed I get some interest as a standard non-runner!
