air con and pas removal ph1 172

  corsa ecoflex
So myself and jamesstone are thinking of ditching the air con and pas on both our ph1's..is this a fairly staright foward job to do..we are both quite good with the old spanners and are up for the work...
on the pas side what steering rack would we use..could we use one from a 1.2 ph1???

With regards to loosing power steering!
Renault clio DCi steering rack that incorporates the electric steering is part number 7711135465 priced at £160.81 + vat, that should come with track rod ends.

Because of the modification a renault drive belt is not available, so you need a 6 ribbed belt 6PK838.

here ya go

Nice one franx, take it i could pick up a second hand unit from a scappy.. got any tips for this as i havent found as much info as i would like before proceeding.. also the local scrappy near me & ivan has loads of the 1.2 8v PH1, would the non power steering in those fit in? & with regards to the alt belt would we just use the R5 mounting bracket - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=371458&page=2 - post 26, then i can still use the original alt right?

Also you will need a clio cup alternator bracket and alternator.

this info was all send to me by Andy from Birchdown, really helpfull thanks Andy!

I have decided not to go on with it (yet) so ca'nt help you with more details.. maybe you can contact them as they have done a few.
the 1.2 racks will be too weak i'm guessing, or the amount of turns from full lock left to full lock right will be different; The dci one will keep this the same as it used to

It's my car (ph1 172 too) that Kev (Andy) at Birchdown has recently ditched the air con & PAS on...

We followed Mike @ Rentech & MarkCup's lead in going for the DCi rack (minus electric column - so effectively a 'manual' rack) as it is understood to have the same number of turns lock to lock as the 1*2 racks...

This may be the same with 1.2 etc racks but we didn't want to have to change it again if it was wrong...

And, the DCi rack was only £57+VAT on an exchange basis! Plus c. £30 for rack ends... Done! ;)

Can't wait to go for a drive to feel the difference now!

So i will have to get hold of a cup alt aswell... can the standard 172 one not be modified to fit?

And i take it when you guys say 1.2 16v is this the non power steering model, didnt think you could buy a non power steering 16v :S

All Mk2's apart from the RS's have PAS, but its via an electronic colomn as a pose to pump and fluid. You could use any non-RS rack as it has nothing to do with the PAS.

Re- Alternator set-up, you can only use a cup alternator with the cup brackets. Unless you're fabbing the brackets from scratch and make them fit the 172 alternator.

Thanks for answering that for me mini-valver, So my best bet would be to go down the local scrappy & source any 1.2,1.4 etc second hand, low milage rack, would anything else be needed?

Track rod ends you'd need too I think, remember the RS is a wider track!

This is going to be my plan over the winter period...

Clio Cup alternators/brackets seem to be rarer than hens teeth LOL!
