I think it depends how you look at.

If you consider it a Beetle with a Golf body, then it's cool (IMO), but if you consider it a Golf that has been converted to run old tech Beetle gear then it seems pointless and different for the sake of being different.

It is pretty much how most beetle drag cars seem to have their exhausts!
