Alternator overheating

  S4 Avant
Drove up to Durham this afternoon about ten miles, got back to the girlfriends parked car up and everything had been fine. Started the car up, got about half way home when the stop light flicked on, got home. It wasn't far at all. Checked under the bonnet and a lot of steam/smoke was coming from the alternator along with an awful burning smell. Let it cool down and disconeccted the battery.

I've had a look around and the belt looks fine, all the belts were only changed in December. Car hadn't seemed to loose any power or run funny. Problem now is that the battery has died too so can't lock the car.

Anyone help me diagnose the car until I get it into the garage on Monday. Alternator fucked? Anything more serious? I'm gutted.

If you act fast and don't drive the car and change the alternator and aux belt then you will save the battery. Id put a charger on it now just incase.

Cool cheers guys, aux belt, alternator and new battery if required can just be bought from where I work, so that's no problem. Good to know its not to serious.

Just incase anyone searches this thread for future reference the new alternator was fitted on Tuesday, cost about 100 quid. The old one had seized.
