Andy’s Trophy #151

I didn’t really appreciate how great these cars were when I bought my BG 2 years ago.

After a search for the right car I’m very happy to be the new owner of #151.
Many thanks especially to Chris and his family who made me very welcome after my long journey up from Bournemouth and all the other previous custodians who have kept this very original low mileage car in fantastic condition.
I have a few plans for the car which are mainly to refurb the Sachs ,paint correction and underbody corrosion protection for the future.
Cheers Andy.

Well here we go!
The wife reeled me in for gardening duties yesterday so today I set to it.
Full interior detail, new Renaultsport mats, snappy steering wheel and a set of 172 cup wheels which with the greater offset fill the arches a bit better. Going to get the clay bar out tomorrow and decontaminate the paintwork.

They’re standard cast Turinis with a higher offset.
Cool. The reason I thought that was that I was watching Harry Metcalfe’s old review of his Trophy the other day and he specifically mentions that the wheels are lighter than standard. He must mean lighter than standard 182 wheels.

Yeah that’s exactly what he means. Although, not sure how much lighter a Turini is than an oem 182 wheels.
Standard 16's weigh about 9.5KG each where as turinis come in at 8.8KG

Looks great without but don't believe the hype, they are easy to use and if your using fairly fine compound on a random orbital to practice it's very hard to burn through the clear coat - would take a long time to remove any swirls but good practice before using anything more dangerous.

Headphones on, it's a very therapeutic way to spend a few warm evenings on!

Thanks for that. Yes there are a few areas I can’t sort by hand and as 90% of the car is so good I might get one.

I managed a sneaky couple of hours earlier to clean up the engine bay and fitted a new OEM expansion bottle and bonnet catch.
As I’ve said before this car has been well loved so I’m very pleased with the results.
I know its not for the purists but I have never liked the Trophy/cup naked engine thing so I’ve put a cover on.
Suspension swap over the weekend.

Had some time over the weekend to fit the new Brembo discs and pads the previous owner gave me with the car.
I have always liked the look of red brakes on a red car so I took the callipers and brackets off, gave them a really good clean and sprayed them up.

Next job when we eventually get a summer is to jack her up, remove all the arch liners, jet wash the underside and coat with the Lanoguard which worked well on the BG.

After fitting lowered Trendlines in my now sold BG I’ve been struggling with the standard Trophy seat frames being over 6ft.
I was lucky to get a place on a Jon Foz XL limited production run.
Again not one for the purists but boy does it make a huge difference to the way you feel when driving the car.

I really like the ride height of B14s but i need to experience the OEM Sach set up. Over the summer the front dampers will be refurbished and i hope to able to secure a set of a re-run batch of genuine new eibach springs.

Its been over 3 years + since #151 has had any major engine maintenance.
After a full health check during an auxiliary belt service it was apparent that she needed some TLC to get her back to tip top condition.
I picked her up this afternoon after the following.
Full cam belt, aux kit including water pump and Dephaser.
Millers Racing gearbox oil.
New crankshaft pulley.
Sports Cat and Lamda sensor.
Matched inlets.
Custom remap.
Tracking/alignment.
Many thanks once again to Stephen and the very professional team at K-tec.

Looks brilliant (y)

Looking at Jon Foz subframes myself, had mine 14 years now but some reason this year really been feeling seating position is too high, did you have to 'modify' the slider handle on them to fit? How are you finding them?

Thanks mate. They make a huge difference to the way you sit in the car especially if your over 6ft.
I had them on my 182 as well and I didn’t have to modify the slider handle but it is a bit stiff to operate which I suspect is due to the reduced movement.

I got my Sachs back from BG Motorsport today and the service i received was excellent.
Feedback after initial inspection, quotation for the parts required and by pure luck Jane was having a weekend away in Bournemouth and was willing to put them in the boot of her car for me to collect!
The dampers were in poor shape, one needed a new shaft and the other a reservoir.
They now look superb with new sportline springs, OEM retainers, spacer nuts, bushes and top mounts.
Before and after shots.
Hoping to find time this weekend to fit them along with the new rear dampers and springs.

The old girl went off for a stage one polish and a ceramic coat last week which seems to be the norm these days.
Wifey was working today so I went for a full day in the man cave!
Fitted the newly refurbished Sachs/springs and while the front end was apart It seemed daft not to tackle a few other minor refreshments.
As it’s much easier to get the dampers out if the ARB is released I replaced the bushes and brackets for new OEM.
One of the flexible front brake hoses looked tired so both were swapped out.
New Cup rear shocks fitted and painted in a colour very close to the original spec.
I have cleaned and boxed up the excellent condition sach rear dampers that were factory fitted for future originality.
As I already have a new set of stock rear springs and a set of the original Yellow eibach fronts due soon I can rest easy while playing with the ride height on the sport-lines. I must confess to being worried they would lower the car too much but I’m really happy with the way she looks.
Shake down drive tomorrow weather permitting.

Andy, looking really good!
Thanks Alex.
Busy day today as I took the Z to Simply Japanese at Beaulieu.
Got home and took 151 out for a quick blast on her new shocks. It’s difficult to describe but I’m very impressed with the way the Sachs manages to absorb bumps but remain planted without body roll when pushing on.

Put #151 to the ultimate test over the past 3 days at the Trophy a Welsh weekender and to be honest I’m totally knackered!
740 mile round trip including some of the most exciting and challenging roads in the UK with awesome scenery along the way!
The handling and analogue driving experience of these amazing little 182 cars in that environment is bloody mind blowing.
Many thanks to Wiggy for leading the way and SharkyUK for his amazing work in producing the pace notes and the excellent manual to the event.
