More updates from paint. Likely to be a few more days before she’s ready and looking into PPF for when it’s all done - I believe there are no templates so it’ll have to be a bulk custom job. As this ramps up the cost I need to decide whether it’s cost effective. I’ve only picked up one major chip in 10,000 miles so might be simpler to periodically have the bumper redone.

Week away in Wales took the edge off not having the car although the roads up there are begging for a roadtrip when she’s finally back!

Polishing underway. I’m a simple chap so the goal is equally simply - to take a car which was tidy and take the paint to the next level. Tricky with silver as it doesn’t usually get really, really deep and glossy but I’ll get there. A few sanding marks to chase out but nothing I wasn’t expecting and progress is on point.

Finished polishing both bumpers using Koch Chemie H9 to compound and Car Pro Essence to refine, add a bit of a gloss and lay down a primer coat for the ceramic top coats.

Built both back up and I’ve also bitten the bullet and ordered the genuine black inserts for the front from Renault as the reproductions didn’t fit quite as right as I’d wanted.

Car should be back shortly. Hopefully it’ll come up as nicely.

Almost there! Still needs to be flatted and polished and there’s still the petrol cap and side trims to paint but I’m happy. Very happy. Almost happy enough to counteract the utter s**t show that was Legoland today 🤬😘

Back bumper refitted. New bolts for fuel filler and waxoyl behind to protect. Rubber bumpons added. New genuine number plate light fitted. Polishing started. Lots to do.

I kept looking underneath and realising how much work it needs too. Perhaps a winter project.

There you go. I’m nowhere near talented enough to paint sir! This was done by these guys.

More progress. Driver’s side cut using Meguiars microfibre pads and 205 polish. Switched between this and Koch Chemie H9 and used both DA and smaller rotary with wool pads.

Replacement washer jets to be fitted and my front bumper inserts turned up too. Bloody expensive but they fit perfectly.

Going to refit the Fabia splitter temporarily as KTec aren’t likely to get more CF ones in before the end of October.

Compounding done. I also removed all of the arch lines, cleaned them and also the arches themselves with a few surface rust repairs too. Cleaned out half a ton of muck from the front of the sills, recoated the wheels and repainted the hubs while I was there. I did refine too but after 10 hours on it too knackered to take any photos apart from the front wing 😂

it looks fantastic fella! Really, really smart! Bet you are well chuffed? I know I would be!
I’m broken. Back and shoulders feeling it after yesterday lol. I’ll be happy when it’s all back together and I’m not getting stuck in a single garage trying not to damage anything 😂

Absolutely amazing and it looked lovely before. That paint finish is something else!
Very kind. Lots of little niggles, some spare cash and no summer holiday as such this year so I went for it. This is what I wanted to do with both of my 205’s and to a lesser degree my E36 and never managed it. Chassis refresh will be the next big job but that can wait for now.

Ceramic base layer done. Ran out of Cquartz UK midway through second coat; more ordered; not a drama as car tucked away in garage. Rear lights refitted and it’s starting to look like my car again. Stopped car stuff to cook some chicken and drink some beer. Happy with progress.

I dont mean to nit pic because it looks great but simple things like stripping the door components off and the skirts to do the job properly take mere minutes in terms of labour. All comes down to your budget though I guess. Looks smart though.

For the price I paid I’m happy. The skirts are coming off anyway at some point to straighten the jacking points properly. The doors weren’t painted but blended and I can’t find any evidence of a blend line. I didn’t want the job to run into thousands and it could have easily done 👍

Feel free to critique - when it comes to paint you sir are a serious player!

And she’s finished. Everything back together, coated with 3 layers of cquartz UK and 2 of Gliss. Still got to hoover inside but washed the dailies today as well so proper knackered. Brief scare earlier as she ran like a bag of spanners briefly - hopefully just a gremlin from sitting around for 3 months!! Really pleased with where she’s at now. Few little projects to work on including an alcantara headliner and I also need a new scuttle panel as mine’s curling along the seal and looks poo - anyone...?

I dont mean to critique it looks brilliant! Really clean.
Budget is definatly a huge factor when it come to the type of job completed. I think I sometimes price myself out of a job but I wouldn't want to do anything less than the BMW standard we work off.
Please dont think I'm hammering the Bodyshop who completed yours they look like they know what they are doing.

Looks brilliant Andy! Will it be kept in the garage or just on your driveway?

Bet you'll be suprised by the amount of dirt behind the sideskirts! Hopefully no corrosion running into them at the rear arches. Mine has a little there but I did a diy job as it's hidden away anyway by the skirt!

It's nice to not spend thousands on paint as it can change it from being a car you enjoy to one you're scared of driving, in fear of stone chips etc. Not that you couldnt tell it's not had thousands spent on it. Looks fantastic.

Nice work.

Thanks fella. Lives in the garage but it’ll get used - no point having a car to look at. This is why I’ve protected the paint as best I can so it won’t deteriorate (I hope!)

I was quoted close to £4K by another painter who took great pains to show me a car midway through a full repaint with a finish in the door shuts as good as the exterior. He then looked at mine and basically said “you won’t want to spend that” - needless to say he didn’t get my business.

New windscreen fitted today. Been putting this off but managed to pick up a big chip a fortnight ago so bit the bullet.

Made me realise how completely buggered the old screen was. I bought a screen trim kit years ago when RPD had them on offer so that was fitted at the same time.

Changed the pollen filter and fitted new scuttle panel this evening courtesy of @Mbeau and coated the new screen with a drop of Gtechniq G1.

Few little jobs still to do inside before embarking on the underneath. Not looking forward to that...

New screen coated with G1, new blades fitted - now 21” for both - no idea why I’ve always used a shorter one on the passenger side before as it looks crap and doesn’t clear properly. Half price with the trusty Halfords trade card.

Cheeky photos with my mate’s recently acquired 182 today. He’d originally planned to smoke about in it for a bit then sell on but he’s fallen for it and his Fiesta ST’s been left sitting on the drive for the last 2 months.

It needs a lot of love but it’s pretty straight and comes up well after a wash. We swapped the nasty bullets for some spare silver ones I had in the garage. He’s still deciding what to do with it longer term but it crunches 2nd into 3rd so that’s the first big job which is a must. Cosmetics will wait until he’s decided whether to hang onto it.

Crunchy box aside, it’s bloody quick and has some good history too.

Just sat and read all 14 pages of this! Really nice example you have here mate, lot of work went in to it.

I should pick my Iceberg Cup up this weekend coming and this has just got me even more impatient lol.

Road trip up to The Classic Motor Hub in Gloucestershire today with my pal’s 182. Had some fun avoiding main roads and for anyone less than impressed with other car venues in that part of the world, it’s well worth the trip out. Eclectic stock for sale and an even wider selection of cars and bikes visiting.

Journey home less enjoyable as a few miles in the car cut out midway through an overtake. Bump started to avoid a fairly nasty ending and limped to the side of the road. Completely dead and nothing obvious wrong under the bonnet. Turning over but not firing. Recovery turned up and immediately said he couldn’t get the car onto the truck. I’d stuck a FB post up and in a weird turn of events an old client lived less then a mile from where we’d stopped. He builds old racing cars and is an ex BTCC engineer. He rocked up, jiggled ignition leads and she fired up and then got 70-odd miles home without a murmur. Time for new leads I think!
