Thats a bit crap but at least you are now home.

Car really does look amazing mate šŸ‘ŒšŸ‘Œ
Thanks mate.

We had a bit of a giggle as we both expected the 182 to break. Heā€™s had a few issues since he bought it and it ran smooth as today. Highlight was me saying ā€œitā€™s brokenā€ over the walkie talkie - proper TG moment šŸ˜‚

New Valeo coilpack fitted today. All leads checked and cleaned with contact cleaner. Not the most exciting update but it should cure the hesitating and cutting out. Car idling fine anyway.

Iā€™d also be inclined (if you havenā€™t already) to get into the fuse box in engine bay and remove and clean up all relay connections and fuses. Seems unlikely a bump cut it out because of leads.

My money would be on a relay shutting things down going off mine having a similar issue before. Gave the fuse box a prod when mine wouldnā€™t restart and heard a relay click on & was able to start right up. Took the relays out and the blades were really oxidised, quick tickle with some wet n dry and wd40 & been fine for last few years.

Skirts off today. Good news is that the sills appear solid and rot free. Kinda knew that from looking at them when the car was last in the air. Not so great was trying to straighten the front jacking points as they were crushed almost flat. Driverā€™s side hasnā€™t come out too badly but passenger side fought me. Rust treatment applied to the worst bits, lick of silver Hammerite to the bits that werenā€™t rusty and skirts will be put back on with rivnuts.

Started on a few winter projects.

Firstly the front calipers. Mine are Hammeriteā€™d and look OK but I bagged a set from here, had them acid washed and vapour blasted. Picked them up today, chucked them in the oven for a few minutes then 2 coats of VHT silver. Makeshift paint booth was even rubber stamped by the boss šŸ‘

Iā€™ve ordered a rebuild kit and will be upgrading disc and pad and adding stainless bleed nipples and hoses before refitting.

Iā€™ve also painted my fatty induction pipe satin black. It was looking a bit sorry for itself and I hate polishing metal so took the lazy route. Etch primed and 3 coats of paint.

Nice work.

Iā€™ve recently purchased an electroplating setup so I can do the silver zinc plating passivate properly. And the gold passivate colour you get on other cars.

Itā€™s something I used to send away for a service when restoring minis but always wanted to be able to do it myself.

Repainted intake pipe fitted - looks neater. Took her out for a quick spin around the block at the weekend as she hasnā€™t run in a while. Now back in the garage as lockdown v3.0 looms. Engine bay tidy up will be the next job.

I hope you have better luck with it Andy, but i found VHT silver just let the calipers rust through in no time. It looks beautiful when applied but is porous and just lets moisture in to the freshly blasted calipers and they rust in a couple of weeks.

Ideally you want an enamel paint for the calipers, even if just Hammerite.

Foliatec caliper paint kits are good, with a good choice of colours to pick from.

Cheers bud - I havenā€™t fitted yet but will bear that in mind. I have silver Hammerite šŸ‘

I didnā€™t know that sir - thanks. As above, not refitted yet so hopefully I can rescue with a couple of coats of Hammerite!

So with bugger all to do in the way of driving it, started on a mild tidy up of the engine bay. ECU cover painted, repair bracket fitted, inlet manifold, fuel rail and can cover painted.

Iā€™ve also started repainting the spare calipers in Hammerite per @frayz suggestion - thinned it down to give a half decent finish.

The more I do the more needs doing šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

All refitted. OE ignition leads from Engine Dynamics and all the terminals and connectors I could reach cleaned up while I was there.

Fuel flap stickers also fitted and then back into the garage. No road trips at the moment šŸ˜„

Headed to K-Tec yesterday for the car to be assessed and valued for my insurer.

Had a nose around some of the cars they had including a 172 Cup which Iā€™d love to have a play with šŸ˜³

Assessment is that it needs a refresh underneath which I knew already - waiting on their valuation.

Great drive home across the southern edge of Salisbury Plain - just nice to be out for a drive. Not much traffic and some great roads to myself.

What do they mean by refresh underneath?.new bushes etc? @andy_coops

Polite way of telling me that itā€™s a bit s**t šŸ˜‚ to be fair the chassis and bay arenā€™t as good as the rest of the car.
- Beam has a lot of surface grot
- Slight play in OS lower arm
- Oil leaks from sump gasket and gear selector
- Cup spoiler stop light doesnā€™t work

I have a spare beam awaiting refurb, plus hubs and lower arms so itā€™s all on the to do list. I guess the logical step is to strip the entire underside and do it properly. Perhaps a job for later in the year as I really donā€™t want her off the road right now!

Itā€™s a winter job isnā€™t it! A s**t one at that, breaking down in to stages makes it so much easier to swallow! One wheel race at a time I have just sent my spare beam off for coating today. Once itā€™s back I can tackle the boot floor area and then Iā€™m just about done!

KTec valuation came through - Ā£4,000. Happy with that and agreed value now locked in.

KTec carbon splitter fitted today - really happy with that. Next job is to start refurbishing the various bits Iā€™ve got sitting in the garage.

Looks amazing. I love the splitter. That is a fairly reserved valuation in my opinion.
Thanks chap. I guess the difficulty is that under the obsessive polishing, itā€™s an iceberg 172 with 125k on the clock. Iā€™d just about be able to recreate it for Ā£4k if the worst happened and once the chassis and engine bay are done Iā€™ll get it revalued.

They're going up in price now, that's for sure. i think you'd struggle to get it back to that standard for 4k, but i might be wrong. But i guess you get the brunt of it bag.

Carbon splitter is sick! on the list hehe

Old manky exhaust be gone. Ktec on and happy. Picked this up from @Mbeau at the weekend and had it fitted today. Ended up going for a stealth tailpipe - wasnā€™t worried about chopping the bumper but couldnā€™t be doing with a 3ā€ tailpipe sticking out. Bit of fiddling to get it fitting just right and it sounds exactly how I wanted - quieter than the old system at anything other than giving it the howā€™s your mother. Spot on.

Looking good, how's the noise levels at motorway speeds? Any drone? I'm looking at going the other way and getting a straight through the bumper...

Not done any motorway driving yet but at lower speeds where it was noisy before it isnā€™t as bad. Not scientific but itā€™s a lot better.
