Another New Runaround - 2000 Audi A3 Sport 1.8 Turbo

Well after finding out that the Megane could really do with a major service and fixing a few gremlins, it was going to cost more than what I paid for the car so the only real way was to start breaking it for spares and make some money. Had been looking around for a replacement for a while, was looking and E36 3 series/similar age 5 series and nothing that was in my price range that was any good. But then this link poppped up on a chat box on another forum i'm on (Renault-Online.net) and had to take a better look!

http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=361943&pid=3428726&st=0&#entry3428726

Being local I got on the phone, had a chat with a lovely honest chap who just put it nice and simple. He said "I tend to make cars I sell sound worse than they are so that people dont have an excuse to bargain on the price", rest assured he stayed true to his word and it was a nice easy sale! Just wish other idiots that sell cars would take a leaf out of his book!

A few little scratches here and there and reasonable high mileage however the service history and the service book itself is rammed full of info and receipts, and drives like a dream for 144,000 miles! Actually drives better than my friends Seat Ibiza Cupra R which is newer than mine with 60k less miles!

Anyways here's a couple of pictures, will get some better ones up once its been given a proper clean inside and out.

The current fleet ;)

Lol, tell me about it Dave! ;) But when there's a bargain to be had its got to be taken!

Who said that it needs a remap? Tbf, i've just been looking up the cost of changing the turbo from the KO3 to the KO3S or KO4 turbos, then i'll get it mapped I think ;)

If its a run around no point going for a K03s. Just map it. A K03 will still see 190bhp.

Fuel economy's not a problem Tom as I dont commute to work, would ideally like 250bhp with similar torque. Not really too clued about these, but instead of chasing bhp with just plain breathing mods and a remap first I might as well start with a better turbo.

My mapped 1.8T is better on fuel than original. I'm at stage 2 with K03s and running 243bhp and 267 and thats on the limit. Next step for me a new turbo and injectors. CR turbo's will hybrid a K03 for £600 and thats good for 280bhp with no messing about. Thats what i'm planning. Then i get silly ideas of a S4..lol

Another one! I was going to say you're turning into Dave but he beat me to it!

Looking good! Must be a nice change from the French ones. I have a feeling K04 turbo is a lot of work to fit, K03s is pretty simple IIRC from when I looking into it on Golfs.

  Turbos.
Pointless thread unless you tell us how much you paid!

You're brave wanting to swap turbos and remap a car on 144k miles!

Ah that sounds good with regards to that CR turbos building a hybrid! Whats the limit powerwise before the injectors are maxed out also? If its alright i'll probably pm you for some more info as i'm really not that clued up with this VAG lark! lol

Lol Vish, yeah I know its bad. I personally blame it all on Dave, being a bad influence!

K04 swap is simples if you have all the parts.

Englebert nowt wrong with 144k on a 1.8T and modding..haha! There's loads on 150k+ on the VW forums. I know a lad running 220bhp on 186k and still on the original turbo and gearbox with no signs of giving up..

The only weak point generally is the clutch.

Around 250ish then all you need is the injectors from a S3, TT etc

Lol, calm down! I paid £1300 for it, and as said up in my first post it the engine feels fantastic. Quiet as you like and very smooth, supposedly good for hundreds of thousands of miles! The service histories so extensive that mileage doesnt really mean alot, i've seen much worse running 20v turbo engines that are on 50-80k miles because they havent been serviced regularly.

So glad I gave you the link for this car :p plans sound good although if you dont drive for work what do you need a runaround for? Spend the money on the Clio :)

Yeah cheers matey! The reason for the second car if I do drive anywhere I dont have to drive in a 2 bucket seated clio that makes my ears bleed when I drive it! lol Its nice to have a comfy/quiet car to drive around when your not feeling like driving like a hooligan!

Bullet proof mile munchers. I'd be surprised at 190 from a Ko3, but I know they pull silly figures when you send them to CR.

Presuming because you've not put it in the description that it isn't a TQ?

Well it depends what RR you have it on of course but on a recent RR day i attended most people with a K03 were running 185+ Most being low 190's. They certainly dont make the 200bhp some mappers advertise though..lol

Bill is a f**king hero and who does the work and mapped mine. The guy does everything for the love not for the money. He was mapping mine at 10.30pm and would have happily been there all night i reckon! haha

(Nick, pm'ed you back)

Last mildly off topic post, sorry Nick!

LEGend. If you've got time have a read of some of the hybrid and BT conversions on Audisport, Welly and Paul aka Tufftybloke.

I know what you mean. When I use my mums Polo Gti it could do with more power 35-40bhp extra at least. Boooost......

Just leave the 'run around' standard mate, what good is the extra oomph, so it'll get down the A3 slip road 1 second quicker?

You've got a badger of a toy car, leave the audi well alone and keep it for more than a month - it will comfortably do another 144k.

Toms got a point, there isnt much point mapping it. My mates got a mk4 golf with the same engine and that is mapped to 174bhp. It goes well but its not quick enough for the amount of fuel it burns. Hes considering returning it to standard to get the mpg up :(

Don't be daft Tom.....this is Nick we are talking about after all....he doesn't do sensible second cars!
He's the only person who buys a less economical car than his Cup....

Thats strange. Get it on a vagcom. A map WILL make them better on fuel unless you boot it ofcourse...lol

Huh? Not sure what that is chap, as said I know some things but tbh not that much! lol

Turbo Quattro buddy :)

and you will first off with the extra power

I disagree - I still think you will drive it exactly the same as before. Sometimes you'll raz about, other times you'll sit at 65 watching the MPG go up on the DIS. The only difference is when you boot it, you'll have more power...

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
If this model has the AGU engine youve picked a cracker - A k04 + manifold and remap and youve got 250 bhp

Lol you guys need to chill! When buying a second car did I ever say that it needed to be economical? The way I look at it is i'll now be driving the Audi 90% of the time and only really using the clio for trackdays, going out for a mad 5 minutes and the odd breakfast run. So I dont see spending money on this a problem as it'll get more use than the clio does!

And anyways this is so much smoother to drive, got in the clio the other day to drive it to the pub and wish i'd never. On track it's perfect however on the road really its just a noisy/uncomfy/stuttering piece of s**t! lol
