Another Vista thread...

Right I've just been offered a copy of Vista for £16 after Christmas, I can't turn that down!
Any ideas what the retail cost is going to be and I presume I'll lose all my software changing OS?!

How system intensive will it be over XP?! Currently running 1.5 GB RAM, AMD 64 3200 and GeForce 6800XT 256MB

not very intesive, i ran a beta on my laptop, worked fine, and this only has 512mb memory. Vista has windows xp etc compatibility mode, it doesn't work very well, so some of your apps may work. Also their isn't many antivirus progs for it, only one i saw was pc-cillin

I just installed it (legal version) but the drivers for my modem dont work on it as well as a selection of other programs that I use..... The hard disk is back out and am sticking with XP for a while longer.

which version?

If you're upgrading to a new OS, unless you want a flaky, unreliable, conflicted environment - then a reformat is a MUST.

If you format obviously, anything thats not backed up will be lost, but I really really wouldn't advocate simply installing it over the top of XP.

With that said, I also wouldn't bother installing it until they have sorted out the million and one issues that have and will occur between now and SP1.

Personally I'll be waiting until that point till I let it loose on my PC's. And to be honest, with XP theres not a lot I can't do...so I may not even upgrade at all.

thanks Saner, my PC looks like it'll happily accept it..

..as for version, not sure yet, its so cheap because its coming from someone who works at Microsoft, they get all software dirty cheap!

im running the beta rc2 test and it is brilliant! got it free direct from microsoft havent had a problem yet and i have had it on for about 2 monthes

Well, i still think its going to be buggy when it comes out! an i guess most business will stop with olderversion for a bit! because it means testing everything etc! Yeah i would agree i really dont think its necessary having so many retail options i also think the full system is quite pricey!

and the operating system is like 2 years late? And also there taking a big risk, releasing office and vista at the same time! i mean there microsofts biggests money makers! :P Also after christmas aswell....

Also what reasons should people change? what so there computer looks more graphical like a MAC? :P

Home premium will do for me! wonder how long will have to wait for a cracked official version to crop up on torrents.!

They're getting better!

I have a problem now... I need to upgrade from Beta 2 to RC1/2. But I need to do the online activation. Problem is, the internet connection on that machine is screwed, but because I can't get into vista to fix it I can't sort the internet connection out!

I'm going to have to phone them to get an activation key. I don't know whether it will be like that in the final realise. But it seems that if it feels it's not a valid key, you might not be able to log into it!

True they might be getting better, but aint there always going to a way around? i mean it might not feasible but i think where there is a will there is a way :) Well lets hope it is not like that when its released! And then im guessing when i purchase it i will get two copies! an get a new pc for one of them! Also the pain is i wont be able to upgrade from a 32bit operating system to a 64bit will i? got to do a complete reinstall so i thought and that sucks!
