Anybody else wish they'd left their car std

I bought my 172 for 6k back in september, and sinse then have splashed another £7k at it. I kinda regret spending so much as i could now be debt free, but i dont regret doing what i have to the car. Everynow and then i think about selling up and clearing my debt, but then i drive it and it always makes me smile.

It will be the ONLY car i ever modify, as yes, its a waste of money really, but its soemthing you do cos it makes you happy and smile every time u drive the thing.

Ive always wanted to modify at least 1 car in my life, and now i have, and it will stop there - well, once the clio is finished it will.

I modified my last car but just got bored of it.....there's always someone with more money and a 'better' car anyway so you end up chasing your tail and wasting money.

in fairness the entire 7k has not been mods, but a rough break down would be:

Powerflow straight through exhaust - £350
Pagid Blues, Brembo High Carbons, Goodridge lines - £270
Trophy Alloys - £500
OZ Ultraleggeras with rubber - £880
H&R's - £750
Mark Fish H&R fitting and setup - £400 (he also fitted splitter etc, so this is slightly lowered figure)
Front Splitter - £115
Front strut brace - £115
Rear strut brace - £110
ITG Maxogen - £400
Cobra Imola S seats - £500
Harnesses - £120
Sparco race wheel - £120
Momo Boss kit - £40
Home garage equipment (jacks, stands etc) - £300
Cleaning products - £400+

That lot comes to £5370, and away from the modding as such, have spent about £2k on repairs and things like cambelt change etc.

The whole point of modding your car is to customise it to your liking, hence why aftermarket parts where ever introduced so you can make your car unique.

If its such a bother for you, put it back to standard (or as much of it as you can). Simple

t**t he he i think about selling mine all the time but when i drive the beast i really do enjoy it for the money there is no way i can get anything faster and as of yet i have not messed with the luxury side but looking back wish maybe i got coilovers i love the apex but the roads around are me are shocking with pot holes everywhere!!!! i would say i have easily spent 1500 maybe on my car since purchasing nearly 2 years ago now

this is exactly what happened to me with the 172, I modded it and got it looking exactly how I wanted it, but I got bored with the little niggles that come with modifications, but I mainly got sick of having to pay £800 to insure it when the Megane I now have is worth 3 times as much and I only pay £400. I'm leaving the Megane std, its easy to insure and just as easy and comfortable to drive. It also has all the toys and more than the 172 had, Recaro seats and its completely std.

I did get fed up with the valver eventually (hense why I sold it) was just not good for daily use.

I'll mod the 172 here and there but no where near the extent I went to with the valver...

I did subtle mods to the Alize. Don't regret it as it looks so much better with the Eibachs, Dynamique alloys, 172 spoiler. Didn't spend too much and the insurance only went up slightly. Won't be modding the next car tho.

That's odd, when I met Jon/TheJesus and Taylor the other week to see my old car, they were absolutely hammering the f**k out of it.

Andy from GDI took it out and hammered f**k out of it. Jon says he does nothing but "give it death" and theres been no problems with it mechanically what so ever. He had some compression test done on it to and came back near enough brand new like it had just come out the factory. So it's a pretty healthy car for such mods and the type of driving it gets.

Till it goes pop...I couldn't be arsed with that constantly on my mind when driving.

Chris - I've done 8k of hard miles in it and like you say, compression and leakdown is better than Andy had expected on a 1 year old car, let alone an ITB'd one that's led a hard life if we are honest . When I go out for a drive it gets driven HARD and bar some ghey sensor related bull s**t it's not let me down once. It starts first time everytime and is a pleasure to drive, in fact according to Laura it's nicer to drive than hers in terms of throttle response and not needing to gear down on motorways when you get caught up in these bullshit average 40 zones and want to get back upto 70/80 again. Coming from a Williams which was horrendously loud and constantly breaking, this is an absolute pleasure.

Ali - if it goes bang then so what, it's only a couple of hundred for a 172 engine, everything else can be bolted back on. There's no reason it should or will go bang anymore than yours or a completely stock one would... the only problems I can see are gearbox, and to be honest it's been fine, still tight and crisp. It's my daily drive and I'm bang on 1k miles a month average so far... pretty impressive imo considering it's running miles more power than it came with.

In 2 and a half years of ownership, the only mod Ive done is silvervision bulbs! Due to lack of funds. :dapprove: So apart from that, it's standard, completely standard. Even commonly changed things like the panel filter, exhaust and stereo are standard.

I'll never modify another car again! std is the way forward. Was in my Bro's R32 today, So comfy, leather seats. AC on. quiet, until you boot it and hear the milltek.

Mines loud, uncomfy, brakes don't work till their hot, idle's like a bag of s**t. it's fast...but i'm can't be bothered anymore! Anyone else feel the same or am i just getting old?

I made the mistake of buying a brand new set of alloys and tyres, whilst I like them and they look ok, for the money I could have had a good set of second hand 172ff alloys which would have looked better.
All the other parts on my car I have changed I bought secondhand (repeaters, dash inserts, IK etc). When I sell the car I will sell these non standard parts on and return it to standard, will prob be up for sale standard at the end of next month, but i will be holding out for a high price.

i dont think its a case of "ive left mine standard and having seen this im pleased i have".

if you are going to mod, its because its something you enjoy, and you want to acheive something. Not something that you feel you should try because other people have and then regret it.

Its the best thing i have done, i know its a waste of that money, but i have enjoyed every second of it - and thats what is important.....everyone is going to hit a point and think it was silly, but thats growing up, and you just have to think of the fun you had while you were doing it.

Idealy i wish i'd got eibac pro'd or spotlines - not sure which is lower and left it at that. Infact i wish i'd bought a std V6 when i had the chance. I've probably spent about the same....

I dont regret any mods id hate my car standard i like mods to make it more individual i dont like having the same as everyone else and mods allow you to make them small changes to make your car look a little more indivdual,or make it look how you feel it should have been made from the start!

I think i like modded cars due to my dad having always modded his mussle cars and his jap cars, and since being with my boyfriend he has had 11 cars and modded every single one, yeah its cost him a fortune probabaly enough to buy and aston db9, but he does it because he loves it.

But each to there own some cars look rare when there standard lol like seeing a standard saxo vts or vtr looks much better now in standard form.
