anyone do computer networking for a living?

i need a career change pronto and was thinking of going to evening classes at college to do computer networking?

anyone know if its mega hard or has any info about it at all?

Well I didn't do a course, but from my last job was able to pick up quite alot! Ended doing alot of cabling jobs for little projects (Outreach centres). It's not that hard. If your willing to learn, then should be easy. What parts of networking you looking into? Cabling or Network configuration?

not really too sure, i dont know if the course covers the cabling side of things id need to look into it more, just dying to get a change of jobs, i feel like im stuck in a rut

Ah that stuck in the rut feeling, we've all been there. Managed to get a job with the plod, so plenty of opportunity to move up (hopefully to Computer Crime, big $$$).

As far as courses go, with net config, look up on details on CCNA (Cisco course) or if your looking for novell then CNA. Mates who went Uni and did computer science had netman, which seemed to cover mosts bits. The CCNA is very good for Router/Switch config and VLan'S etc

I don't do networking anymore as part of my job but I used to do some before and I didn't find it that interesting but you can get very weel paid for it.

Always wondered how do you get a job in Computer Crime? I mean do you have to work up from a normal police officer?

I work in a Hi-Tech Crime Unit and worked in the IT department of the police for a couple of years before applying for the job.

Forces are different, they have to consider the knowledge that a police officer has over a cilivian with all the law side and a cilivian with there computing knowledge. There is a mixture of both where I work.

im not 100% on networking, just want to branch into something to do with computers, at the moment im working with my old boys company fitting kitchens/bathrooms and just general joinery but i dont want to be a joiner for a living and my hearts just not in it at all but its keeping me going for now

Best thing to do from my experiance is to get a job doing desktop support within IT then you have a good grounding for any job within IT. It certainly helped me.

Defo agree with the above, How I started too. Get a feel for a career and go from there.

And as far as I know, you shouldn't have to be on the beat to move on to Computer Crime. People where trying to tell me that I had to do 2 years on the beat before I could get a job in IT with the Police :/ But no we are classed as civilians.
