my ipod nano has broke so i need a new one, i dont like waiting for things so if i were to get the iphone it owuld be from ebay and probably from america so on with the questions

will an amrican iphone work in the uk and will all the fetures work correctly?
i will be using an o2 payg sim i guess this would be ok?

how much bigger is the iphone over the touch if at all?
Anyone with a touch is the internet fully useable?

atm im heading towards the phone, it has everything you would need in one unit, but what size is it? and will it work correctly?

It'll work if you unlock it but the visual voicemail feature will not function.

The internet works great, no problems at all. The iPhone is a similar size to the Touch.

iPhone:
Size and weight
  • Height: 4.5 inches (115 mm)
  • Width: 2.4 inches (61 mm)
  • Depth: 0.46 inch (11.6 mm)
  • Weight: 4.8 ounces (135 grams)
Touch:
Size and weight
  • Height: 4.3 inches (110 mm)
  • Width: 2.4 inches (61.8 mm)
  • Depth: 0.31 inch (8 mm)
  • Weight: 4.2 ounces (120 grams)

  MK2 PH2 & E46 330
a friend of mine got one and it works fine with the UK sim cards. Internet was fully useable too. Dont think he even had to unlock it.

If he bought it from Ebay then it was possibly already unlocked, otherwise it will not work with any other sim than AT&T.

The iphone may well work but in america and in the UK they have specific tarrifs so that you can get the best out of the phones. with it being specific to O2 postpay there is no guarantee you're phone will work/work properly with any other network even prepay O2. Also if you do get 1 which isn't working properly even if you're on O2 prepay you wont get any support in getting things working. its a big risk and tbh, its not an amazing handset imo. its pretty much just an Ipod than you can make phone calls from...

O2 handsets are normally unlocked arnt they?

i wonder if the uk iphone will be.

The big attraction for the genuine O2 tarrif is that it includes "unlimted" data use. I'd not wanting to be using that graphics heavy web interface if I was paying for the data. This would be the main reason for me to get a UK iPhone. However, as has already been said, it doesn't appear to be much of a phone to me, and makes a fairly small iPod...

O2 postpay handset are normally unlocked. Apple have decided they only want 1 network to distribute the handsets in the UK thats O2, to the point that they collaborate with O2 on the tariffs. I would personally much rather spend the money I'd spend on an iphone on a smart phone and a normal ipod...

My most recent smart phone (N73) was anything but smart and the iPhone I used was far better.

Yep i love mine.....It is a little basic but with future updates it will be improved.

but at the minute the way it is its just a great phone the way it works and how it does it is fantastic.

I bought an htc kaiser pretty much at the same time as the iphone which is probably the most feature packed phone out there.....Since getting the iphone the kaisers been sat in the box and im thinking of selling it.

I wasnt going to get one when it was first announced the lack of 3g/mms.etc put me off but im soo glad i did and cant see me getting rid of it until maybe the next iphone which ill defo be getting.

but combining the 2 would mean less stuff to carry and witht he phone being only 100 more than the touch seems like a bargain tbh.

Think i need one of these :)

when are they actually properly released in the uk?

November 9th :)

I'll be doing the same as J273 and buy this version of the iPhone and if/when they release a new version next year I'll simply buy that too. The price to buy any new model will be less than most smart phones would cost sim free so it's not an issue.

yeah, but if its being done properly the minimum tariff was then £35 per month on top of the cost of the phone.
I work for O2 prepay so have had so much promotion for the Iphone that I may be a little bitter about it... however as far as I'm concerned a Sony Ericsson walkman phone with a 4gb memory will cost a fraction of what the Iphone will and is a lot better as a phone, and genuinely very good as an MP3 player. I cant understand the hype about such a basic phone at all, as a phone its behind a lot of phones. It only makes sense if you dont think of it as a phone. The apple ipod brand is huuuuuge, and so all the people in with branding/fashion/style etc etc will love the iphone as its a nice accessory for them, and all the Ipod fans will love it death as its basically a nice flash new ipod, with a couple of extra features.
This is of course all in my own personal opinion

iphones are good because dummies can operate them. Ask a dummy how they can upload music to a walkman phone and watch the expression.

got an iphone as i live most of my time here in the USA. the maps is like 'mapquest' you can have a choice of standard map views and destinations, or you can go like google earth and have actual satellite picture images.

I had my phone unlocked and had a few third party applications installed, msn, summer board etc.... the phone is legend. Im on AT+T at the mo as thats the only official carrier here and i have unlimited internet and data access each month so its great.

My Orange sim card works fine. Remember it runs on Edge not 3g internet and data so most networks have packages to do that already. For example, Orange have an online offer where you get free texts each month and free evening data and internet iirc. O2 has specific packages which they will phase in for pre pay iphones. The only thing you have to disable if you dont have unlimited is the auto email i.e. push mail. as this checks normally every 20 minutes or so. turn this off and everything else is 'pay as you use'

i use mine for the internet, email, msn, and a host of other things as i have unlimited. i will simply be adding a 'bundle' or 'bolt on' when i get home to give me more time on the web.

So in answer to all the messages, yes the iphone is gimicky but its a brilliant device, the keyboard takes a few days to get used to your specific typing skills but once its learned them it is way faster than using normal phone keys.

If anyone wants to ask any questions, pm me and i'll do my best. as i say had it nearly 2 months now and love it.

ive had a play on one was very impressed with it certainly wouldnt turn one down google earth was alot of fun.

I'm the complete opposite. I'd rather keep my N73 than have an Iphone even if it was given to me. People want it just because it's apple.

To be fair it does appear to be a nice device to use and own. Perhaps it doesn't excel in any particular area other than just 'being nice', but that's enough to sell it...

I doubt I'll be getting one, mind. The lack of MMS support would be a big negative for me. I like my daily CK shots from rasclart TBH :(

i forgot to add my current UK phone is the aforementioned Nokia N73. I like the N73 and have a 2gb expansion card in it so have 100's and 100's of songs on it. i find the nokia interface good and love the phone. However, its not a patch on the iphone function wise.

For a start, my N73 is constantly freezing and locking up despite keeping up with the latest firmware etc... its heavier than my iphone and has very limited functions when compared to the easy interface and functions of the iphone.

Most people saying they think its simply 'nice' are doing so to try and make out they are more intelligent than most and to try and prove to people they know what they are talking about... sadly most do not. The keyboard is superb, may seem clumsy at first until it learns your preferences, but once it does i guarantee you can text and write faster on one than you can on a standard phone keypad regardless if you use predictive text or not.

The iphone is 8gb, they discontinued the 4gb here in the USA due to its lack of sales, they also dropped the price of the 8gb shortly after.

There are down sides, the lack of mms is a bummer but if you get yourself on a data and internet plan you can directly email your pictures to people instead. not as good i agree, but it is of a slight consolation.

I appreciate that people in the UK have them and are using them, but i am using mine on AT+T with all the functions it was designed to use (and have been doing so for nearly 2months). The iphone is much more than a gimmick, its fast, functional and reliable. I use mine all the time, whether it be for calls, texts, or checking emails and pdf files (3rd party application). remember, you get to view internet sites as they appear, not watered down mobile or wap versions and its fast too even though it is on edge.

If you dont like it then thats fine, but state reasons why and back it up with some factual comparisons rather than sweeping statements like

'people just buy it because it is apple'

Play with one for a while and then tell me the same

I'm honestly of the opinion that the main selling point is the fact that its the apple iphone. not because of the features of the 'phone'. I'm posting against the iphone because for the costs I dont think its worth it. When I come to upgrade I have my eye one 1 phone and 1 phone only:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_w960-2008.php

However I will say that from working in customer services for O2 people are very loyal to certain handset manufacturers. It would take a lot to convince me to buy anything thats not a Sony Ericsson and there is nothing on this planet that would see me buy a motorola.
There are people who feel exactly the same about other handsets, die hard nokia, samsung and motorola fans and now theres a good market for apple fans aswell.
You'll also find many people dedicated to plam trio's or PDA type handset like the XDA etc.
