AO52VMR Clio 172 Cup Sprint/Hillclimb Project

  Clio 172 Cup
Picked this up on Saturday for £600. Has MOT, needs a few bits sorting on her. Anyone know the car?

From what I can tell so far:

Polybushed Dog Bone
Lowered ??mm on ?? yellow springs
Braided Brake Hoses
MK1 Clio Wheels?
Rude Boy Exhaust which instead of cutting bumper out has been cable tied on

Plan is new standard shocks all round on standard springs
Turinis
Standard Exhaust
Timing Belt etc

Go racing??

Lower ball joint was a NIGHTMARE to get out of the hubs, literally the worst ive had! Went to fit the new ones and they have me the wrong ones! Cheers!

Still waiting for my Cooksport springs to turn up. Fitted the new rear calipers which were on the breaker onto this one, just need to bleed them. Hopefully picking up some camber bolts and upper engine mount polybush today/tomorrow.

Hoping for a road test on Sunday!

Do you know where your going to hillclimb? and what class you will be in? I sprint and hillclimb an Audi TT quattro (330bhp) against Clios and its a challenge for them to keep up. Which is why my Clio is going to become a rally car as it wont get put in a class with Turbo cars. Saying that I race in the same locations as Nick from Pure MS and he is very very quick but he doesnt have to keep trim/seat/lights etc in his class so is very light

Going to be running with the Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb Club and the rounds they are doing. From what ive read im going to go into the Modified Road class!

That has a couple of rounds at Wiscombe which is a great hill! That's a fast class and the one Nick from pure motorsport was in. They all run full race slicks and drill out every panel to get the cars a light as possible. You will have a great time. I will keep my eyes out for you if you come to Wiscombe and say hello. #gofastorgohome !!

From what ive read Road Modified requires me to leave interior in, moment I take it out I need a cage etc. What class do you run?

Standard class is standard. Standard tyres
Road modified is a complete car (interior, radio, tax mot etc) but can do throttle bodies, lsd, lower CWP, coilovers etc, but not solid topmounts, wheel spacers and a few things like that. Some places are standard tyres, others can use like track tyres.
Modified production is pretty much fully lightweight stripped out, caged, slick tyres etc etc, doesn't have to be road legal

@Brushwood69 , I've never been to anywhere where a clio is in the same class as a quattro? ?
They are in different classes, clio in 1b up to 2000cc, tt in 1c cos of turbo (over 2000cc)

  Clio 172 (CUP)
I ran in modified production/road class last year (in the South East), never was quite sure whether an after market LSD was allowed or not. The regs are not the clearest. IIRC the turbos add a percentage eg. 40% to the cc as an equivalent.

Turbo have a cc x1.5 multiplying factor in sprints and hillclimbs which is a bit more equal than the cc x1.7 in rallying.
It means the renault 5 turbo's compete in the under 2000cc class and I had some great battles with them in my clio.

I think the class structure if different down south which is upto 1800 or over for road iirc also turbo multiplier is 1.4

Correct ASWMC regs are a1,a2,a3 & a4 being standard road going I'm in a3 which is >1800cc and not over 2600cc with the Audi being 1.781 x 1.4 is fine. If you enter nationals then its over 2000cc. You can remove carpets, run composite bonnet, buckets & harnesses but have to leave trim and rear seats. However you can run MSA list 1b tyres and most runn 888s or MAXSPORT RB5s both are very very soft.

Diffs are free as is induction which means to you turbo any car but need to apply the 1.4

Not a Clio as I have not built that yet although I did sprint it yesterday.

Suspension all done, brakes done. Got bored with my spare headlights so gave them a quick 5 min clean! Came out good enough to use!

Any pics of your hillclimb cars boys?
Vingoe_Cup 004.jpg

The car runs in class A3 .... nowhere near as quick as brushwood69 but still great fun. The spec is ...

Throttle bodies, Clio 3 cams, ktr cat back exhaust, sports cat, gaz coilovers, negative camber all round, nice wheels, toyo r888r tyres, momo wheel, carbon seats, full harnesses, half cage, willwood brakes, 1144 pads, short shift, etc etc

The attraction of class A3 is that it is a very popular class ... up to 20 cars in the class ....and a wide range of interesting cars: last weekend I was against 5 other clios and a range of MX5s, alfas, seats, etc. There was even a vauxhall firenza.

Done a little more work on the Clio today, removed the inlet noise reducer valve and carbon canister. Made an air intake from where the front fog light was to the air box. Just need to get something to connect the pipe to the fog light surround a bit better.

Checked the belt/dephaser as no history and wanted to see if the belt was usable for now.. Tip-x marks, great, fills me with confidence thats its been timed up correctly!

Then went for a quick spin, it desperately needs tracking, tyres and a good nut and bolt check now

Looks better and better every time I stop by, although I much prefer the oz's you had originally.

I've just had to do my cambelt again, after a so called specialist decided tippex was a better idea than locking tools

  Listerine & Poledo
You might want to check in the blue book that those tyres are permissible in your class

Fitted the whiteline ARB. Yet to try it out, waiting on Spigot rings and spacers to fit the wheels as well.

The tool is in the exhaust cam, was a fair bit out as was no where near the inlet cam or the bolt hole!

Cam timing set, crank way off - Had to loosen belt and do it without the belt on in the end to get number 1 at TDC with the tool sitting nice!

I've just done mine, was a very similar story with the tippex, happy to say it's much better now
