are 172 cup inlets the same a 182?

  182
No not the same , plus polishing them stops them cooling or something like that. iirc someone posted in a thread a while back about the down turns of polishing but tbh you would not notice the differences anyway.

Paint them properly

Yes Dave i agree they do look nice, but a decent paint job can look just as good.

the lower R.S inlet is better cast as mentioned above, iirc its the carbon canister breather pipe attachment which is different on the 182.

182 RS Stamped are the best from the factory.

You really would struggle to notice the difference though, a rolling road might spot a bhp or two but it wont be enough to feel the difference.

If you fancy trying though, Lesley has got a set (upper and lower but the lower is what matters) for sale from our RB182 (we have an RS2 inlet instead) for 40 quid.

Thanks for the offer chip don't think I'm going to bother possibly more hassle than its worth.

Lower inlets are either non-RS or RS stamped (RS stamped came on 172 cup and 182's)

Top inlets are completely different between 182 and 172 - the 172 has a breather hole that fits onto the oil breather on the head. The 182 doesn't. They aren't interchangeable and there's no performance gain from either design
