Are my strut mounts fucked?

I've done a brief search on this but the results mostly seem to revolve around changing them.

I have recently noticed that there is a gap of around 3-4mm between the body, and the rubber bearing when viewed from the top with the bonnet open. The car still handles fine, but the steering feels a bit vague, and the ride seems as though the dampers are failing.

I'm guessing this means my top mounts are toast? I'm not too bothered, as I'm considering a new suspension and solid mounts anyway.

Top mounts always sit proud of the turret when the car is on the floor, so wouldnt worry about them.

sounds liek your front dampers may need replacing due to leakage though.

Hmm ok cheers. There's no visible leakage front or rear, but the ride quality is definitely getting worse. For the price of new dampers all around, I may as well just get a new suspension then.

yeah, standdard mounts sit proud, tbh unless you track it all the time just get new renault mounts, solid arnt worth it unless you are on track loads/have aids

I'm just getting into track days so it may be an option. Is it worthwhile replacing the OEM anyway if I was to fit a new suspension? Do they actually wear out (@4 years) and what are the signs?

Depending on track day usage mate, I would go for Eibach sportlines, new dampers and AST top mounts.

On the road my car was a lot better to drive on sportlines than either the H&R's or AST's I had fitted.
And the solid top mounts are awesome, so definately recommend them as they give great steering response.

If you do a lot of trackdays you'll notice the difference with coils, but worth the extra cost.....for me it's debatable.

The thing is, new dampers, springs and mounts isn't going to be that much cheaper than coilovers, is it?

EDIT: Oh I was looking at Koni dampers. OEM all round is much cheaper.

Possibly not, however coilovers do not as a rule come with mounts so if you are replacing your mounts you will have to get them in addition to any damper/coilover kit you buy be it the solid mounts or OE ones.

Yeah thanks. Just checking out some gear over at Ktec to get an idea of pricing. FFS I don't even know if I want to keep the car but, I can't sell it with fucked dampers regardless.

About 2 months ago i had my fronts completely apart as it is lowered, i forever drive on country roads and it annihilates itself on potholes, thought this may have smashed the turrets up! Just finished putting them back together when my friend in his (standard) Clio turned up, and they where the same! Felt like a tit!
