Sent my V5 to record changes as iv done a conversion, and today i get a later 6-7 weeks after sending it saying:

To update our records with the change of vehicle details, you must provide evidence from the list below..

- A Receipt of purchase on headed paper, from a garage, confirming the engine number, engine size(cc) and the fuel type for the reconditioned or replacement engine, if one has been fitted.

- a Inspection Report from a organisation such as the AA or RAC

- An inspection report provided for a insurance purposes.

- Written confirmation from the manufacture showing the Engine number and Size,

I was ready to go on the road this weekend aswell as everything is sorted except tax which i cant without V5 ffs :( So now i have to find a garage that will write a report for me in exchange for some pennies :(

Anyone fancy some ££ to write a report on some garaged headed paper ;)oj

...and they wonder why people dont bother telling them about engine conversions. As with about every other legal organisation, pen pushing idiots.

Bloody hell, was never that complicated when I did my Mk1 Clio conversion 2 years ago. I just went to the DVLA in wimbledon, editted the V5 there, then taxed the car and when I got home drove it!

I guess its changed as there's been no doubt loads of accidents with conversion cars.

I wish it was that simple nick, but im guessing due to the high accident claims in young people not telling the Dvla they have to take drastic measures to make sure its been done correctly, which i dont blame them.

But lucky for me a mate is checking the car over when its back up and running so il ask him to write a report since he is a garage owner :)

This was a recent law to prevent people carrying out DIY Engine conversions.

Big thread on here about a while ago.

Didn't know that or see the thread, interesting actually.

Cheers for that nugget of info.

I'm sure you could pop down to someone on here and have it looked at?

Ahh, so im guessing you have had to do the same thing then, as you've done a DIY conversion?

did it take long for them to produce the V5 back to you? as its allready taken 7weeks for them to send this letter,

I'm guessing from what your saying Gaz, I think there just trying to prevent people doing a conversion on there driveway. Though having it done at a garage in the DVLA's eyes means its done to a good standard which to us realistic people know that it may not be the case.

Not a chance!

Its a track car that gets driven on trade plates! ;) I hate paperwork and they can stick it up their chuffer for all I care. I won't be registering jack diddly with them!

Thats ridiculous, I know plenty of people who aren't employed by /own a garage but are more than able to perform an engine conversion.

Why should they force you to use a garage?

Plus, imo only people who will do a decent job would declare it to the DVLA, so all they have done is increased the number of incorrectly registered cars on the road.

Yeah but in my case, I'd stick a Rover T-16 into the ZR. I highly doubt Nanjing in China will send a letter confirming an engine built about 15 years before they bought the rights to MG-R lol.

Hell, I bet a lot of DIY engine conversions are done by people who are just as competent, if not more competent, than a lot of the garages in the UK.

Bit stupid if you dont declare it and then you end up beeing in a car crash and they later find out that you had changed the engine without notifiying them. iv just done it because i wanted to do it properly and not a gypo ;)

I'm not condoning not declaring it, just pointing out that now less will be declared.

I declared mine as I wanted to know that if there was any problems i'd be clean. One thing that does get my back up is when people don't declare there conversion, i'm sure 9 times out of 10 they will have changed tax bands so it almost makes them as bad as lazy scum that claims benifits!

Fair play to you for going through it all and making the conversion all legit!

Exactly, the last thing you want is the 5-0 pulling you over and your in trouble, i was always planning on making it legit, people did tell me dont theres no point etc, but i couldnt face losing my licence tbh..

If they wanted to pay lower tax, change to different car! Though if you have the money to do a conversion, then in my opinion you must the have the money to make it legit like paying the right tax.
