Argh! Gearstick feels like a dislocated arm!

Pulling into home in first, select reverse and it won't go in. Try a few more times and nothing. Car is stuck in first no matter what, gear stick feels like a floppy arm!

Jacked it up to have a look but it's dark and wet so not much to go by, feels like it's come out of its 'socket' - is this possible?!

Have called the AA, typical I need the car tomorrow!! Any suggestions?

Pull the rubber boot back where the linkage/arm meet and make sure the nut is there/tight.
and check the nut on the adjuster clamp on the linkage.

It's possible the nylon bush on the small end of the shift arm could of worn to the point of the ball dropping out, but I'd be surprised.

So my suspicions were correct, the small plastic housing that joins the gear stick to the gearbox had fallen out. AA were out at 6am to look at it and he's put it back in but said it should be replaced, and the gearbox seals could do with replacing too.

I'm more annoyed that this part was replaced last month when I had it serviced, by someone who I thought was reputable. Second thing that's needed fixing since he serviced it...

Time for some updates.

Booked the car into a local garage who family have used for years and trust. I've just got off the phone to them and it turns out that the previous gearbox linkage part/join/thing has worn away at the gearbox seals and it's now seeping gearbox oil.
Apparently it's not a couple of hours job, it's a gearbox out and take apart job which is going to cost considerably more.
I'm obviously not happy and need to weigh up options. Thinking about giving the specialist that serviced it a call and see what he thinks.

Every 1*2 /jc5 gearbox leaks from that seal (selector seal) and is very common issue.

That will have nothing to do with gear selection problems or sloppieness unless it has not been topped up reguarly and all fluid has been lost which =knackerd box.

The specialist would be the place i would be going.

Your local mechanic without being rude knows nothing

there is also a couple of bushes and rubber ball under the gear gaitor which also forms part of the linkage system. Also once worn causes sloppiness and worn dogbone mount can cause false feeling

Gearbox oil was replaced last month when serviced.
Appreciate the advice and info, however when stating that the local chap knows nothing, could you expand/explain this for me? I'm not defending him, just want a bit more info!

If you don't see rs clios on a regular basis or know their trates ,common issues become the issue because folk just don't know them well enough.

Not disrespeting the local garage or nothing. Its just specialists can usually pinpoint the problems very fast at minimal cost. Where as unknowingly garages just start stripping stuff to try and find things.

Who was the specialist you went to??

By telling you that the excessive play in the gearstick is being caused by the leak is demonstrating their lack of knowledge, they all do it. MartinR has already told you above.

I know which specialist it is. Just give him a ring as I very much doubt he has done anything shoddy and if its a faulty part he will rectify it for you foc.

Its got nothing to do with the specialist that has recently worked on it 100%not their fault.

I'm not quick to point the finger, I just want it sorted. And find the whole thing a little odd considering the part that has caused all of this is only a few quid and was replaced a month ago!
