AST Top mounts finally fitted :)

  Mk2 172
Finally had the first set of AST top mounts fitted to go with the rest of the coilover kit. Really pleased with the results. Car feels much better to drive. Steering feel and feedback is massively improved and no more horrible bloody creaking and cracking from those rubbish standard ones!!
Will post some pics up of them later on :)

how much for fitting?

No idea mate tbh. Im not paying for them or the fitting :):):)

Only take half to 45 mins to fit but will need realigning due to camber change etc and you also gain 15mm more travel from having them fitted to so you dont get near those nasty bump stops :).

  Mk2 172
DanR, did you find an increase in transmitted road noise / vibrations with these fitted? They look a lot better design than the loose fitting factory item.

Here's their website http://www.astsuspension.co.uk/content.asp?cat=000004#ptop , but no listing for a RSC?

Nope not at all. Sounds exactly the same :) no more noise at all. I was surprised my self! Miles better design than the standard rubbish.
No the top mounts are not listed on the website as they were only made last week :)

They look very Flash... Excuse my ignorance but whats the "Dial in tap" on the top of the mount for? And can they be fitted to cars with "Standard" spring and damper set up?

I didnt know what to call it LOL

I've never seen coil overs mounted before hence the confusion LOL

Could they be fitted with standard shocks and springs? (The mounts )

Dont think so mate. Youll have to ask. Im pretty sure you cant tho but dont hold me to it. Do the dampers first tho. It gets rid of the horrible creaking and cracking that the originals suffer from :)

you should be able to fit any of the solid front top mounts available with standard dampers altho i have never seen the front AST's in the metal so dont know what the thread is, guessing its the same as the std damper if the normal top mounts fit them

probably then yes :)

The strut brace is pointless tbh unless its welded on or bolted. I got it for free so i just bolted it on :)
No roof flex.

Cool, heard of strut braces & lowered cars causing the roof to kink etc in another thread a while back

Will these mounts cure this problem?

They will cure the creaking noise that you here while turning and manouvering at slow speeds etc. If you have a noise whilst driving then is is most likely not going to be the top mounts. Even when driving. The reason the top mount creaks etc is because it moves through lots of strange angles when you go from lock to lock.

When braking too, it is most likey to be something other than the top mounts, maybe a bush or bottom arm?? The reason the top mount creaks etc is because it moves through lots of strange angles when you go from lock to lock. Open the bonnet and get someone to turn from lock to lock and watch it!!

The noise that the top mounts will cure is the creaking and cracking you hear when your manouvering at slow speeds. A knocking noise while driving is unlikely to be the top mount. More like a bottom arm or something underneath( suspension arms, bushes etc)

I need to go out in a car with AST's fitted and see what they're like. Now I'm keeping the 182 I want to put some coilovers back on and it would be interesting to see how they compare to the H&R's.

  172 Race Car
I have H&R's on my 172 and ive driven Dan's and Adey's on AST's and they are night and day different.

Adey.

guess where my car is at the mo? lol

cant wait to feel the difference over my solid compbrake topmounts, also having the car checked over on the dyno, will let you know the results ;)

felt like the standard ride over the bumps, very little body roll, lovely turn in, steering feel much better.

the h&r's are good on track (if a little soft) but imo not as good as the ast on the road.

And again im not selling, fed up with the dozens of pm's every time i comment on this subject
